1:17 you say "and nobody's going to undercut you"... this is the key point. If something rarely goes below 10, then posting at 11 is stupid. However, I will definitely hang out in the 5x+1 territory (i.e. 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31) if I'm in an undercut battle with someone, and I value "keeping the price high". For example, T8 flawless at 12 gems. I'll undercut that to 10. It's pretty rare someone will undercut me to 9 and if they do, go nuts, it'll get bought up quick and I'll still be first in line at 10. I would never undercut that to 11, then let someone "lock in" 10 under me, because I am not willing to drop to 9. However... If we're talking about a T4 flawless that someone bought all the flawless out and reposted them to 12 gems. You are lucky to sell these for 2 gems. So on that one, there's no point me going to 10 gems, because I'm just dumping the price faster. And if I go to 10, they'll snap cut me to 9 without a second thought. Even down at 7 gems, I'm going to go to 6 there, not 5, because if I post at 5 they will just snap undercut me to 4 instantly. In this case I value keeping the price artificially inflated and we both keep the price higher this way. If I undercut them too much, we will crash the price faster until some fish comes around to snap up the worm. One last important part comes next.... Another really important point is 3-4 gems. If you are selling something that you are VERY happy selling for 1 gem (sell for 2 gems then get 1 after auction cut), such as for example the T4 flawless above that you bought for 50000 gold... then if someone is at 4 gems, I'm not going to undercut them to 3, so that they can undercut me to 2 and lock it out (you can't post for less than 2). Instead if they are at 4, I'll just go straight to 2 and put up a 48 hour auction at 2 gems and lock in my place as first in line.
Yeah a lot of people listing their purple T5 epics for six gems missed out last week when I was in the market for blossom fodder. I was willing to pay 5, but not 6. Coulda made the sales and still got 4 gems if they'd watched this!
