I love the idea of the engineers in Zeiss Ikon being like: "So we heard of this craze of making ultrafast lenses so we built a 0.33 lens with parts we had around because we could."
As a Chinese I can somewhat understand the special meaning of Dongfeng and Hongqi 20. Both of these cameras were produced under the intent of Jiang Qing, who was the first lady on China. And is also loved photography; and thus wanted to create something that both shows the peak of Chinese eingineering and industries. But I guess realistically, the idea of reverse engineering doesn't mean anything. If it was mass produced, it would just be like any other leica copies from russia on ebay. Both of these are on display at Shanghai's Old Camera Museum. Been there once but back then didn't know what they were lol. Have to go back and see
I have the replica of the Leica 0 made by Leica in the year 2000 & compared to every other camera I’ve owned/tried it’s still my favourite. Feels like using a time machine 💥
@@KyleMcDougallActually it's not really a replica since it is Leica who made both. It's a reproduction, I believe. I have one too. A very beautiful camera of typical Leica quality.
@@KyleMcDougall CLE has aperture priority auto exposure. Im not sure what metering system it uses (likely centerweighted) as opposed to the Leica CL's 1 degree spot meter. There are probably some other minor differences such as mechanical shutter Vs. electronic shutter, but auto exposure is the big one.
I bought a Leica 50mm Summicron DR. It’s old glass. It’s imperfect. Totally love the amazing rendering on my M3. I have a 35mm v4 KOB that has taken most of my shooting attention these last year I’ve had it.
You might look into the Georz 75mm Hypergon lens with fan for 8 x 10 cameras. - that's about 140 degree coverage. Mine is like 1910 vintage. A most interesting channel, thanks.
I think Kiev also made an iteration (copy) of the Pentacon 6, which was the progenitor of the Pentax 67. They also made a Hasselblad clone, a cheap way to get into 6x6 SLR.
Pigeons at that time (most likely passenger pigeons, which I believe are now extinct) were trained to fly to a specific area or distance, then return to wherever they started
Hmmmmm. Instant return Meeeer? Cape Carnival? A very interesting video with loads of cameras I had not seen before. Also an interesting accent. LOL. You could have added one more lens and included the 6mm f2.8 Nikon ultra fisheye lens that was also used by Stanley Kubrick in 2001. It was used as the eye in the centre of the HAL 9000 computer.
I’m pretty sure that all variations of the Leitz Minolta CL / Leica CL (35mm film camera) were manufactured by Minolta in Japan. The later Minolta CLE was different beast that Minolta produced on its own offering aperture priority automatic mode using through-the-lens, off of the film metering.
Slight correction: the moon landing was in 1969, not 79. Probably just a mistake, but some young viewers might have registered the wrong decade there! Great video Kyle! Thank you, that was instructive and fun!
Disappointed that my Praktica SLR from Consumers Distributing didn’t make the list. I have a 500CM it didn’t go to the moon but I do have Hasselblad 10 Years On The Moon 1969-1973 promo pamphlet printed in Sweden (of course) 1978. I image that it isn’t especially valuable either. 😂
Киев actually not a manufacturer of the camera, it’s just name. It was made in Kyiv (Київ) by Arsenal Factory (it’s a large, military mostly, factory) uk.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Арсенал_(завод)

Hi Kyle, Guess what, I happen to have a camera that is so rare, nobody even knows it exsists ! I bought it on a camera fair together wit 2 lenses and the magazine, I later realized there was someting odd about this item because I own several camera's of this type... It took a while before it apeared to me what was different. A few years ago I contacted a German photography magazine called "Photo Klassik", they were so kind to put a little artikel in it acompanied with a few foto's I took from it. There were a few reactions from readers who replied and said the camera was not rare at all but they got it wrong, they were refering to another type, so not mine.... I send the camera in for a CLA to the only Dutch Rolleiflex repair man and he confirmed that this was a ORIGINAL RARE BLACK ROLLEIFLEX SL66 even he has never seen ! From the Rolleiflex SL66 there are, I believe 26.000 build but only 10 pieces are completly build in BLACK, invluding the magazine ! The German autor Claus Prochnow who was working at the Rollei plant whrote several books about Rollei, in one of these there is proof of the existance of my Blackie, in the book Rollei Report-2 on page 26-547 in the top box, upper right hand corner there it is listed as; " Schwarze Kamera 10 Stuck 1973 Nicht gelisted Sonderausfürung" which means, Black camera 10 pieces, not listed, special edition 1973 ! There is a Rolleiflex website and the guy who runs it is Dutch but he lives in Australia, I contacted him but even he with his elaborate website has never heard of it... Now I hope to get YOU a real scoop. BTW, it is for sale 😊
for decades i was curious to see photos taken with that 0.95 Canon lens ... saw some online a few years ago AT LAST! the image quality of that lens in one word: RUBBISH! in all caps ...

Truer words have never been spoken
Real
Leica secretly buys notable historic cameras from their lineage. It helps increase the value of the brand in the public's eyes.
That’s most brands and museums lol

Still a really nice camera!
Think about all those Hasselblad cameras left on the moon constantly going up in value.
Love this vid! 14+ million? That's insane.
And I think an M11 is expensive and out of range. I guess I can't even afford to look at the auction catalog for Oscar's Ur Leica!
A palette cleanser from the usual gear review / how-to videos on other channels. Enjoyed it very much. Thanks, Kyle!
Cheers!

Was good to bump into you this morning Kyle. Loving the content. Keep it up!
Cheers, Colin! Was good to meet!
Hi Kyle, thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thanks for all the time you spent researching and creating it.
Cheers, Andrew. Glad you enjoyed.
Thanks for the fun diversion. I really enjoyed learning about something new.
I hope you consider unique videos like this in the future.
Glad you enjoyed, Greg. I had fun making this. I have a few ideas for more in the future.
Loved learning about all these cameras! Big fan of this style of video, keep it up!👍
Very interesting. Thank you for taking the time to assemble such interesting and historical photographic information.
You’re welcome. Cheers.
What a fantastic video !
It was so interesting to see all these rare cameras !
Thank you for the research !!
Enjoyed it a lot !

Love all the research you put into this. Fantastic video Kyle!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the green background with yellow titles. Excellent font choice too!
Glad you like it!
Pigeon-cam FTW! That’s the best. Thx Kyle. A great video!
Cape Carnival? I didn't know we had a launch facility there. I wonder if it's near Cape Canaveral?
Must just be a coincidence. They should really diversify their naming.
although between 1963 and 1973, it was actually called Cape Kennedy,
(I couldn't believe he called it Carnival) 🙃
Have you ever been to Rio for the Canaveral? It's awesome!
The Minolta CLE is actually a different camera. The Minolta version of the Leica CL was just called Leitz Minolta CL.
The CLE is a wonderful camera, I regret selling mine badly!! You should check it out!
I wasn't aware. I'm curious what the difference is.

@@RohkopfMS I second this. if not the CLE, get a CL. That 40mm just butters my muffin.

Amazing compilation, thanks a lot!

Love the topic, unexpected and delightful
Glad you enjoyed!

You've got a great eye and I like your approach to shooting. Much better than the average walk around for sure 😃. Subbed!
Appreciate that. Cheers.
♥️ 5:00 Proud that this camera is named after the Capital of Brave People 🇺🇦✌️
Your second pronunciation of Quatsch was pretty much spot on!
David Chan showed me the Dong Feng and told the history about it, ending with a classic "not for sale".

That pigeon one has me shook! WOW! That is incredible. My only question is how would they recover the camera from the pigeon afterwards?
pigeon lands :)
You wait for them to come home.

Yep, this. Also didn't know much about this until researching this video. Really interesting stuff.
@@goatman9933 There are still pigeon races; you train them to fly from point A to B still exist.

Yeah, it‘s an entirely different (much better) camera than the Leica CL.

I didn't think Leica's could be that expensive....as chinese copies. Damn!
So, there's 12, $660,000 cameras scattered across the surface of the moon? Is this a Starfield mission?
There are a few Pentax lenses that are worthy of this list... Very low production runs on a few Konica fast prime lenses also.
