Magic Circle Crochet Tutorial | Easy how to for beginners

  • This beginner's tutorial will show you how to make a magic circle, a.k.a. magic ring or adjustable loop.
    Skills needed:
    Chain (ch), double crochet (dc)
This is an invaluable technique when you're making a project in the round. Whether it's amigurumi, a bag, hats, coasters, etc., you'll want to begin by using a magic circle.
I begin by showing you how to complete a magic circle. Then I slow it down and carefully go over all of the steps. Finally, I demonstrate how to work stitches into the magic circle.
When practicing, I recommend using any "bulky" (5) or "super bulky" (6) weight yarn to practice. Use the hook size that your skein of yarn recommends. Lightly colored yarn is easier to see, which aids in understanding the anatomy of the stitches.

Hi, everyone! For this tutorial you’ll need to know how to chain and double crochet. I have videos for these techniques so if you need to, start there first. The magic circle can be completed with any stitch (sc, hdc, dc, tr, etc.). I am using the double crochet stitch in this video to help explain the initial turning chain. This video is for the magic circle technique only. Next steps can be found in the pattern you’re using. Let me know if you have questions!

This is by far the best video to learn how to make a magic circle! It's the only tutorial I've found that uses a large yarn, and goes slow enough for me to understand! Thank you!

Beginner here. I must have watched 10 magic circle videos last night, and tried about 20x. I can now easily see what I was doing wrong, that no one else explained: the initial chain is the first stitch; where to put the extra yarn, and by using that crazy bulky yarn, actually being able to SEE the thing come together. Thank you so much!

I saw everything I've done wrong, and I could finally make the magic circle. This tutorial works well and if anyone would look for a beginner tutorial for a magic circle, I would definitely recommend this one.

Out of all the videos I watched (had to of been near 30) this is the only video that I could actually see what was going on and you went slow enough for me to figure it out. I’ve only been crocheting for a day and this by far has been the best visual and explained video. Thank you❤️

This video is literally such a life savor for beginners and I am very very happy with how she went slow and used thick yarn so we could see 👍

The bulky yarn certainly makes completing a Magic Circle easier than thinner yarns or threads, but your instructions make the whole technique very clear. Thank you!

I get a needle and carefully lift out 1 or 2 ply - depending on wool thickness - about 7-8cm long, I cut the lifted thread and pull it off , you will be left with each wool price that has a thinner length towards the end. Then I thread a needle and thread it through exactly the same way you were doing it and tighten . W hen you thread the thinner ply through the cut ply just disappears in the knitting or crocheting and does not unravel. You can join any colour this way or even at the ends of the rows. If you want the colour to change suddenly, just measure the yarn you need and then cut the ply at that point and continue joining.
I have found the end result is very neat and no threads to wind in.
Hope you can understand the way I have described what to do.
Most experienced knitters will understand, some learners may have to try a few times

Hello I’m teaching myself how to crochet through TH-cam and TikTok. I came across your video, and when I said, thank you for having the patience to teach us who is learning this magic circle. Hope you come and have more videos and new videos cause I like how you help us through who’s learning how to crochet so thank you very much and you have a great evening.

Honestly I have watched about 6 different videos and honestly this one helped me the most because I could actually pull it close with out it knotting up. My issue was keeping the dang on circle from twisting and the chain piece from being crotchet with it.

Love your tutorial. I could actually see the yarn and where the hook was going. Then when you did it again slower. Even better Plus you told us what to do with the tail end. Then how that first chain actually counts. I had forgotten how to do this. In my old age what you don't practice you tend to forget.
