    I have had the freeride e-xc since 2015... love the non excisting maintenence.... and driving in Woods next to houses with out complains over noise 👍

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes the low maintenance is a big plus on the Freeride. Even clean up after riding in the mud is easy. Riding silently in the woods on a motorcycle is a unique experience

      Hi. The main reason for which I find this bike interesting is the supposed low manitenance: the frequent maintenance of my dirtbikes is the main reason why I use them seldom.
      How many hours have you got on that bike? Apart from the wheels, suspensions and the other components which should be serviced in a gasoline bike anyway, what have you serviced in this amount of hours? @mxengineer1 and whomever owns the same bike: I’d like to read your comments about it as well!

    I got to testride one recently and it's great, i love how you can ride anywhere without waking up mother nature and my neighbours, i would seriously buy one if it had a clutch and a right foot brake, but i can't bring myself to these controls

    • @mxengineer1

      KTM offers an optional right side rear brake pedal kit that bolts on easily. Adding a clutch is not so easy!

      Great review. Kool they got that adapter kit . Regarding clutch , I suppose you could just simulate with a mock clutch handle and adapt a preferred spring rate from local hardware and a little mig set-up. 👍🏼

      My Freeride has 1200 miles and 70 hours on it now and runs great. I have replaced the tires just recently, replaced (1) drive chain, and changed the reduction gear case oil one time (200cc's) which is recommended every 40 hours. The Freeride E-XC is a very low maintenance bike!

    Idc about the maintenance of the bike that’s part of the game. The main reason I love this bike is the noise. Being able to ride at times or places you normally can’t really is what makes the difference.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be surprised how little you miss changing air cleaners and transmission oil;) The stealth factor not only opens up places to ride but changes the whole riding experience...hearing the leaves rustling, wind blowing, etc...fun stuff!

    I Love the fact that its quiet :)

  • @TheBsavage
    @TheBsavage 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks. I'm not sure why all these new electric bikes are so expensive. In theory, from an engineering stand-point, they don't need to be. From a business marketing standpoint, of course they are: first release of new tech prices are always the highest.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think as you noted the cost of developing this technology and applying it to a dirt bike which is subjected to harsh environments (mud, sand, water, etc) and high inputs loads (jumping, rocks, whoops, etc) is one of the reasons the cost is higher. However MSRP for a 2020 Freeride in the US is $10,499 which is similar to the MSRP for a 2020 KTM 350XCW.

  • @M1ridleguy
    @M1ridleguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The idea of this bike sounds insane in theory but I feel like without a regular transmission it would just feel like riding a scooter. Half the fun on a bike is shifting gears and playing with the power. I would buy this bike but not for 10 grand.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I felt similar till I rode an Alta electric bike. Having instant torque available with no concern for gear selection or engine RPM plus the stealth factor makes for a unique off road riding experience on the Freeride E-XC. Hopefully you get a chance to try an electric Freeride. I still have my 300XCW and 350XCF but my Freeride gets ridden almost everyday.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Map 1 torque is limited (50% of full torque). I find it works OK on the trail but often won't get me up steep hills. Map 2 and even Map 3 are very controllable at slow speeds. I ride pretty much Map 3 all the time

    Hey Forrest, Sam from briar cliff that had the MXR. How’s it feel compared to the Alta?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alta targeted 250/350F motocross performance and did an amazing job for their first effort. The KTM Freeride is more like a cross between a trials bike and woods bike (not a motocross bike). The Freeride is very fun on the trails in the woods. The slightly more compact size and lighter weight give the Freeride a very agile and playful feel.

      Based on my riding so far real world ride time is 1~2 hours. A ride from last summer was 1:10 (1 hr 10 min) and covered 16.3 miles of hilly open trails in Maps 2/3 with hard riding and the yellow light was on indicating 10~20% battery remaining. I believe 1.5 hours of trail riding is possible if you use mostly maps 1/2. I am updating ride videos all the time so check back or subscribe to the channel for the latest on my Freeride. Great review. Quick question- Can a somewhat tall person (between 6ft-6'4) be comfortable riding this battery powered KTM or is it to small?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The footpegs are down and back (like a trials bike) and the bars are relatively tall to the Freeride which itself is about a 7/8 size dirt bike is able to accomodate taller riders. I am 6' 2" tall and feel comfortable on the Freeride with the stock handlebars and footpeg position. I believe the footpeg mounts can be reversed to move them back and down a little more and easy enough to install taller bars if needed.

The Freeride is fairly quiet in motion. Should I wait till the 2018 models with 50% more range start popping up?

    • @mxengineer1

      I've not ridden the 2015~16 Freeride electric models. The 2018 has more peak power (18kW vs 16kW) and 50% more range - may help you justify the higher cost for a used 2018 or later model.

      Thanks! Map 1 is 50% torque and top speed is limited to about 33 mph on level ground. Easy trails with easy hills could ridden in Map 1. However I've tried some steep longer hills in Map 1 and it simply did not have the power to climb. Based on my riding so far real world ride time is 1~2 hours. I think since it is an electric bike with no clutch nor shifter they put the brake on the left side handlebar location. The footpegs open and throttle/brakes are controlled by your hands at the handlebars which makes it very easy to ride. KTM does offer a rear brake pedal kit that bolts on so easy enough to make more like a conventional dirt bike

    I actually really wanted a dirt bike, but it seems way to expensive to maintain that hobby, do you think electric is cheaper to maintain? At least you can't blow these up lmao

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes electric dirt bikes like the Freeride E-XC can be less costly to maintain. Many high performance gas engine dirt bikes require frequent engine rebuilds (every 100 hours of run time) along with the usual engine oil changes and air cleaner maintenance. The Freeride does have a small amount of oil (200cc's) in the reduction gearbox that requires changing every 40 hours but that is all in terms of powertrain. The electric motor should last 1000+ hours. The battery carries a 2-year warranty and is suppose to keep 80% capacity after 300 charge cycles.

      KTM has a limited number of dealers in the U.S. that are authorized to sell and service Freeride E-XC's. Larson's Cycle in Cambridge, MN, Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, CA, and Solid Performance KTM in Downingtown, PA are authorized Freeride dealers and have sold and serviced the Freeride E-XC models. These dealers should be able to help you.

    It's cool, but I love my motors. Everyone's different but to me that motor is almost like a living thing. Maybe it's age but I know I'd stop riding before going electric. If nothing else the noise annoys me. Hope I never have to make that choice. At 46 I'm not so sure. The hate of gasoline is at maniac levels and honestly it's a misrepresentation - climate change.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me it is not about replacing my gas powered bikes. The electric powertrain just provides a different off road riding experience. The instant torque, no transmission, low maintenance are all unique to electric and the stealth factor can potentially open up more riding areas (even indoors).

    Only the price its crazy

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is expensive. However in the US the MSRP on a 2021 350XCF-W is $10,699 while the 2020 Freeride E-XC MSRP is $10,499 so the Freeride price is similar to other KTM products.

    Why is it so expensive if it’s electric

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I have noted before the cost of developing this technology and applying it to a dirt bike which is subjected to harsh environments (mud, sand, water, etc) and high inputs loads (jumping, rocks, whoops, etc) is one of the reasons the cost is higher. However MSRP for a 2020 Freeride in the US is $10,499 which is similar to the MSRP for a 2020 KTM 350XCW.
