actually, at their size, they lose heat incredibly fast as well as generate it, these creatures have a number of methods of disposing waste heat, but its more impressive the methods they use to RETAIN heat. since most if not all of the sugars they drink are used to fuel the flight muscles, hummingbirds actually go into a kind of semi hibernation when night falls and its time to sleep. its during this period of nightly hibernation, or during a longer migration, that the animal will tap into their very limited body fat reserves.

My grandpa (According to my grandma) had always had a fascination with birds. Ever since he was little he worked hard to tame birds on all his free time. One day I went to his house and saw multiple birds waiting on the table. As he said “For decades I have fed these birds and their moms.” “That’s how they trust me so much.” I admire him more because when he walked outside. A pidgin with one leg came out and landed n the table he was sitting at. He got up and went to his garage. He came back with a pack of bird food. The pidgins name was Joey and he died 3 weeks ago. The good news is Joey had a wife and kids so there’s a high chance the kids will grow up with him too :)

Per gram of weight, hummingbirds consume the most energy per minute among the animals. They have a fast metabolism that requires them to ingest nearly twice their weight in nectar every day. It takes a lot of energy to move as fast as they do; their heartbeat is 1,200 times per minute during the flight.

We have this annual honeysuckle bush that started attracting hummingbirds back in 2014. What was so cool is that they kept coming back to the bush several times a day. Before that point, I was under the impression that they stopped to eat and kept going wherever they were headed never to return. Fortunately I was wrong!
Then, just last summer of 2022, we got two feeders to hang outside our kitchen window.
I realized that the trick isn’t feeding them without scaring them away. It’s restocking their food without them following you in the house! 😅

They're really smart to understand that their mobility helps them escape from real threats. I remember seeing one hover between my mother and I as she was restocking the feeder for them. It's like the hummingbird wanted to find out who was refilling it. And clearly, it didn't have the slightest fear of being attacked as it literally forced its way between two giant creatures.

Hummingbirds aren't difficult to 'tame' really...since they can notice and seek out humans, especially those who refill their feeders. They're very intelligent. I have tons here in SoCal & this one started looking for me through my sliding glass door! So I went to fill up the feeder she likes and she came right from her little branch. They will literally sit on the feeder while you're there (or fly in your face) if you're with them enough :) Just spend time with nature--you'll see!

Usually to make your own nectar to attract hummingbirds you use cane-sugar/beet-sugar mixed with water (spring water preferred but tap is ok to)
I got most of the info from this article: www.hummingbirdsociety.org/feeding-hummingbirds/

They are competitors in nature, both feeding on flower nectar. They fit the same niche of pollinators. Both have developed long mouths to reach in to flowers, and both can hover over the delicate flowers shaking in the wind. It is inevitable that for reasons of functionality, bees and hummingbirds have similarities.

I was teaching a junior youth class at a Baha'i Summer School many years ago up near Pikes Peak in Colorado. There were a lot of humming birds there. We had an afternoon break and I stopped near a collection of large boulders, about three feet high. A hummingbird came by. I started playing hide and seek by dropping behind a boulder and slowly coming back up. The bird began doing the same and we played together for about five minutes. Pure Joy.

I don't know why, but hummingbirds make me feel very happy when I see one chillin, feeding on my ladies flowering plants in our backyard. They're different. Was washing one of my mountain bikes after a ride with the homies and had a bucket of water on the floor and this hummingbird stopped, looked at me, then the bucket like asking "can I have some water?". It was hot AF that day lol.

Paloma San Basilio yes they do have to trust you by seeing you very often. The more they see you, the closer you can get to them. They are very skittish at first. If you even move while watching them eat they will fly off.
