  • On this day in Tudor history, 12th December 1546, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, was led through the streets of London from Ely Place, where he had been held since his arrest on 2nd December, to the Tower of London.
It was meant to be a humiliating walk for the earl, but it seems that the citizens of London were actually sympathetic to his plight, and didn't boo him.
Find out what happened on this day, and also what happened to his father, who had also been arrested, in today's talk from Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History".
You can find out more about the earl's arrest in Claire's video from 2nd December - • December 2 - Henry How... - and his execution in her talk from 19th January - • January 19 - Execution...

Teasel looks so comfortable and so content in her new home. She obviously loves you so much already and is able to sleep so peacefully knowing that she is truly safe and protected. I doubt the Duke of Norfolk was ever able to sleep so peacefully or so deeply without some fear of what might lay ahead. Love and blessings to you all.

Several months ago I read a book on Henry Howard. What a fascinating man. It's called "Henry VIII's Last Victim: The Life and Times of Henry Howard, Earl Of Surrey" by Jesse Childs. I learned so much about him and wonder why he is not more well known. Thank you, Claire, for bringing attention to this individual.

Only the good die young - Norfolk survived everything. He pleaded for his own life but failed to try and save his son. Poor Surrey. Norfolk pushed his nieces at the King and then stepped back from them when they were in deep trouble... and Norfolk got to live.

Question: These men were my 2nd and 3rd cousins so I'm curious, why do they call him "Norfolk" and others by their shorten title instead of their name, as in Henry or Mr. or Sir Howard? Thank you so much for your continuing videos that are interesting as well as entertaining. Hugs!

Talk about luck with Henry dying before he was due to be executed. The only downside to this talk was the Earl’s son being killed. Teasel seemed so comfortable in your lap. You adopted a great girl and so active normally. The cats must be no w here around.LOL!

Teasel is tired she’s been hitting the books until wee hours of the morning ....She needs her rest . The poor Duke loosing his son and not knowing what was going to happen to himself,. I guess he lucked out with the kings death . That’s a stressful life.🕍

I do feel sorry for the Earl of Surrey. He was proud and had a big ego, but I don't think he deserved to die.

What a lucky man, well, for that time period anyway! If only his son had managed to be able to put things off for a few more days he may have made it too! So sad an ending. Maybe the death of his son in that way was a heartbreaking punishment for his dear old dad!

Surrey’s enemies were just looking for any excuse to have him executed. It’s sad that the king ignored his letters and entreaties
And the same goes for Norfolk though he was lucky enough to be released upon Mary’s succession. Though I can’t imagine prison would be a nice place to be in Tudor times.
Thank you again for all of your hard work and I’ll be tuning in tomorrow
