This researcher created an algorithm that removes the water from underwater images

  • Why do all the pictures you take underwater look blandly blue-green? The answer has to do with how light travels through water. Derya Akkaynak, an oceangoing engineer from the University of Haifa, has figured out a way to recover the colorful brilliance of the deep.

      Judging from the footage in the video, this is basically an algorithmic version of a physical red filter used on lenses. This isn't truly adding detail or removing hazy distortion over distance, it's just producing truer colors from the underwater footage than traditional unfiltered methods. As you can see around 2:20, this method actually loses quite a bit of detail in the shadows, so I'm not sure why you would opt for this over a simple and reliable red filter, which has been used for underwater photography for quite some time.

    • @GeckoOBac
      @GeckoOBac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@ACBYT The difference is that you have the real color scale to do a color accurate correction for each photo, you don't have to guess, it's done automatically based on the color palette that's left on site prior to taking the photos.

      Underwater photographers and videographers have been manually editing their photos/videos for years and it's fairly easy even with "live" video. Just need the correct red lens and lighting (see th-cam.com/video/J6kQJ4RowXA/w-d-xo.html) However, creating an AI to automatically adjust without the need for filters/lighting would be a game changer.

      Benjamin Charlton - simple?.... yea, pretty sure it’s no where near “simple” to create what she did.
      Calling it “fantastically simple”... would be if all she did was use a color chart and color grade... she built a freakin mathematical formula to accurately remove HAZE and WATER DISTORTION... with MATH... from a distorted monotone **UNDERWATER** PHOTO.... and then with the use of freakin MAGIC... she REMOVES THE FREAKIN WATER..... ..... FROM THE FREAKIN PHOTO... BENJAMIN!
      WITH MATH!
      A FREAKIN MATHEMATICAL ALGORITHM!! That REMOVES WATER!! FROM THE FREAKIN OCEAN!!

    • @HiThisIsMine
      @HiThisIsMine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      wick - not overreacting... just over-exaggerating the fact that it’s not “fantastically simple”.
      The world is full of smart people, yes, but to discredit the time, effort and skill that went into making this possible by calling it “simple”... that’s why I called out Benjamin for his comment.... exaggeratingly (if that’s even a word)... which I assumed would be obvious.
      Getting further into my denunciation of calling this “simple”. Anyone with some know how could probably reverse engineer what she did to create this system... but nobody HAS created it on their own and reverse engineering something doesn’t take away from its complexity. I would assume Benjamin had good intent when writing his comment, but the process of creating a system that can achieve what is achieved here, is by no means a simple one.

    I can see how it works when you have a calibration color chart - it gives you a way to see how the different colors are scattered at different angles, and then correct for that. But how this will work "in the wild" when you don't have the calibration chart remains to be seen. I guess you have to hope that the effect is the same in all situations, regardless of water temperature, depth, salinity, sunlight, etc and just do a "standard correction". Anyway, it looks very cool and kudos to her for coming up with it.

    @Seafox0011 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The science behind this technique is photogrammetric depth mapping with the added component of calibrated colour correction. The tricky bit is reverse calculation of Rayleigh scattering and probably can only be a summation due to the variability of localised salinity in the water.

      @@actiaintYes but not really, the color chart at 1:35 is there to see how the predefined colors get distorted by the scene.
      When you're underwater you don't always get the same color deformations due to the large amount of variables at play.
      I'm sure the Nautilus or other deep sea cameras already use a decent color correction algorithm but what makes the difference between that and her's is that ...
      They do not have a reference for what the colors would be in the scene in order to back track it.
      They can at most take liberties with the colors and make a semi believable for the public.

    To all those who do not understand the whole "it's calculated" part:
    She stated on Reddit and Twitter that the color chart is only for checking her calculation works. It is 100% an automated process based on water properties.
    If anyone is curious, she has put the specifics for her method here:

    • @tolga1cool
      @tolga1cool 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only difference seems to be correction for scatter caused by distance to the photographed object. Although I have no clue how the algorithm would know the distance of each region of the picture

    • @GrandHighGamer
      @GrandHighGamer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The color loss would be somewhat dependant on distance, so her version seems to use multiple images to create a depth pass so that the right amount of tint is removed and the right amount of contrast is added.

    • @craigsj
      @craigsj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is exactly the same as that technique except that it uses AI to choose the slider values. The AI has been trained using data sets collected that contain color charts, but color charts and multiple images are not used to perform color correction on the image itself, it's literally just an educated guess input into "Lightroom".
