A Week In Darkness: The Purest Medicine | Aubrey Marcus Podcast

  • I have experienced most of the plant medicines and transformative practices known to man and none have been as powerful and as pure as spending 6 days in absolute darkness and silence. In this podcast we flip the script and AMP Veteran Erick Godsey lead’s me through the story using the framework of the hero's journey. I talk about the emotions and thoughts racing through my head in a chronological order, and they get more intense as the days went on.
I initially experienced strong feelings towards exercising minimalism, but quickly my brain moved on to more delicate subjects such as how to love, how to love yourself, how to let go of someone you love, things like that. As it put me back together, though, it broke me for the second time, and that time was a lot more profound. Since the visions and hallucinations that I received kept getting stronger and stronger each day, my body kept leading me on this path towards having inner monologues about very deep topics, such as what is the meaning of life, and so on.
Adjectives fail to describe the gravity of what I encountered, from the incredible difficulty of grappling with my mind, to the unimaginable beauty of the emotions and visions. To synthesize my findings into a single mantra it would be: Love Yourself and Be Honest. Oh, and for anyone who thinks the brain doesn’t produce DMT endogenously in this state, since vivisection is not an option, I would challenge them to experience the darkness as an N=1 ;) If you’re interested in experiencing this medicine, this is the place that I went to: darknessretrea...

Ellen Ng when feeling is accompanied by vision, one will suddenly find themselves will to do be or say or think anything in any when or where. Men feel they have to be “logical”, and seeing is believing, so it’s a relief off their mind to actually let the pedal hit the metal, that permission to “hammer away” per se.
Feeling without vision is just blind luck, or a tone deaf opera singer. Beautiful yes, but pointless, like the babbling of a baby, or of the brooks. Nice, but only for tuning out. Like people complaining, not truly important, the silence in the chaos is the answer, never leaves.

Aubrey man... I’ve been watching you for years.... I actually met you and took a picture with you in front of Onnit a couple years ago when I was visiting Austin. I mean every word of this, this is the calmest... most in tune with yourself I’ve ever seen you. There’s a real visible equipoise in you this whole conversation, and like I said I’m aware of these things and have been watching for years. Very inspiring. I’m exactly 10 years younger than you, and you’re a life model for me. I feel like I know you better after this conversation. Thank you for this and everything else you’ve put out.

Aubrey, whether you were clear or unclear of your intentions being selfish or selfless, I was having suicidal thoughts earlier today, and felt very desperate. I took a nap for a few hours to hopefully reset, and woke up, make some food, and this popped up in my feed, and it it helping me feel less alone, because I struggle with the selfish vs selfless inner conversation myself, and it drives me nuts. But when you and Erick spoke about how the way you feel is influenced very much by the promises we keep (or don't) with ourself. Thank you again for this episode. Its really helping me.

Brother, I did this for a week last year, I had no idea this was now a practice! I did 7 days and like you, it changed my life forever, this is something I truly hope many take the opportunity to do so! Legitimately life changing, and for those who are already in thier spiritual path, it will take everything you already have experienced to a whole new level that beyond comprehension! Amazing practice!

I’m not even through the video yet but I’ve never had a video make me break down into tears. There were so many points along the way that were exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been having a really hard time with a relationship I thought was going to be the one and it’s been almost half a year since we’ve been broken up and I wasn’t able to get my mind off her and some of the things you said really made me realize I was loving the idea of who she could have been, but not who she truly was. And i believe now that that is the reason we did not work out. And when you brought up your father saying you deserve to be loved I ugly cried for I don’t even know how long. This is the third video I’ve listen to from you and it has made you my favorite TH-camr on the platform. Thank you for truly blessing me with your words. You’re amazing good sir

Hey man. I formed an uneducated uninformed dislike of you somewhere in my psyche. I came across this video in my feed and played it. Wow. I was very wrong. Some of what you said during thst talk about reading from the book of lies and other points really struck a nerve within me and made me see my life much more clearly. I am now a fan. Thank you so much Aubrey. When one of us goes on a difficult inward journey and shares it in a non egocentric way then it really does help and serve humanity as a whole. I am most grateful for you and I hope that one day I can be as brave as you were to do the spiritual work in a non-entheogen setting like a darkness retreat. Thank you thank you thank you

I’m a regular audio listener and this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to get on TH-cam and write a comment. Aubrey, bro. This was one of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard. Others can disagree, but for me and where I’m at and the journey I’ve been on this was exactly what I needed to hear at this present moment in my life. Even though you and I have had, and live, totally different lives I feel like you speak a language that is on the same frequency as the words I never say out loud but feel within myself. I sound corny but who gives a fuck. I could go on but you get the message. Bravo man keep doing what you’re doing 🙏

YES! YES! YES! I am so happy now knowing that I am not the only one who enjoys sitting with his noise cancelling headphones on in the dark for several days in a row!!! Seriously. This makes me so happy right now. I've gotten so much insight during these periods and I feel so much more connected to myself. It feels so good knowing why I am the way I am and why I do the things I do.

I just experienced Darkness a few weeks ago for 7 days. I felt I was about to "crack" after four days, and let in light, but stayed in seclusion. I need to enter the dark again, and go further. I was amazed at how much light and images my brain conjured up for me to "see". I was also fasting. Outside noises were troubling.

I prayed to god for guidance to be able to feel again so I could start to understand myself, my path, my purpose, and how to love life. That was about seven years ago. It was one of my sincerest prayers ever in life. It’s taken me years and years of experience eight metaphorical darkness to have the bravery to want to walk into the darkness fully, to understand the magnamity of the gifts waiting there, that I’ve been peeling layers, and we can peel the layers forever. I’m so grateful to be able to feel, to be able to welcome feelings that I used to believe would destroy me. Miigwech for your bravery and for the mirror.

This was the most deeply cathartic podcast I’ve ever watched. Some part of my psyche was hungry for this. I had waking dream states where it was me in that cave you where describing, feeling and thinking things before you said them, exactly as you said them. At points I felt like I was somehow slipping into a psychedelic trance and had to pause this to breath and come back. It was like 5 years of psychotherapy via proxy. Thank you. Wow! SO many reasons to love this video and shared story! Feeling so inspired but also I would like to share my love for the two of you! Listening to two men be completely open, honest and vulnerable is BRAVE. I am American and can only speak to the messages I receive around me. Messages from a toxic masculinity culture. To be a man means to be strong, not cry, not show emotions other than the ones society will accept as “manly”. Listening to the respect each of you were giving one another. I’m just so impressed and grateful. This is going to help other men open up and share raw and very personal and private matters. How lovely it feels when I see things like this. What I noticed right away was ownership phrases like “What this is bringing up for me....” so the ability to recognize his story and message could be different than yours but you’re willing to explore the narrative of his experience TOGETHER! Just...job well done. I lost it when you discussed Whitney(is that her name?) and asking you if she’s doing it right! Oh man! That stirred some real shit up for me! Thank you for mirroring what I need to see. I already have made peace and have forgiven myself for doing exactly that...wanting to place someone in MY bubble and trying to change them when I need to just let them BE exactly who they are in that moment...without my interference. I’m just so moved by this and am so grateful for the universe to drop this in my lap to see, learn and grow.
    Namaste 🙏

3 times now I have heard you speak on an interview. That is it and those 3 time influenced the 3 most impactful decisions I have made in the past 10 years. Thank you brother. Funny as it is I didn't know this was actually a thing and I just put a 20 foot storage container underground where I am building a wellness retreat center. I had a dream a couple months ago and began building it then for sits in darkness as well as a plant medicine experiences intended to allow the participant to face death and hopefully choose to accept it and move to the light. The experience was inspired by a death ritual the Egyptians used in ancient Egypt. I was told to build the entire thing through inner wisdom and the next steps would continue to be delivered and they definitely have been. coolest part is almost every time I act on faith shortly after I find or am shown something that reaffirms I have in fact taken action on a variety of things that are creating a retreat center and experience unlike anything out there. I flew to Costa Rica for an Iboga experience 2 weeks after I saw your interview on Joe's podcast I was there. planned to stay a week and ended up learning under the Shaman for 4 months. I got my shaman's blessing and encouragement to assist opiate addicts with a micro dosing schedule she taught me. I have since helped dozens of in some cases nearly lifetime users get clean, heal themselves and their brains from what the opiates had damaged. I love the space your in during this interview. I hope integrating your learnings was successful. Much Love and Thank You Marcus

I could see my own life story, own thoughts and self realisation processes. It felt like I am diving in own thoughts, verbalised by you. Like it is me talking.. Strange, and magnificent feeling, similar to some psilocybin experiences (which I had a couple in the past) Me 58, you 38 - but It doesn’t matter. This is timeless - eternal . Kingdom of God !

Thank you Marcus. This is the first time I listen to you, and wow!
Your 6 days are so beautifully unpacked for us , and you articulate everything I’ve experienced with plant medicine to date. You also have, unknowingly, humbly, taken me to that last piece of my puzzle... why I couldn’t be loved... because it was a pain I couldn’t allow myself to feel. I offered my love to others, but I wouldn’t receive their love for fear that I’d let them down by not measuring up.
Thank you also for sharing Whitney’s “am I doing this right?” ... I, as a mum, have stepped into a wholesome love for my children, knowing that my approval offered them freedom , choices, opportunity for them to create their own divinity and purpose.
There will always be a time for lovers to ask this question... it’s the youthful side of self love... now, you can always say “yes, you are perfect”... as are you Mr Aubrey.
    Thank goodness for you!

Hey Aubrey, thanks for sharing this. Very insightful and fascinating podcast! Loving it. Around 45:40 you are discussing the meaning of visions in the darkness. Carl Jung had a lot to say about these interior realms and the figures therein. He even developed a technique for dialoguing with the figures which he called “active imagination”. Jung’s experiments with active imagination are documented in ‘The Red Book’ and by his own account formed the “nucleus”, so to speak, of his whole psychology. Perhaps you’re already aware of this but I thought it was worth sharing. I find Jung’s comments on active imagination particularly useful in that they offer ‘maps’ to psychological territory. Interestingly he comments on the ‘desert’ and the abundance of visions to be found there in his Red Book. Really enjoying the content. Thank you 🙏

I've been readin Jung's work for a long time now and find his explorations extremely deep and actual. I love reading him before i go into meditations. Feels like Jung was a local guy in those realms

The sacred dark. So good to hear more and more people acknowledging what ancient people’s experienced, the healing, visionary , nurturing dark.
Rainer Maria Rilke wrote a beautiful poem which I set to music ‘You darkness which I come from. I love you more than all the fires that fence in the world. For the fire makes a circle of light, which includes some and not others, But the darkness pulls in everything shapes and fires animals and myself. How easily it gathers them powers and people . And it is possible a great presence is stirring beside me. I have faith in nights’. I also wrote a song ‘VIVID BLACK’. I love the dark so deeply. It has been demonised and slandered. Thank you xx

Awesome talk you two. I too have resisted love and loving because it's "easier". But I just recently had a deep loving experience/relationship and I'm extremely grateful for it, although it has had me in tears and pains for quite a few times; anger and hatred followed but in the end it's all much, much, better than apathy. It's about growing up and accepting the reality of our existence; namely that you'll have to let go of everything eventually - and that's THE prerequisite and absolutely beautiful. Cheers!

I just recently found you on Spotify and watch quit of few podcast you had with Matias de Stefano, and I wonder what was your story of getting to where you are. We all have are own,
But listening to this it really unfolded the unknown, that resonates with my own…
    From darkness to the light….
And been able to keep the light on. I agree with you once you start loving yourself everything dissolves. Love is a rebirth that we are are born with.
It’s very rear to find specially man to be where you are and open up to their on Journey of truth, that you see life as love that you are.
    Keep it up Aubrey !!

Very insightful and offering much contemplation about my own journey. Thanks always.
I find for myself, the points made about self love, loving others and telling the truth and being honest along with ones own service to self and other very resonant. This is a point of deep consideration of my own meditations. It was enlightening hearing some new perspectives. I’ve had the experience that Love is Love. As in all inclusive and also without condition. It felt like the giving and receiving of Love is simultaneous and instant. I have difficulty loving myself. I sense now, I remember, in listening to this, Love is Love. My love for myself is more available if I’m not in the way of it. It’s not for me but I am loved when I love, so the direction of it’s outpouring is now felt to be free and without conditions. This was hugely beneficial to me. Thank you so much!
Also, I still love my Onnit clubs and maces, simply the best investment I ever made. Thanks for everything! Much Love! :)
