    To everyone confused: Plaster is not instead of the wax ring! It’s instead of the caulk. You set the toilet without the wax, trace the footprint of the base, pull the toilet, put down the wax, mix and set plaster along the pencil line, set the toilet and wipe…

    • @MessyPointedBlob

      Eh, I'm confused. It should be plaster of paris which is used to help level the toilet. It's not supposed to act as caulk or the wax ring, but deal with shitty floor jobs. If you are in a state like NY where buildings are decades old, you are going to find uneven floors often. The plaster of paris is also super easy to cleanup as it basically dissolves even when rock hard to a wet rag.
      Using plain plaster on the other hand will make a mess.

      For a house we had in Florida, a plumber asked if I had any leftover grout from the floor tiles I just put in. Floor was level, but he said he prefers grout because some overweight clients managed to pop a caulk seam and if it’s available, grout is just a little more work to guarantee no call backs from anyone.
      It looked great and I’m sure it was strong. After seeing the distaste for plaster vs caulk, I’m curious what is the community opinion on grout vs caulk?

    We use Harvey extra thick wax rings then bolt it down snug but not to much. Then use toilet shims for the low spots to stop it from rocking. Cut the shims and tighten it down. Then use Dap to seal the gap and hide the shims. Don't seal the whole gap all the way around and leave an inch of it open on the back, that way you can see the wax ring leaking before it causes a bunch of damage by leaking down through the floor.

    The point of the plaster was/is four-fold:
    ... To provide a stable base and shock absorber that you could tighten bolts against without risking cracking the tile (sitting down hard w/caulk, only, may otherwise cause this);
    .... To soak up water that may lea, so it didn't end up on ceiling downstairs, or creating rotting, moldy wood below;
    ... Also stopped sewer gas from a leaky wax ring, if damp air hit the plaster;
    ... And the plaster showed if you had a leak. Yellow (or brown) plaster coming out means you need a new ring and to re-set!
    Pssst ... Pro tip: Use a plaster drying delay agent if the plaster dries too fast for you.

    Ok, I can finally add some real knowledge to the discussion. First again, do use plaster. I have heard of plumbers using grout to set the bowl or thin set or structolite, but that would make hard as fuck to remove if there ever needs servicing. The key to a nice clean job is to set the toilet on plaster THEN a matching grout AND then a VERY light bead of clear 100% kitchen/bathroom silicone to seal the cement grout. I hope this helps someone.

I removed the grout spacers fill them in let it dry and then I seal it with grout sealer then I drill 1/16 hole in the back so if it’s leaking it’ll come out and you’ll know so you can fix it. I’ve never had one leak on me though and never stains. Never leaked for me at least and self levels for crooked floors. Best of luck.

    I watch this channel for entertainment purposes only, as I’m a retired plumber. When I started plumbing in 1972 in Los Angeles we were using Synkoloids spackling paste for caulking toilets. It wasn’t waterproof and turned yellow in time. Most plaster isn’t waterproof, unless it’s plumbers dynamite, that we used for top out testing closet rings before they came out with rubber test plugs. It’s a mixture of cement for strength and waterproofing and plaster for setting up within an hour. We had 200 plumbers in our shop in the 80’s, 90’s and we only used Dap tub and tile caulk for toilets. Sets fairly hard yet still somewhat resilient.

If you dont have one.. cut a credit card at a 90. Doing this makes that final step look way better Broski. Mist the caulk with some water first as well before using the profiler. Your customers will notice how clean it looks or WONT notice which is just as good because its invisble. That little bit of investment in a cheap kit steps the game up.

      Plaster underneath the toilet not on the outside.when you set a shower pan or tub...use moetar.

    I use pre mixed grout to seal. Shits great for when you don’t want to shim it to death (screwed up flooring) and a $20 tub of it will do like 50 toilets.

    Just FYI to all the plumbers- Those flexible supply pipes look bad and attract dirt. Bend a solid chrome plated supply line to add value to your install.

    Plaster on toilets must be a NY thing. I just promoted my maintenance tech to maintenance director. Being a former maintenance director myself, we went over the community with a fine tooth comb. It all made sense til we got to the issue of toilet setting. In NY, toilets are set with plaster. I had no idea. I'm a Florida boy. Learn something new every day

    My dad didn't use any caulk or grout to seal around the toilet and never had problem or leaking? Why would you want to use any, just incase you have to ever remove the toilet? Had to do it one time to snake the drain. He just replaced wax ring and reinstalled the toilet and was done.

    I was taught by master masons, and a toilet maker, that if a porcelian toilet is not fit 100% to the floor, it could crack from the stress. YOU ARE ALMOST RIGHT. The masons say to bed the toilet, just along the rim, with SANDED FLOOR GROUT. You wipe off any extra, and let it set overnight like grout does. If you want to put a thin bead of silicone over that to seal that yellowing urine, etc, that's perfectly fine. Good finishing work.
    Plaster goes yellow from urine. We all know how that surrounds toilets. Sorry ladies.

    I'm from upstate ny and I new a plumber from the city that used plaster of Paris. I crapped my pants the first time seen that mess. I guess it's good in an apt building and you have to do everything to prevent leaks. Thank God we don't have to use that mess upstate.

    Silicon or caulk around the toilet?

    On top of a tile floor, the tile should be set into grout. Specifically, sanded grout.

    If the tile guy is good, only a wax gasket is necessary for installing a water closet. Plaster and silicone is for hacks or guys. Make some rubber shims if you have a rocker.

    Old school. Plaster a knack. Wipe clean all the way around creating a separation. Dry shit comes right up. Grout the other way to go.
    Was told caulk was always a no no as it stains and discolors as well.
