  • The Purdy Mine which was once lost is now re-found near Algonquin Park. It is an old mica mine that's situated on a forested hillside. At the Purdy Mine you can find mica, feldspar, quartz, beryl, uranite, zircon and other rocks and minerals that are frequently found in Ontario pegmatites.

4 years quickly passes. I live right beside the Magnetawan River in the town of that name. My banks are in Sundridge and Burks Falls. That bar is gone now that your standing beside. I think there was a start up mine for Mica (Graphine) closer to Kearney that failed about that time. Keeping water protected seems to be the reason. I think there is going to be a new emphasis on minerals in Canada now that Russia is being put behind a new Iron Curtain. It is nice to see someone pay attention to our region. It is economically depressed.

I had never been to Mattawa and was awed by the country. It's right on a fault line so often hit by tremors.

Do you know of any valuable minerals near North Bay that you can acquire personally and make a profit?

I remember as a boy , we spent the summers at our cottage on Eels Lake.while catching Bullfrogs along the shore , the rail tracks all twisted coming out of the tunnel type mine . It was boarded up slightly but could be ventured if desired . Not sure what they mined there I assumed Mica because it was everywhere .. Eels lake was a man made lake purhaps you've got info on that particular lake, always enjoy your vids .

A very interesting video, Caver461. I learned a lot, and that's good, because it's our property in Calvin Township. I wish that you wouldn't invite people to trespass on our property, and remove the material from our Mica mine, however.
Come by sometime and we'll go together, and you can answer a few more questions for me. But please don't encourage people to trespass on private property.

The first time I saw this video and read the title "Finding the Lost Purdy Mine" I couldn't help myself from laughing. I don't quite know when the mine was lost. I was born a quarter-mile down the road and even as a child, we were able to "FIND" the mine at least 2 or 3 times a year. I thank him for uploading his video so people can learn about local history. However, he's talking like a European explorer that discovered North America. It's like when Pat Sajak told us on "Wheel of Fortune" that Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered San Diego bay. Straight to Google I went and learnt that people have been living in this area for over 12000 years. Guess people not from white European ancestry aren't people ?

It was in old toasters. They make small windows with it for houses. It's called muscovy glass. It is an excellent electrical insulator with a melting point of 1300 degrees Celsius. Have a look at the shiny flakes in makeup. That is mica. I saw a sheet of mica in the Royal Ontario Museum from this mine. I'm not sure if it's still there. It looks like it is almost 10 feet long.

Mattawa , Ontario. Mattawa Is an Algonquin word and it means "meeting of the waters. That is the junction where the Mattawa River empties into the Ottawa River. I always wondered what the significance and meaning of it when it referred to Mattawa , Washington.
