  • My first time crossing the English Channel on DFDS from Newhaven to Dieppe. With the sea calm and the sun shining, I think this is going to be a great way to start a series of adventures on the trains of Europe with my 1st Class Interrail pass... but the trains are for another day. For now, let's cruise across "Lan Manche".
    Departure: Newhaven, England, UK
    Destination: Dieppe, France
    Distance: 121 km / 75 miles
    Duration: 4 hrs
    Average speed: 30 km/h 19 mph
Foot passenger, one way ticket: £31.00 / €36,00
    Date of Travel: December 2023
    Operator: DFDS Seaways
Motive power: MS Côte D'Albâtre. Built: HJ Barreras, Spain. Maiden voyage: 2006
Thank you to everyone that supports the channel by subscribing, liking, commenting or just watching these videos. I really appreciate it!

@@andrewventhem3130 Yes, i think people do miss that. It is a little inconvenient in Dieppe if you are a foot passenger. I suppose most people add the word "car" to "ferry" these days.
The staff have always been great on every ferry i have been on, but the Harwich/Hoek ferry was the only one that felt it was supporting foot passengers properly.
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your memories 👍

@@JohnnyHooverTravelsEven though I use to live in Clacton near Harwich, I never did the Harwich ferry, don’t think I even caught the train, I did do the Gare de Nord Paris to Dieppe harbour train in the late 80’s when was a single journey and you went pass Gare de Dieppe to the harbour!

Under Armour can be a life saver! As Canadians, when we hear Dieppe we think of the Pre-D-Day landings in 1942 and the terrible losses suffered in Operation Jubilee. It would be the bloodiest day for Canadian soldiers in the entire war. Just a bit of history.

Yes, I wear it under my uniform on very cold American football games too!
I did walk along the sea front after i'd checked in to pay my respects at all the memorials along the beach to the Canadians (and many more). Poignant memories.

That’s lovely that you did that. It might feel a bit odd, I think, arriving at locations that were the sites of major battles, seeing them as they are now but knowing what they were.

Thanks for sharing, I took a car so had no idea what the accommodations were like for foot passengers, our car wasn't searched and we had a quick passport check in a booth (sort of like a toll booth) at ether side before being free to go. We used this route a couple of times when there were problems on the Dover-Calais route during the Summer peak-period. The Transmanche ferries take an eternity to offload at the destination when fully loaded. Depending upon where they tell you to park, it can take up to 45 minutes to get off. The ferries themselves are OK but much smaller and tend to feel cramped (at peak times which is when we travelled on them). The food is OK but nothing special. On a sunny and warmer day, it’s best to ‘get up top’ and relax on the open decks rather than endure the busy inside space. In their favour, these ships are much better than the vessels I used on the route back in the 1970s. They were dreadful. It’s a real shame they don’t provide a shuttle bus to the town centre and rail station.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, a shuttle through the town to the station would be handy for onward travellers.
I get your point about the size of the ferry and I agree that on a lovely day with lots of passengers it is going to be a lot nicer outside than inside.
Thank you so much for watching 👍

Arrive at 09.30 into the the main basin ( now the marina) and have a day out in Dieppe. A lunch of moules et frittes with a glass of local cider and a relaxing afternoon. Then catch the 6pm sailing and be back for 9.30. A wonderful day out. Sadly the timetable doesn't allow that now.

I have used this route twice this year ... in both directions .... but unfortunately they have been the overnight crossings. It is less expensive travelling from Scotland during the day and so I miss out on seeing much crossing La Manche. Your little video was a chance to see what I had missed. Both my crossings were during the high season and cabins were at a premium resulting in a tiring, uncomfortable voyage. A nice breakfast, however, set me up for onward travel. The route is only marketed by DFDS The operator is TransManche and it explains why the o board product is so different. I understood that the ferries were not originally built for the Newhaven route but became available at a bargain price... they were exercise so slightly too long, necessitating the removal of the outer arm of the marina. I would not be surprised if the route closes when the ships reach the end of their lives. The ships swing in the harbour in poor weather conditions... Great clear vlog. Good to see.

Often done on Dover/Calais route but the size of the ferries helps.

This crossing used to be so much frendlier to the foot passengers until at least the mid 90's, from when both the new port in Dieppe opened (a 30 minute walk from the old Terminal) and Newhaven Marine station closed (the original passanger terminal).

    • @alexmcwhirter6611

Yes that's what I was thinking. I did this trip with my parents when very young and it was one of the British Railways (before Sealink days) ferries and we docked in the old town port area. That port was still being used in the early 1980s when I made the journey with a Jetfoil from Brighton Marina ... the company was Seajet and the service didn't survive for long.

In the 1970s I used the Newhaven-Dieppe crossing several times as part of the connecting British Rail/Sealink Ferry/SNCF boat train service between London Victoria and Paris Gare d-Austerlitz, via Newhaven Harbour and Dieppe Maritime. I seem to recall there were two boat train services a day in both directions, one daytime, one at night.
The Dieppe ferry port in those days was alongside the Dieppe Maritime rail station on the other side of the inlet where you were walking. You came down the ship's gangplank and climbed straight aboard the train. The Ro-Ro ferry vehicles drove straight onto the Dieppe quayside, causing some town centre congestion.

Yes, us foot passengers now have to get used to the "busy road walk" whenever we sail! Steve Marsh was saying just the same in a recent video.

We used the TOE car for UK football matches.By missing tthe Friday boat back.Till the customs pulled the car appart for "drugs from Brighton". The terminal has moved over the water and the maritime station gone. We considered using this route on our trip to France earlier this year, however we couldn't justify the extra travel time compared with the Dover--Calais route, despite the lower price. Cross-channel ferries really have markedly increased in price since the pandemic, which is a great shame.

Yes, you definitely are because a couple took a dog on my sailing. However, they have to be left in one of the ship's dog crates which are on one of the car decks.

On certain routes, either the dockside doesn't enable walking on or there just isn't the "foot" traffic to warrant it.
That particular route seems not that busy...

Others have mentioned the time when the ship docked at the inner harbour and connected with the maritime station. At least (apart from the walk on the road at the start) the stroll along the quayside into the town was mostly pleasant!
