I'm genuinely wondering if there's something wrong with certain Xbox consoles. I captured the first four acts of the game (80% of the game) on normal difficulty and ran through the analysis tool. It was completely stable throughout. I have genuine proof, so it's clearly possible to run completely smoothly, but I know some other users have run into performance problems at certain points. I was never able to reproduce it and I've now played through most of the game twice on Xbox One. It's a very curious thing.
My xbone has been running pretty badly since the windows update, I get randomly signed out or sent to the dashboard and have to sign in 3 times sometimes, due to random error messages. Lastly I cant enter the store for the life of me (also due to error messages) I remember Snoop Dog being in the news bitching about Xbox live about the same time my problems started, so I know its not just me.
Even if this game is cracked and served to me for free, I'd choose to buy it merely for the amount of love and care the devs showed for the pc community.
UWP removes any reasonable possibility of modding, though. And the particles update at 30fps, remember Bioshock 30fps physics? That kind of thing belongs in the previous decade.
I'm in total disbelief. Gears of War 4 is giving me 120+ FPS at 2K Ultra with my GTX 1080 while playing 5 person Horde mode. 120+ FPS in a game that looks this good is impossible. How did they get a Windows Store game running so insanely smooth and why didn't they do this with the other games.

Digital Foundry is rarely impressed on the its technical analysis but they have now at least three videos on this game alone. HellFire in the same way we could look at how well Recore looks and runs even though for some reason Unity was chosen for the engine. Compare it to virtually every other Unity based game out there and it blows them out of the water. Even graphically simplistic titles like Firewatch run like crap on it, but Recore (by Concept and Armature) knocks it out of the park. Unless you're told it's Unity you'd never know.
I wish you guys would do a video for noobs just explaining what all these technical terms mean. For example volumetric light scattering. I have an approx idea obviously but I would love a proper break down of all the terms. Great video though!
it takes some time, but keep playing pc games and you will be an expert soon enough. i gotta admit tho, that i always wait for digital foundry technical review, cuz i really can't do it by myself, there are some options that i cant simply tell if its on low or ultra. but for all of that is DF, i love these guys.

Even with MIcrosoft STORE issues/headaches its great that this and FH3 have been available on PC, do look forward to the cross play on this fully working with XB1 consoles which is just another bonus for Xbox compared to Sony PS4. Sony may have their PRO console coming but right now fans of Xbox/Microsoft just got two major franchises appearing on PC where they can already be enjoyed beyond what the Scorpio will offer in the next year. This is one thing Sony cant compete with.
There's a huge difference. Look at the textures, foliage, object count, ground clutter, shadows, ambient occlusion (although that's more subtle and easier to miss), and anti aliasing (again, probably harder to spot with lots of motion in the scene.) The easiest difference to see is the textures.
TH-cam's lossy compression inherently normalizes image quality... I can't believe after all this time people are still going to youtube for "graphics comparisons" and wondering why they don't see a big difference.
And now we have it running on the series consoles what are you waiting for if you don't already own it, it now looks and runs how it was originally intended.
Destiny did have that budget, (GTA 5 also had such a budget) but you have to remember those games are lot larger in scale, and you do have to spend just as much time texturing the entire world, as Gears does its linear campaign and maps. (im not hating on Gears its my favorite shooter, im just saying) Meaning you get a lot worse graphics because the "budget on texturing wasnt as condensed" if that makes any sense.
I'm always impressed with developers when they work within the constraints of a console and still come up with something that looks mindblowing with almost no tradeoff. Reminds me also of Halo 4. I still don't know how 343 got it to look THAT good on the 360.
Console performance doesn't seem that bad, to be honest - it just suffers from the worst frame pacing this side of Bloodborne so it looks way choppier than it should be.
Xbox One's Highlight of 2016. Holy shit we thought Quantum Break would be in that position. Oh how the mighty fall. QB is still fantastic though and (forgive me god) it has the best graphics on any platform this year. Still, gears of war 4 is damn good.
You're going to love this game. My friend and I finished it almost in one sitting over online co-op on hardcore. I'd like to go back and do it on Insane. Beautiful game that shows and doesn't tell.
Would have liked to see a demonstration showing the antialiasing, but otherwise another great analysis video. It's hard to tell which is PC and Xbox. Devs did a fantastic job on the tech.
This game is amazing. I played a lot of Horde mode and the fact that there's cross play for this mode and campaign is what makes me love my Xbox/PC more than my rarely played PS4.
Its something any on-line vid simply can't get across. There is a difference that is immediately noticeable when you turn it off, sort of in the same way as when you turn off the surround audio channels in your home theater. With a good setup you shouldn't really be aware of the surround speaker's presence, but turn them off and its IMMEDIATELY noticeable in a bad way. PCs with appropriate video cards and capable screen can do HDR, but its not really done much yet as its much harder for a development team to do over the wide range of hardware combinations on PC rather than the set target of console.
We're hearing about UE4 for quite some time now, yet only recently it seems that the engine is really taking off. Hell, we can almost smell Unreal Engine 5 LOL.

I recently sold my XB1 because I have no reason to keep it when I can play all it's games on my PC and have a better experience. The use of wind in this looks really interesting, I don't think I've seen a big budget action game use wind like that. Also great video. Shame we didn't get a DF Retro last week, but this is more than a good enough substitute.
I have played through the first Act and a little bit of the second so far on PC. With an i5 6600k @ 4.6GHz and a 1080. Almost a perfect locked 90 fps at 2560x1440 on Ultra so far. The game is not only looking great but plays great too.
How is this being compared to Uncharted 4? Despite both being third-person cover shooters, theyre completely different games. UC is about a dude who loves adventure and treasure, GOW is about a dude trying to save humanity from aliens. Everything about these games are different, their characters, setting, story, even though theyre both TPCS their gameplays feel extremely different. Makes more sense to compare UC to Tomb Raider and GOW to idk anything but UC lol.
I'm just shocked at how luscious Gears of War 4 looked, as I was used to the monochromatic, desaturated look the franchise is dubiously known for. So much color variety, and it's not just this game, it's seems more modern games are moving away from the desaturatated filter. Does this have to do with the rise of HDR?
The Xbox One has 8gb of unified memory with a portion of that reserved for system resources. The key here is that it is unified so there is no memory specifically designated as VRAM. The developers can use the memory as they see fit.
Ok, I can understand the technical differences, I think I'm disappointed with the settings offered me play or I can get quality, sorry but the settings in "medium and low" sucks!, look worse than any game.
finally a game with moments that make me say "TECHNOLOGY", destructible cover with chunks that interact with enemies and the environment with simulated wind throwing it everywhere? thats awesome.
This PC port is extremely well done, huge kudos to MS and Coalition. Now we just need MS to add it on Steam for the huge player base. Granted I will buy it on UWP and maybe more will be tempted to follow suit with this title. I am just scared the PC audience could die out a little fast. I guess we will have to wait and see. With this and Forza H3 both being ported pretty well maybe more will give UWP a chance. Knowing the PC community stubbornness though, doesn't seem likely. Excited to see the dedication Microsoft will be showing to the PC community regardless. I hope to see Crackdown 3 running as well as Gears 4 if it releases to PC.

Nope. Got worse for some in the recent patch. Turn out alot of Xbox One code was left over in the port. In other words....it will be a damn long time before it gets fixed if not ever.
I wish gears would go back to its roots with the gothic dark setting from the first two games. Now the characters look cartoony. They are trying too hard to appeal to kids. Gears 3 reminded me of sunset overdrive with its colors. I want the old gears back ! Not this cheesy cartoony crap

This game is GAME OF THE YEAR imo. Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4 have been back to back home runs.

Its pretty impressive this is made in a 3rd-party engine. Looks almost like its made in an in-house engine.

There's a huge difference. Look at the textures, foliage, object count, ground clutter, shadows, ambient occlusion (although that's more subtle and easier to miss), and anti aliasing (again, probably harder to spot with lots of motion in the scene.) The easiest difference to see is the textures.
TH-cam's lossy compression inherently normalizes image quality... I can't believe after all this time people are still going to youtube for "graphics comparisons" and wondering why they don't see a big difference.

Destiny did have that budget, (GTA 5 also had such a budget) but you have to remember those games are lot larger in scale, and you do have to spend just as much time texturing the entire world, as Gears does its linear campaign and maps. (im not hating on Gears its my favorite shooter, im just saying) Meaning you get a lot worse graphics because the "budget on texturing wasnt as condensed" if that makes any sense.
Destiny was made for the old systems as well.
As someone who uses Unreal engine, its really awesome seeing a team like Coalition making magic with it. Really shows what the engine is capable of.

Xbox One's Highlight of 2016. Holy shit we thought Quantum Break would be in that position. Oh how the mighty fall. QB is still fantastic though and (forgive me god) it has the best graphics on any platform this year. Still, gears of war 4 is damn good.

Would have liked to see a demonstration showing the antialiasing, but otherwise another great analysis video. It's hard to tell which is PC and Xbox. Devs did a fantastic job on the tech.
This game is amazing. I played a lot of Horde mode and the fact that there's cross play for this mode and campaign is what makes me love my Xbox/PC more than my rarely played PS4.

Its something any on-line vid simply can't get across.
There is a difference that is immediately noticeable when you turn it off, sort of in the same way as when you turn off the surround audio channels in your home theater. With a good setup you shouldn't really be aware of the surround speaker's presence, but turn them off and its IMMEDIATELY noticeable in a bad way.
PCs with appropriate video cards and capable screen can do HDR, but its not really done much yet as its much harder for a development team to do over the wide range of hardware combinations on PC rather than the set target of console.
My friend just brought a brand new Geforce 1070 and it come with GOW4 code. He doesn't play TPS game so he gave the code to me. Now I'm a happy man.

I have played through the first Act and a little bit of the second so far on PC. With an i5 6600k @ 4.6GHz and a 1080. Almost a perfect locked 90 fps at 2560x1440 on Ultra so far. The game is not only looking great but plays great too.

How is this being compared to Uncharted 4? Despite both being third-person cover shooters, theyre completely different games. UC is about a dude who loves adventure and treasure, GOW is about a dude trying to save humanity from aliens. Everything about these games are different, their characters, setting, story, even though theyre both TPCS their gameplays feel extremely different. Makes more sense to compare UC to Tomb Raider and GOW to idk anything but UC lol.

The Xbox One has 8gb of unified memory with a portion of that reserved for system resources. The key here is that it is unified so there is no memory specifically designated as VRAM. The developers can use the memory as they see fit.

This PC port is extremely well done, huge kudos to MS and Coalition. Now we just need MS to add it on Steam for the huge player base. Granted I will buy it on UWP and maybe more will be tempted to follow suit with this title. I am just scared the PC audience could die out a little fast. I guess we will have to wait and see.
With this and Forza H3 both being ported pretty well maybe more will give UWP a chance. Knowing the PC community stubbornness though, doesn't seem likely. Excited to see the dedication Microsoft will be showing to the PC community regardless. I hope to see Crackdown 3 running as well as Gears 4 if it releases to PC.
