I LOVE my Surface Book and Laptop 2, but they could always better in battery life, battery life, and horsepower. We buy these things like Apple fans do. They are WONDERFUL to use. Practical? Probably not. I use Civil 3d daily. These do NOT cut it for that. Great for everything else I do though, and I adore the form factor! The keyboards are to die for! I've never used Apple track pads, but i feel that these are fantastic also!

Thank you for another excellent overview Lisa. I had high hopes for the 15" with a custom AMD processor. Love the build quality and design of the Surface Laptop 2, but need more power. Will end up trading it in for a Dell XPS 15 with the 9th gen Intel processor. It's a much better balance of performance and battery life. Thanks again for your excellent reviews!
From what I heard it is much more expensive though. Was debating whether it would be wiser to go with the 13.5 inch Intel surface 3. Though I like the 15 inch better, if the i5 13.5 inch is faster being Intel rather than this AMD CPU I would prefer to have a faster 13.5 inch computer. The non carpet version of the 13.5 would bump the cost up another $100 I believe and give you a larger drive but still much cheaper than the Intel business version of the 15 inch.

Sexy machine, it has an awesome speaker output, but severely reducing the amount of I/O ports is an instant dislike(rather hate), at least to me. Why would manufacturer do this? The VAIO SX12 is way smaller but has more I/O ports than this 🙄. Lovely review as always, Lisa! Love the shirt!
I think the Surface Laptop 3 - 15" is a starting place for Microsoft. Just make a 15" version of the 13" one they already have. In the past, they've listened to what people say about their products and make the necessary changes over time. It's an OK starting point but I bet by version 3 of this (Surface Laptop 6 - 15"), it'll be the one most people will want.
The only missed opportunity IMO is that Microsoft thought having the same battery capacity for 15" the same as for the 13" for some reason. Whyyyy? Also, can't wait for reviews of the Ryzen7 version and reviews for the Ice Lake i7 versions.
Love to see debunked the base models. I hate when people praise some devices because of “entry models”, but they give medium configurations to TH-camrs ‘cause they know the base model does not provides a good enough experience (either processor or storage i.e.). It's slower in Premiere because Premiere doesn't support VCN which accelerates playback and encoding. Right now Premiere only supports Quicksync (Intel's alternative to VCN). So it's not that AMD is lacking on power or features but Premiere not supporting all the features on AMD iGPU. Honestly, it's a shame some reviewers are misleading people into believing the CPU is weak even though it's the app at fault here. You should have tested in Davinci Resolve instead, which supports both VCN and Quicksync. That way you can do an apples to apples comparison.
Average display, below average battery capacity, average processing power, a premium build for a very very premium price. This was the definition of a missed opportunity. A big disappointment!
Will you be reviewing the 13 inch model? It honestly seems like an entirely different machine with the Intel processor and a battery that makes a bit more sense for the screen size and overall power draw.
Great review as usual. I wonder how many docks on the market are USB-C but DON'T require TB3? I suspect many, meaning the inclusion of USB-C actually does expand the selection of possible docks beyond the (mediocre, ageing) Surface Dock. BUT! Surface Dock's firmware combined with recent Windows updates (I can't disentangle which is responsible) has greatly improved the stability of the Surface Dock experience. The machine will stay asleep! USB devices won't get spontaneously detached! Screens won't swap!
I was really hoping MS would set the bar higher with the screen (anti-glare, resolution, color accuracy), and battery life, but I'll probably purchase it anyways as few offer the build quality + 3:2 aspect.
The chip choice is a little lacking for a laptop this size. Just a 15W APU, when if you match the storage and RAM, for the same price the XPS 15 would get you a hexacore Comet Lake and GTX 1650. Sure the screen form factor is better on this, but it's a really hard sell for me when the chipset is so underpowered for this price and size range.
A 360 degree convertible or a tablet hybrid is ergonomically better. The Surface Pro 6 and Pro 7 or a lower end HP Spectre x360. There are more, of course.
2:33 seeing this laptop form factor. Immediately think of thinkpads if they migrate to 3:2 AR, they would have enough clearance for classic 7-row keyboard, track point clickpads, and a large trackpad.

Microsoft has adopted the Apple business practice of mediocre upgrades at premium prices and never giving users what we want. Tired of settling so I won't be upgrading to anything in this line.
When this was first announced, a TH-cam comment praised its $1200 price comparing it to MBP 15's $2400. But seeing these reviews, I came to think that Microsoft should have used better parts or set a lower the price. I mean, surely, it is half the price of MBP 15.4", but it is still expensive, and for what? The screen is smaller than MBP 15, the resolution is lower, the colour gamut is lower, vastly inferior ports (MBP has 4 thunderbolt ports), a mid-range CPU (MBP 15 starts with i7), half the storage/RAM, inferior in-built speaker quality, and so on. It does not look a premium product, but with a premium price. Maybe $999 would have been more appropriate.

I think that one of the biggest reasons this 15" Surface Laptop isn't supremely powerful is because Microsoft doesn't want it competing with the Surface Book, but now that you can get them without Alcantara, I reaaaaally want one. It's just pointless for me. Ever since I got an iPad, I haven't really touched my MacBook much.

I just tried out the Surface 3 Laptop at Best Buy and while the Alcantara fiber was on fleek, the keyboard overall was atrocious. Thin chiclet-style keys a la Apple and the entire keyboard flexed whenever I hit a key in the middle.

I'm now considering between the new xps13 and the surface laptop 3 13" (now lower priced for black friday) - can you guys tell me if the difference in the lpddr3/4 is a considerable advantage for the lpddr4 (in the surface), and also because of the iris+ that the xps lacks - I get the impression that the surface has better stats?
I am actually quite turned off by the small battery. If they had just gone for a 70+ Wh battery this would have been a killer laptop for an engineering student.
It's not really that easy. You have to peel off the plastic dots on the base and you find non standard screws. Changing the battery also looks like a hassle. You can see ifixit review if you're interested
@@rationalityfirst Microsoft did say it was not user serviceable, but it would still be serviceable. An authorized repair shop would have no problems fixing anything inside
Did you find any backlight bleeding on the lower part of the screen? I got a 15 inch with i7 Intel (enterprise ver.) 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, my screen has a noticeable bleeding in the lower part with 75%+ brightness. I've read on notebook check that is a common issue on this laptop. Also, the grey color is brushed aluminum or sleek like the black one? I fear the black coating will suffer from scratches over time

The reason why it does not have a thunderbolt 3 type c connector is because it is proprietary of intel and this laptop having AMD cpu means they will not have thunderbolt 3. I think we will see thunderbolt 3 connector in AMD CPU's in future when it becomes USB 4 standard.
Shubham Pawar Intel released the tb3 protocol royalty free to everyone to improve adoption so amd laptops should have it next year, however, the business version of the surface laptop 3-15” has 10th gen intel but still no thunderbolt even though ice lake has built in tb3 controller. They don’t want to include thunderbolt because they want people to buy a surface dock.
I don't know if you all know this but Vega graphics in the Ryzen line kill Intel Integrated graphics by a lot at least in the desktop space. I was surprised by the graphics performance results.
I wonder how you missed it, when you where talking about the internals the video was showing key travel, track pad feel and touch/pen performance. What you where talking about and what you showed was not in sync.

I LOVE my Surface Book and Laptop 2, but they could always better in battery life, battery life, and horsepower. We buy these things like Apple fans do. They are WONDERFUL to use. Practical? Probably not. I use Civil 3d daily. These do NOT cut it for that.
Great for everything else I do though, and I adore the form factor! The keyboards are to die for! I've never used Apple track pads, but i feel that these are fantastic also!

Thank you for another excellent overview Lisa. I had high hopes for the 15" with a custom AMD processor. Love the build quality and design of the Surface Laptop 2, but need more power. Will end up trading it in for a Dell XPS 15 with the 9th gen Intel processor. It's a much better balance of performance and battery life. Thanks again for your excellent reviews!

From what I heard it is much more expensive though. Was debating whether it would be wiser to go with the 13.5 inch Intel surface 3. Though I like the 15 inch better, if the i5 13.5 inch is faster being Intel rather than this AMD CPU I would prefer to have a faster 13.5 inch computer. The non carpet version of the 13.5 would bump the cost up another $100 I believe and give you a larger drive but still much cheaper than the Intel business version of the 15 inch.
@@s7473 Good point. I'll give it a look as well. As far as pricing, you can get a pretty powerful XPS 15 config + a 1080p screen for even better battery life for about $1,500.
If you get a Dell XPS 15 be aware of the swelling battery issue. If you don't know about that google it.

Sexy machine, it has an awesome speaker output, but severely reducing the amount of I/O ports is an instant dislike(rather hate), at least to me. Why would manufacturer do this? The VAIO SX12 is way smaller but has more I/O ports than this 🙄.

I think the Surface Laptop 3 - 15" is a starting place for Microsoft. Just make a 15" version of the 13" one they already have. In the past, they've listened to what people say about their products and make the necessary changes over time. It's an OK starting point but I bet by version 3 of this (Surface Laptop 6 - 15"), it'll be the one most people will want.
verdict: it is beautiful.
I don't even watch these looking to buy anything, its just relaxing to watch and listen.

It's slower in Premiere because Premiere doesn't support VCN which accelerates playback and encoding. Right now Premiere only supports Quicksync (Intel's alternative to VCN). So it's not that AMD is lacking on power or features but Premiere not supporting all the features on AMD iGPU. Honestly, it's a shame some reviewers are misleading people into believing the CPU is weak even though it's the app at fault here. You should have tested in Davinci Resolve instead, which supports both VCN and Quicksync. That way you can do an apples to apples comparison.

Great review as usual. I wonder how many docks on the market are USB-C but DON'T require TB3? I suspect many, meaning the inclusion of USB-C actually does expand the selection of possible docks beyond the (mediocre, ageing) Surface Dock.
BUT! Surface Dock's firmware combined with recent Windows updates (I can't disentangle which is responsible) has greatly improved the stability of the Surface Dock experience. The machine will stay asleep! USB devices won't get spontaneously detached! Screens won't swap!

The chip choice is a little lacking for a laptop this size. Just a 15W APU, when if you match the storage and RAM, for the same price the XPS 15 would get you a hexacore Comet Lake and GTX 1650. Sure the screen form factor is better on this, but it's a really hard sell for me when the chipset is so underpowered for this price and size range.

A 360 degree convertible or a tablet hybrid is ergonomically better. The Surface Pro 6 and Pro 7 or a lower end HP Spectre x360. There are more, of course.

2:33 seeing this laptop form factor. Immediately think of thinkpads if they migrate to 3:2 AR, they would have enough clearance for classic 7-row keyboard, track point clickpads, and a large trackpad.

I believe that's a business edition configuration, or at least in the UK. It's the only version i can find that has that option.
Microsoft has adopted the Apple business practice of mediocre upgrades at premium prices and never giving users what we want.
Tired of settling so I won't be upgrading to anything in this line.
When this was first announced, a TH-cam comment praised its $1200 price comparing it to MBP 15's $2400. But seeing these reviews, I came to think that Microsoft should have used better parts or set a lower the price. I mean, surely, it is half the price of MBP 15.4", but it is still expensive, and for what? The screen is smaller than MBP 15, the resolution is lower, the colour gamut is lower, vastly inferior ports (MBP has 4 thunderbolt ports), a mid-range CPU (MBP 15 starts with i7), half the storage/RAM, inferior in-built speaker quality, and so on. It does not look a premium product, but with a premium price. Maybe $999 would have been more appropriate.

I think that one of the biggest reasons this 15" Surface Laptop isn't supremely powerful is because Microsoft doesn't want it competing with the Surface Book, but now that you can get them without Alcantara, I reaaaaally want one. It's just pointless for me. Ever since I got an iPad, I haven't really touched my MacBook much.

I just tried out the Surface 3 Laptop at Best Buy and while the Alcantara fiber was on fleek, the keyboard overall was atrocious. Thin chiclet-style keys a la Apple and the entire keyboard flexed whenever I hit a key in the middle.
The most nice, pleasant and informative tech reviewer on TH-cam.
I hope apart from build if Microsoft could put hardware as competitive as MacBook pro. I would love to see Surface Pro Book.

I am actually quite turned off by the small battery. If they had just gone for a 70+ Wh battery this would have been a killer laptop for an engineering student.
Next gen will blow this away. Zen2 with probably more cores at 15W.
No disassembly? Very strange, after they showed how "easy" it is to service it. Did MS instruct you not do encourage users to open their devices?
It's not really that easy. You have to peel off the plastic dots on the base and you find non standard screws. Changing the battery also looks like a hassle. You can see ifixit review if you're interested

Did you find any backlight bleeding on the lower part of the screen? I got a 15 inch with i7 Intel (enterprise ver.) 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, my screen has a noticeable bleeding in the lower part with 75%+ brightness. I've read on notebook check that is a common issue on this laptop. Also, the grey color is brushed aluminum or sleek like the black one? I fear the black coating will suffer from scratches over time

The reason why it does not have a thunderbolt 3 type c connector is because it is proprietary of intel and this laptop having AMD cpu means they will not have thunderbolt 3.
I think we will see thunderbolt 3 connector in AMD CPU's in future when it becomes USB 4 standard.
Shubham Pawar Intel released the tb3 protocol royalty free to everyone to improve adoption so amd laptops should have it next year, however, the business version of the surface laptop 3-15” has 10th gen intel but still no thunderbolt even though ice lake has built in tb3 controller. They don’t want to include thunderbolt because they want people to buy a surface dock.
