    "You see something you did not expect". People in flames at the office? That's an understatement. Love your explanations of these situations. My rule "Act. Do not React. " You do need to do something but do not let the situation influence you in what you do.

    I used to work at a large Aquarium and have had to deal with several emergency situations. One of the biggest things in them is to help everyone have a role. Even if it is as simple as "Stand here and wave to the ambulance when you see it" or " We are directing people away from this area right now, start doing something over there". That's why regular practice drills and training help. You can give someone a default behavior instead of "panic".
    Now, that being said, I'm pretty sure that "Talk down the flaming man" isn't a scenario that most people have rehearsed much.

    I would've opened the door, seen what happened, immediately closed the door before Luke could turn & see anything, acted like nothing happened, and ran like the wind!

    It probably didn't help that Marie was *already* worked up as she stormed into the office ready for conflict not a de-escalation.
    I tend to cope with stress via humor so I probably would've stopped dead in my tracks like "OH! Sorry, I didn't realize you two were having a moment. Should I just see myself out or -- oh yeah, no you're right -- we're in this together now, aren't we..?"

      It's not a guarantee; many people have wildly different sensibilities and responses to humor. However absurdity can be an unexpected ally and deescalation tool.

    I believe it's situations like this that helped develop lying as a defense mechanism.

    • @TealWolf26
      @TealWolf26 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Everything we do exists in some degree in the natural world. Animals have been lying to each other for 100s of millions of years. Pretending to be dead, pretending to be food, pretending to be a threat, not a threat. Camouflage. Manipulating a situation and other actors to your benefit has always been an important survival tool.

    I would love to see this video continue with the other characters that encountered him next. Jordan and their response to go into fight and Andre talking him down would be great additions to the same topic because all of what you said was flying through my head when I thought about those character interactions.

    That guy was total evil. If you had got to the end, you would know. I think Golden boy should have gone public about the evil of the school instead of act on emotion. People would listen to him if he had think clearly. I know this is part of the story that drive series....

    I've been a volunteer firefighter for a while and had a... varied career before that so I'd react quicker than most.
    That being said my first instinct on seeing a fire is to raise the alarm and grab an extinguisher. Upon seeing that the guy on fire turned it off without a mark on him the first words out of my mouth would be "You might want to put on some pants"
    Btw fun fact: the smell of burning flesh is so distinctive that it cannot be mistaken for anything else. The closest thing that comes to it is burning pork.

    Was walking today, Georgia...one of my usual routes. Suddenly a dog lunged at a fence and started barking loudly in a yard that previously had no big dog. I registered "large dog in yard" in my brain at the same moment it made its presence violently known. No visible reaction from me, because the situation required no effort from me. I don't generally get startled. I'm also extremely difficult to throw a surprise party for. I'm aware of the presence of people before they jump out and yell "Surprise!" So I'm not. Surprised, that is. = )

      @@GeorgiaDow = ) Georgia, you're Type A...very organised, things thought out...well planned. I tend to expect things to NOT go as planned. So I expect surprises. Which makes them...not surprising. And not stressful. Improvisation...being able to fly by the seat of my pants...actually can be thought of as a from of preparation = )

    I would de-escalate and probably not bullshit him. Say something like "Look I haven't made my mind up. If you be cool I will hear you out. Put some pants on, come with me and talk." More than anything he is terrified so alleviating that fear is a good start.

    Oddly enough i have no panic reaction to situations of extreme natures for the most part, had… a lot of near death situations where i had time to fully realize it from childhood to adulthood, and due to it my brain basically just analyses whatever happens as its coming in with a neutral/calm mode. So, coming in with her ability set, it would probably be something where i check my hair/eyebrows from the intense heat, then, looking at it afterward, be like “huh, well… bit messier than i had planned…” and from there offer to help, if he still went hostile then i would have likely gone full bloodbender as i ran, using his blood in his body to slow him down or if possible pin him. Should that fail, likely as i ran id make sure to say that the A-hole admin had stabbed GB with something and that was what was causing the issue to anyone questioning/helping, thus helping to protect us both no matter the outcome.
    P.S. unless it was a long day/week where i am just tired of absolutely everything, then id probably make sure im not on fire, look at it, go “well, thats my task completed”, and turn and walk calmly away

    Me walking into the Dean’s office and watching him get instantly bbqed: “That just happened.” GB starts ranting about the Forrest etc. me: “Ok. I’ll hear you out on everything later. He was going to expel me for saving that person’s life the other night. First let’s deal with the body. Might need a better explanation than he had a lit candle in his mouth, but we’ll figure that out later as well. Do you have an extra set of clothes, or do I need to get you some? Kind of awkward having this conversation while you’re nude”

    Pausing the video at 6:17 to answer.
    I've never seen this show before this clip. Going by only what i see. If I was the woman I would understand what I can fake and what I cannot. To react is human but an obvious lie changes you from a human to an obstacle.
    I would have accepted my panic response, enthusiastically ask to catch my breath. Explain that I startle easy but please just give me a moment to breathe and I'll be okay. During that explanation I'm focused on bringing my heart rate down and I'm focused on fire guys body language. I'd probably make a show of catching my breath but also asking if fire dude is okay. Are you hurt? Can I help? I would be addressing them with genuine concern and empathy.
    You're not tricking anybody is my point I think. Own up to how you emote, acknowledge if you're scared or nervous in an extreme situation. But breathe, calm down, look at who you are addressing with soft eyes and a receptive heart. You need honesty. You don't have the ability to come up with convincing lies in extreme situations. You do have the ability to be honest enough to be believable without being completely honest.
    However if you try to act like everything is normal and now you're their best friend and it's just a normal Saturday but you're sucking wind and stammering... You're giving away instantly obvious lies which make you out to be untrustworthy.
    Be truthful and real without perhaps being completely honest as to how you ultimately feel about everything is how you get through this in real life i think.
    I think being genuine and empathetic in these situations can work but you cannot tell immediately verifiable lies and that includes your physical as well as emotional reactions to trauma.
    I could be totally wrong about all this tho, just thought this would be fun to write out and it was. Gonna finish the video now lol.

    • @YaotzinMI
      @YaotzinMI 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Now that I've finished the video, yeah I would have died on the hill of talking him down because I ain't running anywhere lol. "Ha ha wow dude that's ****ed", give me a sec please my heart is racing. Were you just on fire? Are you okay? Did you get put out? What happened?
      If he responds "this guy got burned up in the tub, you understand?" My response would be "I hear you man, I don't give two shits about crispy down there but I don't want the pigs knowing my name within a hundred miles of this place so how do we get out of here? "
