    It's funny watching PC reviews (from everyone) and getting what ideas reviewers have about the work you can do on PCs: it's all office work (Word, Google Docs, Excel exc.) or video/photo editing. No one even mentions engineering programs, calculus programs, or even Software Development works. I understand you review products one the base of your experience, but in this way you give the idea that the purpose of laptops is to write essays or to edit photos/videos. Great review btw

      I always think the same thing. I just want to know if it can open and run Solidworks, CATIA, and some other stuff and run them smoothly. I don't need them to run and render my final projects, but I use my laptop to look at designs with customer or to make quick changes on the road. I do all my heavy modeling at my desktops.

      I feel like that's a pretty easy comparison. XPS is the Windows based leader right now really. Surfaces are still way too tablet focused.

    • @christopherjroura8504
      @christopherjroura8504 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DoubleAIV this is a pretty standalone review that isn’t really compared much to Mac. But the reason why it may seem that it’s being compared to Mac is because that’s Microsoft’s direct competition with this laptop. So the specs and features put into this directly compete with Mac. The unibody design, the keyboard and trackpad, the overall design is intended to beat Macs implementation of these features. So it only makes sense if you compare against your competition and even though you may not use Mac (I mean no disrespect here) that’s the intention Microsoft is going for. Microsoft wants this to be matched against the Mac.

    • @michaelraiwet
      @michaelraiwet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just picked one of these up over the holidays and I am enjoying it. I was in the same boat whether or not to game on a laptop, but once I look at the pro's and con's of a gaming laptop, like a massive power adapter that you would have to carry with a gaming laptop. I was satisfied with my choice. I also thought of the streaming gaming services that are coming out in regards to gaming on a laptop. Not having thunderbolt 3 is not a deal breaker. Watching videos with the bars is not that bad we do it all the time with other devices. I usually don't watch you tube videos in full screen mode. I like your review. I purchased the 13" with the i5 8gb ram and 256ssd.

    I had a MacBook Pro for 5 years - no complaints whatsoever. Switched to Windows and I bought the dandy new Surface Book 2 and used it for 2 years. I now have a dead battery that doesn't charge. The screen would never detach smoothly. The base of the laptop is swollen now.. not sure if the heat got it or the dead battery. Unlike the Mac, the Surface book that I bought in China has Chinese hardcoded into it - can never completely get rid of it. OH, we see that you have changed your language to English, but maybe you still need to see the start up messages in Chinese? Since I could never cleanly or easily detach the screen, never used the touch screen function. With the key board attached its just counter intuitive... and oh yes, browser adware and malware and the Gandcrab ransomware
    I am going back to the Mac now...

    Thank you for presenting this review from a productivity viewpoint. Anybody doing vmware/ Autocad knows not to buy this, I dont need the reviewer to compare this to some heavy power laden beast. I really prefer the aspect ration of the Surface laptops. After using one it is hard to go back to the old dvd watching aspect ratio of most laptops.

    Thing is, it lacks TB3 which is a huge disadvantage in terms of its versatility and longevity - can’t use TB3 docks, eGPUs, portable SSDs etc. And the MacBook Pro is priced nearly identical spec for spec.

    It’s such a strange time in the Mac vs Windows world. I find the benefits of my MacBook dwindling. I’ve always had a built windows desktop for gaming and editing but I’ve used a MacBook and iPhone even since I could afford to. But I just ordered a pixel 4 and I’m excited about the Surface Duo. I honestly don’t know what my next laptop will be and I’m kind of glad I’m not in the market for one. Apple is disappointing me lately and I really hope they do something wow worthy soon, Cause AirPods pro and a 16 inch MacBook aren’t really impressive. Yeah the Mac Pro is a great break from the non upgradable legacy but for what it costs does it matter?
    I’m excited about what Microsoft and google are doing but I’m worried about what apple is doing. That’s a sentence I never thought I would type and one I really wish I didn’t have to. Let’s hope 2020 has a lot to offer from everyone

      Brawndo I tend to be the opposite. The majority of work I do is fixing other people’s computers and so I’m usually using windows for software issues and reinstalls. Thinking about it now, almost every PC I’ve fixed as been some kind of software problem and every Mac I’ve fixed as been hardware. Also video editing, I prefer premier pro so I usually run it on my desktop.

      Hunter X Hunter no it’s definitely quite terrible. Its design language is an incoherent jumble of Aero, Metro, and Fluent. It often comes loaded with bloatware and ads baked into the OS. Its data practices are horrendous miscarriages of privacy. It’s missing basic features like document previewing and a decent terminal. It’s file system is a god damn nightmare for developers. It can’t even use accessories out of the box, and forces users to deal with drivers for everything. For some fields, it’s missing critical apps many require to do work (such as Final Cut Pro and Homebrew). It also shoehorns touch into the experience despite it being detrimental in a number of ways thanks to how bad touch translates into desktop software.
      The only thing it has going for it is gaming, which this laptop definitely cannot handle for much beyond casual, mobile-style gaming.

    • @thebuddercweeper
      @thebuddercweeper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gfyGoogle I agree with everything you just said. It’s why I switched to Mac and why I will n3ver use a windows computer as my primary device until Microsoft actually make a good stable OS (which given their unfortunate habit of bringing over outdated code, functionality and looks from the last major version, seems unlikely to be Windows).

    • @azenyr
      @azenyr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Cam well if you buy anything on the surface line like this laptop, the windows that it comes with is clean, purely stock, with no crazy drivers or whatever. Just 100% clean no bloatware and no hiccups. Everything works flawlessly, without bugs, and you almost never (if ever) get a crash or any software problems on a surface device. Because just like Apple, surface devices are designed by microsoft, such as their software. So its a perfect combination of clean, optimized and stable windows with stable and perfect hardware.
      The mix of design languages you are talking about is getting fixed day by day, and the latest Windows 10 is more coherent than never. It is starting to actually look beautiful, smooth and well done. The next updates will probably make it even better, microsoft is trying really hard to solve every problem possible.
      The things about privacy, i get why they do them, but the first time you turn on your computer, you get asked and informed about those settings and you can turn them all of, they don’t come ON by default either, you have to literally click allow or deny.
      The things about drivers you said is getting more automatic by the day. I dont even remember the last time i had to deal with drivers... you plug something in, its ready to use because microsoft is changing to a different way if handling drivers (DCH Drivers). And all manufacturers are starting to enter this new driver scheme. They are completely automatic to install and they dont mess with other system files, its clean and safe with no input required from the user.
      Also windows now has linux subsystem so you can literally use a linux terminal with a complete ubuntu or debian or whatever install behind it, to develop on it.
      Yes windows is a nightmare, or was, but is growing and getting perfected each day, mac users should really just stop hating on it...

    I think your point about this being not a gaming notebook or a video editing power house are valid. But I was wondering, did you run rocket league at the native resolution of that screen? If so just turning down the resolution a touch would probably lend that to be much more usable. And for the video editing, I think throwing a 4k timeline at it seems a little unfair, 1080p would probably be a more likely use case I'd imagine. Great review, just seemed a little strange in places.

    The lack of Thunderbolt 3 at this point is absolutely ridiculous. I'm a OG surface book owner and honestly, while the magnetic charge/dock connector is nice, for the love of God you're not Apple 10 years ago the proprietary crap doesn't do anything but cost you sales. I'd go with any of Razer or Lenovo's equipment over this just for this reason and I don't feel like I'm alone on this.
    When you're paying this much for a laptop plus the equipment required to dock it I'd be happier if the dock was interchangable.

    I hope it does have a better „paint job“ than my Surface Pro 6. The black of my tablet is literally peeling of on all the edges (and I am ultra careful with the thing). Even though I like the Surface line, this is really disappointing.

    Seems like this is competition for the MacBook Air, great school or work laptop, not really competing with the 15” MBP which can pretty much handle gaming and video editing (at least those are two uses I have for mine but I have the upgraded GPU.) It seems like a nice laptop though and it seems like Microsoft are doing good stuff with their hardware.
