    Use a sponge with water to smooth out the caulk and then dust some cement over to blend in the colors.

      Thanks Ken. Tomorrow, I work on the cracks again. Have lived in the same house since 1980. Cement dust it is!

      Thank you Ken for that help, I think the whole point of repairing the cracks is to hide them, at least for me. . .

      Could I just sweep some fine sand about the same color onto it? My driveway was poured in 1964, so there really aren't grey tones.

    Great video! Simple, straight forward, and helpful. I also appreciate that you explained the use of self-leveling sealant. Liked and subscribed.

    What do you do if the cracks are uneven. After I filled the cracks with caulking specifically made for filling cracks in concrete, the crack sill had a "valley" between the sides of the the crack(I used foam rope beneath to fill in the deeper cracks). I let it dry and tried to re-fill the crack, yet it still appeared as if I needed to bring the sides to a more even height?

    Maybe do a 4 inch grinder to chase the crack first and that way you have a clean regular grove to work on.

    • @MYTOYMAKERZ
      @MYTOYMAKERZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also chase the cracks with a 4" grinder followed by using a garden hose with flow of water to clean off the debris and dust. I than wait until the crack is dry. By doing this you will have a longer better looking job

    do you have a DYI to show how to repaint the driveway after the driveway has been cleaned and cracks repaired. Our driveway was painted with a design about 20 yrs ago and we are ready to repaint it and want to make sure the paint stays. Other than pressure washing the driveway to clean it and fixing cracks, is there any other pre-prep to the new paint job? Thank you.

    Excellent video. I'm assuming that this will work on concrete pavements too. We've gotten so much snow in Philadelphia this winter that I've spent a lot of time out there attempting to shovel. Incidentally I am noticing a lot of cracks and was actually thinking of you guys, I remembered you doing the driveway stain removal video and was thinking, I wonder if Shelly and her hubby would have any crack advice. This video is much appreciated.

      Thanks, Anne, for that great comment. This does work on concrete pavements as well. Philly winters can be brutal, hope you're staying warm. But once the weather slips into springtime mode, you can seal the cracks. The repairs will keep the cracks from opening up again as well as 'spider-webbing. Glad to hear you liked the video. Let us know how your project turns out.

    Wonderful video, thank you! This is quite handy for me as I have lots of cracks just like the video AND they are both horizontal and vertical on a sloped driveway. My question to you is, what would you recommend to seal the division seams that you have that divide each slab of the concrete? Thanks so much!

    • @MYTOYMAKERZ
      @MYTOYMAKERZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can but you first need to install what's referred to as backer - it's round comes it different diameters and is made from foam. Reason is the self leveling filler will sink way down into the crack requiring much more product to be used. I see another video where someone is actually doing a repair using the backer filler. It take the place of the expansion trips that may have come out over time.

      Yes but not the self leveling filler. Use the standard product and you will have a long lasting repair.

    Great video. I called concrete guys and they are charging $100 per hour, which I can not afford. I have the cracks that are up 1inch wide. Which caulking (type of caulking) product would you recommend and does manufacturer matter. In your video, when you were introducing the names of caulks in the beginning there was disturbance can you please mentioned two types of caulking that you mentioned in your video. Thank you

      jay caulk is not recommended for gaps of an inch or more. It’s a lot harder to get a good seal and keep out water at that width, which is the whole purpose of caulk.

  • @topherming6565
    @topherming6565 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a very thin crack which is on a level surface, but not wide enough to be filled with self-leveling caulk. It is probably not wide enough for other caulk to fill either, but I want to use caulk and keep water from getting into the crack.
    Using caulk could make an attractive looking repair. But it occurred to me that I might be able to use a clear flexible caulk which would not be highly noticeable.

      Use a crack chasing wheel on a 4.5 inch grinder to widen it properly and then put the call in it. There are videos on how to do this.

    Alternatively brush a little ready mixed mortar into the crack and let mother nature do the rest. Or if it never rains fill a watering can and sprinkle a little water over the mortar. Should cost less than a dollar a crack.

    how much caulk should i apply for very deep holes. Like I want to get all my caulk in there. I don't want it to be just at the tip of the driveway, i wanna really drive it in and fill the hole. Any suggestions?

    • @dbreardon
      @dbreardon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably no more than 1/2" deep. if your crack is deeper, you need to put in backer rod first.

    I can’t believe I just watched a guy use caulk to repair a crack in concrete! Not only does it look terrible but caulk isn’t intended for this kind of thing. He’d have been much better with a dry sand/cement mix brushed in and set with water. Bizarre!

    • @dbreardon
      @dbreardon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not true. If the crack in the concrete is cause by movement... settling, hot/cold differences over seasons, etc...then the addition of sand/cement into those cracks will result in the new concrete/cement also cracking as the concrete moves (especially if the crack is small or thin). Basically, the use of these elastic polymer caulks in these type cracks is just the same as using the caulk as a sealant in expansion joints between two slabs....a common method used these days. Also, the caulk used in the project IS the kind of thing they use these days to fill cracks in concrete....it is a specialized elastic polymer designed to expand and contract with the concrete....be it a crack or an expansion joint.
      The elastic polymer caulk binds to the surfaces and is able to stretch and shrink along with the movement of the crack. It also prevents water from getting through the crack, causing erosion, and/or water freezing during winter causing more cracks. It does have it's limits.....about 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch or so wide....any more than that and then perhaps you would use sand/concrete with some type of binder added. But small cracks like in the video are treated just like expansion joints.
      If you did want to use sand/cement, it would be better is the crack was wider (more surface area to bind to) and a bit deeper. For the thin vertical sloping crack, you would need to use an angle grinder with diamond wheel to open up the crack some to give it a bit of surface area. But again, if the slabs move, your new concrete is also going to crack
