So which one is your favorite, the Magic Loop or Magic Ring? Do you have any other techniques to make this?

I've only ever done the Magic Ring method I learned from your Triceratops video. At first I was actually following it so carefully that I'm left-handed, but I was struggling to do it right-handed and then switching to the other hand after the ring was done. It took me 4 amigurumi projects to realise I can just mirror it directly smh...

I know I'm late to the party, but this video is the best video I have ever found on the Magic Loop and Magic Ring. Thank you so much for your slow pace and easy to understand phrasing and word choice when explaining how to make it.

I have watched about 30 different videos now trying to learn how to make a magic circle. Was starting to feel like my hands just weren't coordinated enough to crochet, but I did it thanks to you! You explain things in such a simple and slow way that it actually lets me try along with you instead of pausing and rewinding multiple times just for one step. You also just position your hands in a way that feels more open and shows me what you are doing, while slowly doing it. So glad I found your channel and look forward to learning more from you!

Until 2 years ago I had not crocheted in 40 years. When I retired from teaching school for 36 years and having acquired arthritis in both hands, I started crocheting again. Things have changed, and I so thankful for you tube. After this video,I just made my second magic loop. He really explains it so well but I did have to rewind SEVERAL times. Then it clicked. I am so excited.❤

Oh my god. This is an actual life saver. I've tried making magic circles so many times, and i managed them in the past, but the yarn I now have for amigurumi specifically, it just hasn't worked. It's really nice and soft and for the end prodicts, but it breaks rwlly easily every time i try to tighten the loop, no matter what I do, and I hadn't found a single other tutorial that could help me figure out how to do it where it didn't break. It's been months, and I honestly gave up on it, with just not being able to make that first step of nay project, but I found this video, and it's the first time I see the second technique you showed in here in any of the tutorials I tried, and it worked, I was able to make it without breaking the yarn for the first time and I'm so happy!! Thank you so much for this video, you have no idea how life-changing that is for me, as there were a few projects that were so important to me that I'd had to give up on entirely before this. Thank you for the amazing tips!

Thank you so much! I tried to watch a few other videos on making the circle/loop. I only ended up frustrated and angry. I thought, "great I just wasted all this money for something I'll never be able to do". But thankfully, I found your tutorial and now I can finally do it! Thank you for your patience and your clear explanations of what steps your making, you are an amazing teacher! God Bless You!!

Thank you for sharing the second method. I've been doing this for days. Even though the second method you said is harder. For me I'm able to get the loop.
Now I just need to NOT cut off the circulation to my finger.
I've been getting so frustrated and watching video after video and asked for advice in groups. Today. Well I have almost conquered it. Thanks for the video and thanks for explaining every step and showing it quite slowly. It may be 2 years old. But people like me will definitely still find it useful. ❤

I actually had huge problems getting the first method to work and always dreaded the magic circle, until I learned the second method from some of your earlier videos. I love it because I find it both much easier and more secure than the first method, so thanks for that!

Explanations*, not, explanaitions*. I've had 2 strokes, but when I was in the workforce, I was a Verifier. There were 2 of us, to verify the spelling, & math of 25 women's forms that came through. About, 500-24 page forms an 8 hour shift. I thought when I had the 1st stroke, I wouldn't be able to spell. But, I spell as well, or better than before. And, we didn't have spellcheck back then, either. I can't let spelling mistakes go by me. I apologize to anyone who might not want to be corrected. I know, I'd be glad, & am, if I spell a person's name incrrectly.

I have watched at least a dozen videos trying to teach this. Yours was slow enough, concise, gave options, and FINALLY, after multiple videos, attempts, and 2 months of giving up and finally circling back to find your video I got it to work. A little bIt more practice and I will be making my first little star. I've done cloths, beanies, cowls, triangle scarfs, but the magic ring was throwing me for a loop. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you so much for showing how to do both of these methods. I was trying to learn to crochet from amigurumi books and as you know, you generally start off with circular pieces for most projects and the Magic Ring (2nd method you showed?) is the method I saw being shown in books but was not as detailed. I kept getting stuck on why the tail wasn't tightening properly, so I really appreciate how clearly you showed how that worked!

A magic loop is just a loose slip knot. One day I was doing all kinds of maneuvers to make a magic loop. Then I was looking at it for the longest time. It was then then that I realized it was just a very loose slip knot. Give it a try.

I think some people make this more difficult than it is. These 2 methods are fine to use but I've been crocheting for 55 yrs & about 15 years ago I started doing the following, which is so much less complicated to a beginner. For example, if I need 6 sc into a ring (to begin my 1st round), I will just make a slip knot, ch 2, then crochet 6 sc into the first chain. I'll call that the base ch. The 2nd ch just becomes the ch-1 like you do at the beginning of any sc row or rnd. That 1st ch expands as you work all your sc into it. You can also take the tail & tighten it up. This is so much quicker & less confusing. If anyone is worried about the tail becoming loser, that's not a problem because you're going to weave the tail in anyway, like you would any of the loose ends of yarn. If you want to have 8 dc in the ring/circle, you would ch 4, then work 7 dc (the rest of your dc) into the first ring or you could say "into the 4th ch from hook". The other 3 chs, (of the beginning 4 chs), becomes your first dc, just like you would work 3 chs at the beginning of any dc round or row. So if you need to have 8 dc in a ring, this is what you'd do, " Ch 4, work 7 dc into the first ch." Then you have 8dc, because the other 3 chs are your 1st dc. If you needed to have your 1st round with 8 triple crochet, here's what you'd do (at the beginning of the round). "Ch 5, 7 Triple into the 1st ch." The remaining 4 chs become your 1st Triple crochet, just as you would ch 4 at the beginning of any triple crochet row, because it takes 4 chs to get up to the height of a Tr, just as it takes 3 chs to get up to the height of a dc at the beginning of a row. I've had 6 crochet books published & around 100 original designs published in magazines & no one has ever had a problem with this way I work my 1st round. It's so easy & quick!
Btw, we all know that the ch-1 at the beginning of a sc row does not become your 1st sc. That's why with a sc round, you do 2 chs at the beg, but work 8 sc in the ring & not just 7.

Lol. I use both of these already. Just found the video because some dumb pattern STRESSED to use the "loop", not the "ring". No reason why. This would've been a nice shortcut to learning before I figured it out myself, though. Good pacing & great camera angles!

Omg! Lol how hard! I use to make and couldn't remember. Everyone on you tube loves making that x. I knew I never made an x. Like another person said its basically just a loose chain. Well sort of! I finally remembered with the help of another older woman. Just start like normal crochet. Then use your tail and make the circle to crochet in. No wrapping no x if you really want to know yell and ill get you the link to woman who does it same way.

I usually do the first way but I like the look of the second one better. I may start using it. I can almost always see where the ring started with the first method.

Very interesting! :D I also use cotton so breaking yarn is no concern for me. The loose end of the magic loop I use as stitch marker for every round until it is completely weaved in. I can leave it there for it has the same color as my work and you won't see it afterwards unless you know it and look very very very closely. Doesn't disturb me at all plus serves a purpose: I always know where my rounds begin/ end. :)

I just watched a tutorial from B Hooked where she did the first method to start the ring and then after she pulled it tight she weaved the tail around the inner stitches on one of the sides so it goes all the way around again (just like your second option) and then pulled it tighter. So you get to start with option one, but end with option two. You’re option two would probably be quicker though since you don’t need to get out the needle to make the second loop.
