      Seriously. I got a used one off Facebook Marketplace & put it on my wood chipper, I legit have to wear ear protection while using it. And I've done dumb stuff like use an angle grinder for an hour with no ear protection, but I never skip the ear muffs when running the wood chipper. This engine is VERY loud. I kind of want to pick up a second wood chipper, maybe find a broken one someone's giving away cheap, and put an electric motor on it. I have a 5 HP (actually 5 HP, not "peak HP") electric motor that I'm looking for a useful application for! (I saw a video of someone putting a 3 HP motor on his snow blower but think that's somewhat less useful given the fact that a snow blower is not stationary)

      They're loud AF and low frequency noise. My mum has a diesel backup generator which has one of these chinese single bangers on it and if it's on you can hear it at the back of the property which is about half a mile from it. Up close it knocks like a mofo.
      They run very high compression which helps them coldstart without glowplugs and burn the fuel better despite a relatively primitive injection system.
      The thing is noisy, smelly and smokey when cold and it only gets slightly better when hot. But it only sips fuel and doesn't bogdown and shutoff under sudden loads like a stick welder whereas similar petrol generators really hate striking an arc, can't maintain voltage and damage inverter welders. The chinesium diesel just knocks louder and sounds angry but refuses to give up.
      The thing sat out in the rain for 2 years and fresh fuel, new battery and it came straight back to life.
      But yeah I can't even hear an angle grinder next to it and my mums partner ended up building a kennel for it out of pallets, roofing sheets and tonnes of insulation to make it bareable lol. They bought a much more premium Hyundai unit which has a modern injection system, glowplugs and lower comp, it's whisper quiet but that means I get the old loud one :)

      The US govt needs to subsidize these things/make them cheaper. Like they did with gasoline engines, the fuel is expensive to make & they use a lot of it, diesels are tougher, & the fuel is easy to make.

      Warped Perception did exactly this! & the engine in the video runs at 3600 rpm, same as any gasoline small engine, so the gearing would be the same as a gas go kart.

    Bill, why not use the old air compressor up at the shed but just as a tank. Run an air line up from the new big compressor to the old one to fill it, and the old compressor would act as a buffer tank up at the shed. The new compressor would still be supplying the air, but the buffer tank up at the shed would mean you get pretty much full pressure at the shed.

    If you run a air line you will probably need one that is at least 2 inches ID, as you won't have enough volume with a small line, will drain the line faster than it can refill with air. You can probably find some glue together plastic pipe that would work, some of it is rated for 200 or 250 PSI.

      This is known as a 186f(e) (186f pull start/ fe for electric start) diesel engine -- best place I have found to buy them is ebay, but there are various websites that also sell them, and Amazon is also getting some now. It is a Chinese clone of the Yanmar L100 engine and also similar to the Kohler KD420 engine. It is rated for 9-10 HP @ 3600 rpm. You can get the Chinese ones for $600-700 shipped to the US, and the brand name ones are something like $3k.
      They are surprisingly easy to pull start once you know how to do it properly (I couldn't figure it out at first and installed an electric starter -- only to discover the proper starting method later): Pull the starter until it hits the compression stroke and you can't pull anymore. Push the compression release which should stick down. Now yank the pull start as hard as you can. Repeat and it should start in 1-3 pulls even if cold.

    Maybe your truck is like one of our mowers at work. It will NOT stay at the full mark. I can fill it up and mow for a couple hours then check it and it will be a half quart down. If I leave it at that level it will stay indefinitely. Never goes below that level but won't stay full either. I've decided if that's what it wants it's good enough for me.

    It's a diesel, it will always start when the fuel isn't gelled up. And for that, diesels usually have glow plugs. Although in the old diesels, you had a place just like that bolt, which went inside the compression chamber, and where you put something like a little paper roll (tightly wound, really dense) in, it was called "Zündfix", and it started to glow from the compression of the cylinder, even before the diesel fuel ignited. That's how they did it back in the olden days before there were glow plugs (like on old boats even until the 70s, but these engines were usually many decades old by then).

    Bill that little diesel would be a great engine for a log splitter

  • @blazing420loud9
    @blazing420loud9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a little FYI for everyone diesel are actually better at starting in cold weather over gas buy a lot now I will say modern gas cars and trucks do start up a lot better than old school and most probably would not even start but the wear factor is big gas is a pretty good Solvent and if your engine doesn’t turn over fast enough your just putting gas in a cylinder that hasn’t seen oil since the last time it ran and if there is even just a little bit of oil if the engine isn’t turning over quick enough to build oil pressure and start the fuel is just removing the oil and gas is one of them things were “a little bit goes a long way”. with diesel first the oil most diesels use 15w40 engine oil( heavy duty diesel engine oil) it’s pretty thick which means there will be a lot more oil in the cylinder it’s not all going to drip down to the pan second fuel diesel is pretty much oil gas is a oil to but it’s more of a solvent than diesel.
    I got a few more things to help some folks out there
    #1 most vehicles have to separate engine oils two use one is thicker for summer weather and one is thinner for winter weather even though it is thinner oil and if the engine sets long enough there probably won’t be much oil left in the cylinder but the oil pump want have to work as had to supply oil were it is needed.
    #2 “Either is Bad for diesels” that’s kinda a misconception, if the engine has a intake manifold heater or glow plugs yes it’s bad for the engine but if you disconnect them and don’t spray it while turning the engine over at the same time it’s pretty safe and will definitely help but one good role of thumb and this is #3 and it’s for diesel and that patients take your time and don’t rush it or give up on it and if your running short on time or know that the batteries are getting to low for comfort that’s when you use the either.
    ( btw the guy who invented vegetable oil invented it so that the wast cooking oil can be used for fuel in Diesel engine and/or vehicles)

    • @bmw328igearhead
      @bmw328igearhead ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes things easier sure... but the big thing is getting the piston speed fast enough to generate heat from compression. That cylinder decompression lever makes everything a whole world easier by letting the user spin the engine fast enough to allow compression to heat cylinder, once the decomp lever is flipped off.
      To pull over a diesel manually is pert-near impossible. The kinda man that can, you politely call "sir"

  • @nathanbrodeur
    @nathanbrodeur 5 ปีที่แล้ว
