    This piece has knocked me out ever since I first heard it over 30 years ago. As I recall, it's dedicated to Dave's erstwhile composing-arranging teacher (and mine, and many others'), the late Rayburn Wright (1922-1990). Ray headed the Jazz and Film Scoring Program at the Eastman School of Music for many years. He and Herb Pomeroy at Berklee probably taught more notable jazz composer-arrangers than anyone else in jazz history.

      Bill, thank you for your very kind praise and posting this on TH-cam. Yes, this was originally written in remembrance of Ray Wright. Revised slightly for my CD, I did not put the back story on the liner notes out of space concerns and I thought there was a universality to the music. But this was inspired and dedicated to Ray, whose gentlemanly manner belied a total mastery of the craft of arranging and composition. As if that wasn't enough, he was a master teacher. His daily living example, intellectual curiosity, and love for each of his students will live forever in the lives of many composers and arrangers as well as many teachers at major schools around the world. What a legacy! We were all so lucky to study with and have Ray Wright in our lives. Always, Remembering.

    I absolutely love the sound of this band and this recording. Getting a great recording with a big band is tough. It helps to have a great studio and the right mics, but hats off to Rich Breen for fantastic engineering work!

    What tracks is the bass bone playing what I assume to be a bass trumpet?

    • @daveslonaker7575
      @daveslonaker7575  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nate, there is no bass trumpet on this chart. It's all 4 trumpets/flugels and 4 trombones (4th is bass). Thanks for listening!

    mike barrone arrangements are more exciting than this.........like a dull, side 2 puff piece. Give me a Woody Herman arr anytime!!
