Best scan tool for the money?

  • Is there actually one best scan tool? No there is not really one best scan tool. They all have their limitations without a doubt. I have had plenty of time's as mentioned in the video that one scan tool will not do what the others will do. There are many questions you have to answer when you are deciding on a scan tool. What are you going to be working on.
    Honda's and acura's? Asian vehicles overall? Domestic? Euro? they all have their pro's and cons with each brand.
    Do you need can-fd? Key programming options? adas calibrations? So many things to know.

    Agree! I use mainly my Snap-on Zeus & Autel Ultra. I wish Snap-on would put topology on their scan tools which I keep asking them when, but they say they are discussing it for the last 3 yrs. If I need topology, I use my Ultra. Each one has pros & cons & capabilities. The price of subscriptions & updates is getting insane. Autel Ultra was @$1600 for my last update. I bought my Zeus from the Rock & Roll Express truck when they first came out & I got a free 3 yr subscription with it b/c every time they came out with a new scan tool I upgraded to it plus I help out shops when they had questions or problems with theirs & my SO dealer asked me. I agree for DIYers just buy a code reader unless they plan on working on it themselves and understand PIDs & bi-directional controls and their capabilities. Great advice for Scanner Danner subscription b/c he has videos from Rosedale Tech when he was an instructor there. Best $11 to gain access to hundreds of in-classroom trainings! Great video!

      The scan tool I would choose doesn’t fit in a $1000 budget unfortunately for Asian and domestic unless you can find a verus edge used for $1k or perhaps a modis edge or something similar. I’ve found my snap on’s to be the best for Asian and domestic. Second in line would probably be topdon or autel but as mentioned in the video all scan tools fall short.
      I would ask the shop to invest into a scan tool for you. Techs shouldn’t have to buy their own scan tool. The only stipulation would be you can’t use it for side work which is fair

    I replaced my Snap On Modis Ultra that is completely updated for the Topdon Phoenix Smart and it definitely does more than the Modis imo. I've noticed you said some will scan modules or look at them when they are not fitted. My Snap On when i would hit display fitted systems only it would actually skip some. Overall for me it's Topdon. Not saying Snap On is bad, but they're way over priced for anything. Especially for any add ons which topdon has so many that i believe can be used with all the Phoenix line. My Modis helped me through a lot of stuff, but change is inevitable and hopefully they'll take note of the other companies.

      Topdon makes great scan tools. I’ve never had my snap on not include fitted systems. As mentioned in the video they all have their pros and cons. To be honest comparing a max to a modis is not a fair comparison. Comparing a verus edge or zeus to the max would be a comparison.

    The biggest question I'm having with after market scan tools is the bidirectional capabilities. Im a GM technician and am thoroughly experienced in GDS2 and Tech2. I'm having a hard time trying to find how aftermarket compares to them. I'm not interested in programming, adas, key fobs. It's simply the Pids and bidirectional functions. So my questions are for example, does this brand and model generally (reguardeless of vehicle manufacturer) have 50% or 75% or 90% pids and bidirectional features as the oem tools? Is there a rescouce that answers this in a specific manner?

    • @Enrightauto

      Reset codes are easy. Reset ECM / PCM and relearn. Just like reset your Trans and Thruttle body to factory default and relearn

      Autel are great but like all the rest they lack in area’s. Snap on is much better for Honda’s than autel. But not everyone works on as many Hondas as I do

    • @Enrightauto

      None because they are all competing with each other so they all do similar things but again some still lack in areas that other do not and Vice versa

    what a waste of time. i came to see your opinion on these models and some comparisons to get a better sense of what i need and want and instead i got some guy rambling about irrelevant stuff. if you care to make something more relevant please release a video comparing some scan tools within some pice ranges, their capabilities and your preference. I am a DIYer that being sad i agree that i will not use most of the functionality however i will be using it a lot. i resell cars and scan tools would be such big help in this line of work. i need a scan tool to replace my code reader. there u go man go make a good video.

    • @EarlStab
      @EarlStab 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Exactly. I’m in the market for a scan tool and wanted to hear the comparison. This was just a waste of time.

    • @Enrightauto
      @Enrightauto  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      You obviously didn’t listen to the video then. But diy’ers usually don’t. They are just looking for a silver bullet answer.
      And I’ve made multiple videos on scan tools but everyone wants all the answers in one video but then when you do that the video is too long and everyone complains. Then you l shorten it and there isn’t enough info. Then it’s not the right info. Can’t make all the whiners happy

      Can I start by saying I understand your frustration but I think it’s misplaced on the creator here. I too have been on this hunt before and it sucks. The short answer WAS in the first minute of the video: “All of them. “Techs would love to get a silver bullet in a scanner but it’s not the case. Also note that techs have a basic understanding from school but after that it’s the advanced training from experienced techs and hands on experience which gives them their knowledge. Being a tech is a lifelong education career and tomorrow there will be something new as the modern day vehicle changes daily. So to close my opinion on the matter I would say start with one and be prepared to buy another. It’s an expensive career and maximizing your profits on these flips will be key to ensuring your roi is worth the work and money. Good luck to you pal.

      I think your best route is to partner with a smog shop or privately with a smog tech. These techs are gonna be heavily invested in diag tools and experienced in getting cars ready for smog.

    Maybe talk about their different capabilities instead of wasting time assuming this "diyer" only need a code reader. I've plenty of those and HP tuner. I need a way to reprogram modules and dig deeper to continue to keep my newer vehicles repaired at home. We're evolving just like you guys. Specifically right now i need one good a jaguar junk somce this x-type in my yard has its security tripped. Any of thes $4-800 units fix that or program keys for one?

    having 6 tools i can give my experiance my old otc , and snap on ultra are only left standing all Autels died for different reasons, so if you want no sub just find a used snap on the its cake otherwise warranty is a whole different can of worms,,, Autel has never warrantied a single tool always found excuse!!!! my snap ons never died so not sure warranty not even sure otc still makes scan tools but they work,,,, bosch still works but exremely limited without a sub!!!! autel did do well for the breif life span of 3 different tools ? as an old tech i can vouch for having multiple scanners since there is no one size fits all!!!
