Convert SLR Camera to Digital with "Electric Film"

- Your awesome old SLR camera can be converted to "Electric Film" by installing a cut down mirrorless camera to a spare back. Your SLR can still be used as a film camera. I will show you how to achieve perfect focus by installing the 1.5 crop 14.2mp CMOS sensor at the film plane. Take photos in normal colour or infra red with an easy swap over of the filter glass. See this project from start to completion at

Next video shows Nex assembly on the SLR in more detail ----- • How to fit a Digital B...
Thanks for watching.
Update Modification - I have rubbed back the glass covering the sensor to less than 23.95mm so that it now sits between the film rails on my other Nikons. This digital back now works on my Nikon FA and Nikon FE2 however it is not possible to fit the IR Filter inside these cameras. But leaving the filter off and adjusting the Sony to manual white balance at 2900k G8 provides a deep rich colour photo that can be converted to multispectral infrared black and white. I would say that the Nikon FM has the same rear door, so this digital back would also work on them. As an IR Filter can be fitted at the end of a lens there is now no reason why this digital conversion cannot be done for any 35mm film camera like Canon, Minolta, Leica etc. RG.
It is amazing how we are still attached with old cameras. I´ve seen tons of these experiments and so far this one seems to be the best. I wish in the new future science will get a reliable way to atach a standard device to old body cameras, although every camera has different space in between the lenses, but let`s hope something will pop up so I can use my Leica R3. Eventually old body cameras prices shall rise again!!
I think we are attached to the old cameras because they look, feel and sound great. Each brand of camera may have different focal lengths between the film plane and lens but this is irrelevant to fitting a digital sensor in them. My method will work on your camera because the sensor is rebatted into the film area so that the focal point inside the sensor is now the same as where film would sit. I am toying with the idea to fit another modified Nex onto our M3 Leica because I know it will work perfectly and the rear door of the Leica M3 would be so easy to make a suitable copy being just a flat plate.
What my successful experiment now needs is for people clever with 3D design/print and electronics to make backs for the various SLR cameras that this type of Nex components can be mounted in and so look and operate better than my rough as guts setup. However my bet is that the big camera companies already have all these ideas patented to stop it being commercially viable. They want to sell big plastic cameras that devalue like no tomorrow, rather than upgrade the real old jewel cameras from the 70 to 90's.
Thanks for your comment. Robin.
True!! Please let us know whe you have that M3 ready to shoot! It would be wonderfull to bring back the old school into shape (at least to an extent) Thank you for your kind words, and we await anxiously surprises from you!! Cheers!!
any news about this?
Thank you Very much, Robin. I shall try that!
This is the coolest thing I've seen on TH-cam all week!
Thanks. I really appreciated this. So many views and no appreciation - I was losing heart! Cheers. Robin.
Robin Guymer I love stuff like this! this actually got me to think of a similar project based on a Pentax system (A digital K1000 would be right in my "wheelhouse") Awesome tha this was a practical and doable thing, not just theory!
Oh dear Lucifer.. I love this;

Actually this exactly how the first digital SLRs worked.
The results in the beginning dont matter.. it's truly the thought that counts here. exploring and creating different things that are abnormal is fantastic to me.. thank you for sharing this with us.
Very inventive. SLR digital cameras are expensive but old 35mm versions show up for cheap on a regular basis. I must see 10 every week at car boot sales.
I'm watching this in 2021 and am very surprised that some enterprising young mind (or an established camera company) hasn't taken your brilliant idea and commercialized it! You should patent this idea.
Lots of companies have tried to commercialise digital conversions for old film cameras. Some even worked but all have their downsides, and the companies go bust. There might have been a market for it 20 years ago, but that boat has sailed now because everybody who wants a digital camera has now got one. This is an interesting and clever project, but mainly a curiousity.
God I love Aussies. Just make me feel right at home while im on a holiday trip just by watching this video. Good on ya!
Cheers! Have a great holiday mate.
You are on to something my friend! Hope you further your project! A fine contribution to photographers! Keep it up!
I have appreciated your response Brandon. It is rewarding to see so many enjoyed the project and maybe got some inspiration from it. All the best.
Very clever mate. An interesting project. Sometimes you have to build stuff just for the hell of it!
Thanks a lot Chris. Some people just don't get it but you clearly do. All the best.
To those wondering as to why this matters/ is important/ why would you want to shoot old slrs when digital bodies already exist:
Between the 70-90's there was an insane camera revolution that lead to cameras such as the Contax T2 and Nikon F3 shooting on the same format, even though they are are incredibly different cameras. In medium format you saw cameras like the Hasselblad shooting on the same format Rolleiflex cameras. When everyone is shooting film, you all have essentially the same sensor, and so camera manufactures were competing to create cameras that had the best experience for photographers. This had a lot of trail and error and every manufacturer had a different approach and releases before finding the current DSLR. That lead to companies like Pentax experimenting with 6X7 medium format prism SLRs, like an up scaled 35mm camera and Mamiya making the RZ67 based largely off a mix between large format cameras and the Hasselblad. This meant that if your needs are besides the mass consumer's (which have all been accommodated with the DSLR and mirrorless systems) then you can probably find a better system for you during this camera revolution, all you need to do is give up digital conveniences and shoot those systems. Well, some cant give up digital. This is a great insight into the progress that could be made for digitizing some of these older more outspoken cameras. The F3 is widely considered to be the best 35mm SLR camera ever made, with that Im sure you can understand some people would still like to use that body. Also, it means you can escape the more generic cameras of today where you essentially have 3 choices: Mirrorless, DSRL or Fuji (who make both those generic cameras packaged in an attempt to remember off the past).
I love the experiment, and it's great if somebody does something for fun.
But for all the haters: YES this is basically the same as just taking a Digital camera and adapting a vintage lens. In this case, the SLR body is the adapter. And smaller, easier adapters are available for 10$ on ebay.
What?? Just buy a nikon dlsr, you can use your lenses on it.
Ahhh yes, you're on the right track. This is sort of what I had in mind... the only challenges that stop me from trying involve syncing the shutter or at least ensuring that the shutter release button also triggers the electronics.
Hi, I know this is a older project, but have you thought of any improvements? I am trying to create a digital back cover for my rangefinder cameras and have a bunch of ideas but no one really does this type of thing
La gente que da dislike???? El hombre se lo ha currado mazo, obviamente el acabado perfecto no es, pero flipas que idea ha tenido
In the last hour I had a similar idea to this and am glad I found this here, shows me it’s possible. Just need someone to develop it with me now. I have an idea of how it should work, but no clue about the programming required or the electronics 😆
Love it! Genial...I have a FE and prefer the simplicity old style SLRs but prefer digital. Most DSLRs are over packed with features most people never use. Nikon missed out on a market here and their retro DSLR was never the answer.
This is outrageously excellent!! While I am not a photographer in any sense, I have an old (should I be embarrassed about this one??) Fujica ST 801 that I positively adored - and took some great photos with. Every once in a while, I check on the internet to see if there's such a thing as converting this to digital. Sadly, I'm probably not electronically adept to do your project, but watching your video was a great find to years of searching. Thank you.
Really appreciate your nice comment. I wouldn't say I am electronically adept either, I just used common sense to rearrange the Sony Nex parts to make this work. Your Fujica is an awesome camera, I've heard others rave about them. Why don't you get back into B&W film and do your own developing in Caffenol (coffee + washing soda + vitamin C). The results are really satisfying and you get to use your superb old camera again. www.caffenol-cookbook.com Regards Robin.
You basically made a crop DSLR but with an inaccurate flange distance and an unnavigable user interface... but there is certainly potential in the idea. Like you say further down if it was fine tuned and machined properly it could be in fact very successful. You could integrate electronics into the areas for the film spools somehow... Cool idea
Just put a digital viewfinder in a film camera. *Tah daaahhh!*
@@Jay-jb2vr How about mounting a lens mount adapter to the crop-sensor camera before destroying it?
My Nikon F has a B setting and a T setting. B closes the shutter the instant you let go of the button, while T keeps the shutter open until you turn or change the shutter speed nob setting. I also sometimes see it "get stuck" when I got a 1/8 sec shutter speed set but it seems to behave normally after a few test shots every year or so.
This really is incredible, I am completely blown away. Amazing work!
Good on ya Andrew, thanks a lot. RG.

Reminds me of my CFV-39 with my old Hasselblad gear. Same workflow, slightly easier with HBL, but more or less the same. Great video!
I don’t see how this is better than putting a lens adapter on a modern DSLR. But I appreciate the enthusiasm.
Nicely done ! Done that like 12 years ago , should have patented my idea.
Hi Robin, that was a great idea. What about using a little action camera for this purpose?
Robin Guymer, I salute you sir!
You must be camera master or engineer, really awesome job!
None of those professions Tommy, just your average house builder. Cheers.
Robin Guymer You have done a great job, thanks for sharing the video.
OMG Gizz that was the best thing I have seen on TH-cam I will bring all my old cameras to you lol. You Legend
Awesome, we have nearly 600 old cameras in our collectible store, I can't wait to show people your video.
Wow! What an interesting store you must have. Check out xovercameras.blogspot.com.au where I show that you can adapt a Sony Nex to ANY 35mm camera in just infrared format. This gives you 2 stops more light and lots of fun experimenting with various colour filters. Black & White outcomes are superb especially with a red filter. All the best. Robin.
...Just thinking ... Would not be Great If the photograph industry release a professional consumer line of digital adapters that could work with vintage cameras in the same line of the device shown in this video ????
There were several digital-adapter backs for popular Canon & Nikon cameras over the years; I remember seeing them at both Photo Expo (in NYC) and Photokina (in Germany.) All these companies were purchased (mergers/acquisitions) by large camera companies and the product lines allowed to die off.
There was one called Silicon Film I think. They abandoned it when funding dried up after 9/11.
Hasselblad does it but only for their own cams
I have a FM2. Good job. Thanks for the video
Cool project to be proud about.
Hey Mike, Thanks a lot mate. Really appreciate your nice feedback. All the best.
Robin.
Would it be possible to separate the screen and the back unit via a USB or Bluetooth and make it really a compact "digital film" attachment? Attached the monitor unit and synchronized the ASA/ISO to the camera and remove them then shuttered away 36++ exposure.
I was wondering... How about using a digital mirrorless with the jack for the release cable, and connect it through the PC socket of an old SLR (or, with an adaptation, use the output from the flash hot shoe)? I do really thing it would need a sort of converter to convert the signal from the PC standard to that of a mirrorless, but that shouldn't be impossible to do... In this way you could set the shutter on the digital camera to, let's say, 1/8, and sync with the slr, which if is a quite good one may allow for times up to 1/125 (I was thinking about this escamotage to digitalize my Olympus Pen F, which has a rotary shutter and allows for flash sync from 1 second to 1/500, that is to say the entire shutter speed range
That is brilliant! I wonder why camera manufacturers never came up with this. Were they afraid their camera sales would decline? Maybe someone can set up a business for this, there must thousands of SLR owners who would want to convert their cameras (?)
You are a hero. I hope you enjoy all your cameras. I have a gevabox camera and i was looking for some way i can use it. This gives me some idea though.
i cant believe what i just saw. that is remarkable! i might try this some time especially since i have two minolta x700.
Thanks Ethan, yes it works a treat. Am posting another video that goes into more detail on how to accomplish this. Hope to see some posts on your Minolta when you fit the Nex. Robin.
This would be awesome with a 16mm camera as well! Great job 👍🏿
robin i have seen your fantastic idear, but how do you fake the camera by having no lens. pleas contact me i want to rebuild my canon ae-1 to yours. regards robbert
Thanks Robbert. In the menu of the Sony Nex cameras is a setting to "Release w/o Lens" which means it will fire it's shutter without a lens attached. This setting is for when lens adapters for other camera lenses are used and so it works well for this hybrid camera. I would choose the Sony Nex C3 as a suitable digital back because the front face can be cut off quite flat as there is nothing behind that hand grip on the C3. Other models are difficult if there is a bulge at the front. Good luck with it and have fun. Robin
@@RobinGuymer-Gizz hi Robin thanks great that in the menu I can change it. In you're other example you take a Nex 5. Is that smaller to mount I'm very handy. Is that what you mean. Robbert.Pas@hetnet.nl you can mail me.
@@RobinGuymer-Gizz
I'm looking for parts the price keeping low as possible. 4 kids is expensive.
Neat. My only possible criticisms are (a) it's bulky, (b) you need a second back for the camera you're digitalising (that you're not afraid to sacrifice), and (c) you are limited to APS-C (unless you have the money and the nerve to sacrifice a full-frame digital body). But I guess if you're the sort of person who sells on a lot of film cameras of a specific type, and you have no trouble taking the backs off in replaceable fashion, it would be a quick and easy way to check the function of meter, shutter curtain timing and lens apertures without needing sophisticated equipment.
All good points but it's also great for infrared photography with 2 stops extra light to play with and this gives a whole new dimension to your photography. They could also be excellent cameras for photography schools who still teach their students the basics with film cameras.
Robin Guymer I would beg to differ with the last. Sure, it does help to see early on what effect differences in aperture and shutter speed have, but that can be done by the instructor with a tethered digital. If your photography school is using film cameras, the basics they will be covering are _take, develop and print_ and you don't need or want a digital back for that.
this is just awesome ! keep up the good work robin
Hi. Looking for this convert device since long. Is it available? I have yashika 2000, and want to convert it into digital. Where can i get the same? Can you help please?
Congrats for your effort, greetings all the way from Croatia ;)
Cheers John. Nice bike you've got there.
Wow this is so cool! Always happy to watch your vids !
Hope that you figure the CROP factor due to that it is NOT a FULL FRAME model, and dude raise the volume if you are going to do another video, colors are off, and what happens if it breaks down?
You brought digital to a fine film camera ! Can I send you my MINOLTA SRT-101 ?!
Nice work mate ...
NJ , USA
Cheers. Yes the Nikon FE's are so reliable. Your Minolta could well be suitable. There is only two requirements for a Nex digital back on an SLR. 1/ Is the back film door removable? (so you can fit a spare one or custom make one to mount the sensor and Nex) 2/ Can you, with a bit of ingenuity, fit the IR Filter combo behind the mirror against the shutter frame inside the SLR without causing mirror or shutter lockup? Most high quality SLR's are suitable and also Rangefinders. Of the cameras we have the Canon A1 looks easy, Nikon FE2 bit tricky as it has an undercover to the mirror, Leicaflex SL looks doable, Leica M3 piece of cake with the flat back door easy to custom make and plenty of room internally for the filters with no mirror. Could be time for a new lease on life for your lovely old Minolta. All the Best. R.G.
I wish one of the camera manufacturers - especially Olympus, Kodak, Fuji or Nikon would make actual "Digital Film" - a cartridge you can insert in the film chamber of almost ANY 35mm film SLR that would behave just like film - but you can change the ISO and control exposure via Bluetooth or NFC to your smartphone. After taking pictures it would simply download to your smartphone or tablet and then do whatever with it. I think Nikon owns a patent on this, to prevent others from making a dent in DSLR sales.. This could be an actual "full frame" sensor to match the same 35mm frame. You could use all the same lenses on classic hardware. Leica makes a camera that behaves like a film camera - no preview LCD - so you have to check pictures after you download. Until and unless that happens we will have to kludge it like this - very interesting nonetheless.
Hi,Robin. Very inventive and ,yes,I say, highly innovative. I have owned Nikon SLR and now using DSLR but my love for my SLR still remains intact. I had been wondering, until this moment,if there is going to be ever possible to use my SLR digitally. You point to a possibility and successfully too. Obviously I cannot possibly do it at home. So I am wondering if you will float an outfit or design a conversion base that can easily fit to SLR models. Just an idea. Give it a thought. Thanks,Robin Guymer. I want you to know how much appreciate your innovativeness.
will you be doing more vids about film cameras?
I'll try and work up the courage :-)
I find that regular digital cameras are terrible in low light because of the small aperture lenses. I would like to convert my old SLR to digital so I can use my bag of lenses.
Any ideas on how to make a Nikkor lens for an F series fit on a Digital Nikon?
Yes John it's fairly simple to do with a dremel grinder and a file. It is just a matter of grinding back a slim section of the rear mount so that it will pickup the metering protrusion and rotate it to the corresponding fully open F stop. Nikon used to sell the conversion mounts but no longer available. I have done this with a Nikkor S Auto 50/1.4 which now fits all my Nikons and is a great lens and it still has the rabbit ears to use on my F2. Google Nikkor non AI conversions to AI. Good luck with it.
Did you have the recording camera (for the video) set at infinity focus? The reason I'm asking is that as you approach it, the image becomes somewhat blurry, but when you move it away towards the wall unit, everything becomes clear. Thx! Very cool idea. Going to try with my Maxxum 7000.
Do I still have to purchase those old slr batteries to make my camera work?
Depends on the camera.
This is really cool! I wonder if you can use a cable release to sync the back
Thanks Ziyang. My first attempt with a Nex 5 I was trying to wire a switch onto the camera back. This can be done if your good with electronics which I am not. Otherwise you could wire in a microswitch within the SLR that fires the Nex at the same time (see Frankencamera). I have put a small swivel lever mounted onto the Nikon motor drive which makes it very easy to trigger the Nex with my left thumb (either on say 2 to 5 sec or on Bulb). What is really cool with this camera is Infrared photography. This is a whole new dimension and SLR's are designed to use Infrared film with focus adjustments for IR on the old lenses. So they are perfect for digital Infrared. See my blog on this subject at xovercameras.blogspot.com.au which I will post later tonight. 2/12/2016. Thanks heaps for the great support. Hope your going to build one as it would be great to share ideas as I intend to do another one with my Canon A1. My email is on the blog site. Cheers.
Hi Robin, thanks for your reply! I will try it in the future! Merry Christmas!
that might be a one in a million... good job
Brilliant. I wonder if this would work with a press camera.
Thanks Paul. I think the sensors available at present would be too small for a medium format press camera. But I don't have any experience with them to provide any advise.
:)
$99 metabones adapter or this? tough choice!
Are you making and selling theses ? Price ? Too
Only those years of the slr, and sony?.
You are amazing :-D great project! thanks for sharing!!
Didn’t Nikon patterned digital backs for slr’s?
GREAT GREAT GREAT IDEA, MANY CONGRATS AND COMPLIMENTS.... BRAVO. 😁😊😁
Thanks a lot Riccardo.
have you got focus on infinity? i tried on my nikon and it couldnt reach
Mad project but loads of fun.
How do you synchronize the shutters in both cameras?
They don't need to be synchronised. The Nex just needs to be electrified with enough time for the SLR camera to expose the shot at it's light meter setting. I set the Nex around 3 seconds but you can hold it on in Bulb or set it out to 30 seconds. But the longer it is on the more noise you get on the picture. Watch my other video and it will make sense. The shutter in the Nex is made redundant but it is needs to operate because the Sony software requires it to make the Nex work. Get rid of the Nex shutter and you could make a very neat digital back. RG.
This is absolutely great. Appreciate it very much. Thinking of moving my FM2 to a whole new level now ;-)
Do you see any chance to get the trigger info over to the Sony AND keep it somewhat in sync? Maybe by means of the contacts on the bottom of the FE/FM?!?
Thanks Peter. Yes it is possible to sync the Sony to the Nikon but by persons more skillfull at electronics than me. The two sites below show how you can solder an external switch to the Sony and Ollie Baker was able to wire in a micro switch to his Konica to put them in sync. If you were doing a long exposure you would need to keep the Nikon button pressed down till the Nikon's light meter closed the exposure. There are a couple of places in the bottom section of the Nikon where you might be able to wire in a small micro switch that is triggered by the components down there that go click during an exposure. I did look to see if I could get any electrical feedback from inside the motor drive but like I said I really am useless with electronic stuff being a builder by trade. Hope these sites are of assistance. Regards Robin.
Ollie Baker ( I got the idea of just banging the whole Nex on the back of an SLR from Ollie's work.)

F-NEX adapter wouldn't work better?
If you could get a full frame sensor in any film camera, it would be great.
You are a genius!
Thanks for the video. Good job Sir! Obviously photograph industry is not interested on create an adapter that brings back old analog cameras. Planned Obsolescence! Mean while, they will keep creating more and more tech garbage. That's happening these days (2018) in the digital and technological era. Can you believe that?
How can I convert my PENTAX film camera to digital, please.????
Thanks for making this video, I've been wondering how to do exactly this project, I wasn't sure if it was positive now I know tks
Cheers John, yes it is a positive outcome. Hope you proceed with it as it would be great to have someone to compare notes with. I rarely use the IR/AA filter insert now as the photography off the bare sensor and converted to B&W Noir in Mac Photos makes for some great shots. It is actually quite difficult as the focus needs some guessing and the manual speed & aperture settings critical given there is so much extra light available. RG.
Robin Guymer thanks for your reply, I have a lovely 1980s Minolta with loads of great lenses.
I have to find a digital camera to sacrifice. I will need advice please , I'll update you as soon as possible.
This is very cool. Well done!
Cheers, glad you like it.
How I can get this digital back adapter with instructions?
Nice one :) Can you sync an external flash with such arrangement ? Nex cameras does not allow external 3rd party flash on their own.
lvgk g Since he has the Sony set at 5 Seconds, I would think as long as the flash syncs with the Nikon it would work, Since the Nikon is in fact controlling the actual exposure.
The Nex is only the electric film. The flash is controlled and syncd by the Nikon. I use my old Metz 45CT that would melt the electronics in a DSLR. See my post "Using a Film Camera Converted to Digital" at xovercameras.blogspot.com.au
Does long exposure work??
Impressive! So great! Keep it up!
Sir good evening,
Sir I have one Nikon SLR film camera . Model FM10. Can you send digital converter kit? If it is passable please give that price and method of money transfer details. Thankyou Sir
Can u make a video how to make one of these
Okay I will. Probably split it up into a few sections. RG.
This new video shows some more detail on how to fit the Sony Nex to your SLR. th-cam.com/video/xG19U8dvNh4/w-d-xo.html Hope it is of assistance.
Creo que es más fácil usar un adaptador de objetos Nikon - Sony.
Yo uso una Olympus M4/3 con objetivos OM y estoy muy satisfecho con el manejo y los resultados.
Un saludo.
chears mate great work , I have OM's I want to do the same. I will use nikon digital for my backs.
The man's a genius!
if you like a dslr or mrlc just buy it,don't break the beauty of film camera!!!
I don't think B is a fault, I think it would be bulb, so the shutter stays open.
I picked up a box full 15 in total of old 35mm cameras for $10 at the local Life line a couple of years ago,Leica's,Praktica's,Pentax, Nikon ,Agfa,Petri and a couple of other German cameras. Looks like im going to get into some camera butchering action.
pretty cool, at this point it does seem like a glorified lense mount though
It's mad, it's genius!
Good job! This crazy idea came up in my mind this afternoon! Now, I am confident to make that happen. But first, I need to make some money for buying "Sensors"
Btw, would it looks funny when you frame through the viewfinder as a full frame and ends up it only gives you cropped image?
Thanks Mat. If you look on my web blog you will see that I have masked out the cropped area on the viewfinder glass which is removable in the Nikon FE. That way I only photograph what I can see. This works well. See xovercameras.blogspot.com.au
Amazing video!
Why just shoot with the Sony nex?
Anybody know if there is a digital conversion for a Nikon F4?
Great :) Always look for new ways !! Great :)))
Very clever - thanks!
You're awesome, mate. Cheers!

sounds like (FuCKIN DO IT !! ) 😂
this is so fucking cool !!!!! Good fucking work guy
really impressive! i like your style
Thanks Darragh, it has been a fun project.
Wo finde İch diese convert
this is awesome..your hands shake a lot
Thanks. Yep too much stress in the building industry does that to you!
great idea BUT want to show u what happened here , first i do photo and videos so i love cameras and diy ! i even tried to put my gopro inside a film camera lol , and i was watching ur video beside another youtube video (shark tanks show its about investments in new ideas ! ) so here jumped to my head an idea ! so the idea is simple . thats to make a new sport cameras in china ! , its not really new but it has a new design and shape , ( i can do the design as a 3d model if u into that ), so thats design allow any one to just insert the camera inside the film camera in one click ! (fits inside any filmcamera! ) and it allows to use the filmcam buttons in same time ! the best thing about this camera is the idea and the price , it comes around 40 $ ( becuz i have some connections in china and they do sport cams for around 15 to 20 $ and maybe u know some called fly cam and Yi cams ) , so these my thoughts , images an ad says do u miss using ur film camera , now u can :) , what u think ! thanks for video and keep on :)
Hi Marc, I think your idea has some merit but the key is to get the biggest sensor as possible to fit in the 35mm film box. The Nex sensor is a 1.5 crop and it is really tight vertically so you won't fit any bigger. But a redesigned sensor for film cameras could be a lot wider which would provide a more rectangular panoramic type image but at least a larger percentage of the camera's view finder would be used. The trouble with using a small sensor (like in a go pro) is that you are only photographing a small rectangle in the middle of the cameras viewfinder. The owners of these old cameras want full use of the camera and to photograph what is in the viewfinder as the manual focus via the split prism is the great feature of these old cameras.
There is too much componentry in the Nex that is not needed in these modifications. Like the shutter is bulky and not required. The battery is too big. The screen could be smaller as you only need a quick view and to be able to adjust software settings. Flexibility on all the various cable lengths would enable a better layout in a custom made back. Happy to discuss your ideas and work in with your contacts. My email is xovercameras@gmail.com
What I believe should happen is that Sony should realise the potential for this and manufacture a component kit for 35mm film cameras that has a custom sized sensor of over 20mp that drops into the film box right at the film plane. The rest of the components to be as minimal as possible and as flexible as possible. Then film camera owners of any manufacture, could get their own custom made 3D printed camera backs and just fit these kits into them.
Keep on with the good ideas - it's what this project needs.

Thank you for the great information , you really know a lot which is great to make it as a business ! , so heres an important thing about it , its mainly about the design of the camera ! its really different and some people will see it strange shape but it makes all sense ! , and its about the lens ! , i know its small sensor but the lens is not wide ! , for that its going to focus right in the middle of the lens ! , (as many lenss products came for gopro ! ) , so i think i miss a lot of the technical information about that but i would like to send to u the design and with your knowledge i think u can adjust it and who knows maybe we will come with something wow :) , if u have fb please add me , march art , thanks a lot :)
