A good source for explanation of rowing a small sailboat with one oar can be found in The Compleat Cruiser by L. Francis Herreshoff. He introduces Mr. Weldon and the Rozinante in chapter 3. Weldon explains how to use a single oar for propelling the Rozinante. Standing up and facing forward with a long oar is the basic point.
Amazing how someone can take a lathe that is 125 years old & repurpose it with modern computer technology. This is all so inspirational, I hope once I'm retired I can build at least one wooden boat, not sure what method yet but looking at all kinds! I would love to be closer to the eastern sea board & to visit some of the boat building shops!! Thanks for sharing these videos.
The technique we always used to move the sailboat small distances without sailing is called "wrikken" in Dutch and uses a single oar. It seems to translate to "Stern sculling". It's a very useful technique and even quite energy efficient once you have gained some skill making figure-eights. It just requires a single rear oar lock and it can be offset from the rudder. On our boats it was just a round recess in the top of the transom. I did notice the handle of the oar was coated like the rest. If you leave that part uncoated or just oiled it will be much nicer in the hand. A laqucered surface can cause blisters with extended use. It's why I've treated all the wooden handles of my woodworking tools with linseed oil after sanding off the factory finish. From Wikipedia: "Stern sculling is the process of propelling a watercraft by moving a single, stern-mounted oar from side to side while changing the angle of the blade so as to generate forward thrust on both strokes. The technique is very old and its origin uncertain, though it is thought to have developed independently in different locations and times."
I cannot tell you how very much I have enjoyed your channel over the years. Every single video has always been fantastic. Every single one of them. And this one is certainly no exception. I don't need to tell you that making them out of ash was the correct decision. A solid oar is mandatory in a small boat. And the ancient hook was another brilliant idea. Or[sic], a dedicated oarlock for the same purpose. I’m a little surprised he didn’t fashion some sort of system, notch, rope and thole, or oarlock, so that the single oar could actually be utilized.🤔
I am currently shaving down the cedar handle for a boat hook, trying to get the handle weight down enough that the hook will stand vertically in the water if accidentally dropped, rather than lying flat on the water (I forget where I read about doing so). Given the diameter of your handle and the chosen wood (ash), I doubt you are close to a vertical float. I wonder if you considered this aspect in the design. Have a great launch.. Skylark is a beauty and I will look forward to watching the launch from afar.

I’m going to try to make it to Mystic by then. I had a hard time googling the launch site. Is the launch at the Mystic Shipyard West Yard or the Water Street Public Launch?
Wait, you should have a 10' oar and it should be made out of spruce or fir...and you're going to make a 7' oar out of heavy ash? I think you are going to regret this choice on 2 accounts. 1. It calls into question (in my mind) your seaman-smarts (that's pretty important as a TH-cam 'personality.') 2. "...not going to use the oars a lot..." Once you need to row, you will need to row more than a few strokes. The first time will be 'a lot.' I get it, nice 'craftsmanship.' But this is about more than cabinetry and wood-matching. C'mon.

I have dropped the hook in the lake. It does float vertical. The bronze hook easily sinks downward.

With only one oar, he is not going to be rowing, but rather paddling. Shaw & Tenney make oars out of Ash take the 'seaman-smarts' up with them.
