The Redesign That Saved Deathloop

  • Before Deathloop was released to critical acclaim, early playtesters found the game so incomprehensible that it required a redesign in order to save the game from utter disaster.
    Back in June 2020, the world saw gameplay from Deathloop for the very first time, revealing its slick gunplay, cool aesthetic, and an intriguing mystery to unravel. The video was met with roaring excitement.
    For fans, the chance to delve into a new world developed by Arkane Lyon was exciting. Internally, however, Deathloop wasn't garnering the same enthusiasm, with a lot of early playtesters not understanding what the game even was.
    Dana Nightingale, Deathloop's campaign director, tells the story of the redesign that saved the game from near disaster. Early user research had criticized the game for its obtuse and esoteric design, with some players confusing it for a different genre entirely. Much like the premise of the game, Dana had to approach the game's design from many different angles over and over again, until piecing together something coherent for early playtesters to understand only weeks before its official release date.
    This is the story of the redesign that saved Deathloop.

      Gatekeeping and staying true to design decisions made Elden Ring one of the highest-grossing games ever made. Making boiler-plate, run-of-the-mill games leads to a AAA industry that couldn't design its way out of paper bag, which is why something like Elden Ring was able to excel.

      @@NOF4C3 I consider myself a smart gamer whose been doing it for over 30 years. The issue isn't gatekeeping. It's not executing the design well enough for even "smart" people to get it. The video emphasizes multiple playtests forced Dana to realize she had to change something because nobody was understanding her original intent. That would be fine if she was a film director where intent is often up to interpretation, but not game design where intent is literally the game people will be playing for the next 10-20 hours. This is the definition of accessibility aka making it so more people can not only play the game, but understand what you're supposed to be doing in it.

    I think the hard part about the game design is the “holding onto information” part. You need a way to reference things you learned last week during that 30 minute session you had.

      For myself and many others it is simply a dumbed version of what Arkane excels at. The levels aren’t filled with the same level of options and creativity, the ai seems like it hasn’t been fully designed and it’s overall way too hand-holdy. Prey is their greatest game so far by a significant margin

    • @BAD7667
      @BAD7667 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OldMateJohn I do agree with you that Prey is their greatest game but what I don't get is why fans of Arkane's games would play the game with all of the handholding mechanics turned on in the first place. I've seen the same complaints from fans of their previous games and just like those games, Deathloop allows the player to turn off all of those things completely, and much like Dishonoured and Prey, the game is better without the help.
      I also believe when the player does turn off all of those directed options all the other aspects of the game people don't enjoy like the bad AI starts to make much more sense if the game was designed around being a puzzle game first like this video explains. Having strong or challenging AI would start to get very annoying when you are actually trying to solve the big puzzle and find clues after traveling to a location for the 50th time in a loop. It makes sense players would find the AI bad if they played it like a linear FPS game with some light problem-solving as combat becomes a much larger part of the game than was originally intended.
      I think fans of Arkane's previous games would think much more highly of Deathloop had they played the game with the hints and objective markers turned off. The game is a different experience when played like that and I think those people specifically would appreciate it a lot more, even though the game has fewer options for creativity.

    • @OldMateJohn
      @OldMateJohn ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BAD7667 I think with hand-holdy mechanics and more easier options and such its the more common way to play because the casual gamer is the more common one. So even within niche genres you're gonna have more people that are playing it casually. At least, thats how I've always viewed it.
      I tried giving the game another go with the objective markers turned off but it doesn't feel designed for it. Prey can easily be played by navigating with the signs around the environment and if you need to be put back on track you can open the journal. Deathloop doesn't really have the same visual cues or journal to put you in the right direction. You'd either be wandering around until you're in the right area, rely on the odd text on-screen (still has the issue of holding your hand) or know where to go beforehand.

      Prey was the furthest thing from "drop players into a world and let them do what they want". It very, very slowly expanded the player's world and their ability to move around and interact with it. Heck, the whole opening area was a manipulation-within-a-manipulation. The more vibrant artstyle and focus on characters and humour suggested that they were aiming for a broader audience than just the immersive sim crowd. However, Arkanes immersive sim roots are very noticeable in the open ended level design and the overall open ended structure of the game. The thing is that after playing the game I felt like it was extremely linear and the game was holding my hand the entire time and I had no time to think for myself. Especially the final day was frustrating because I was told EXACTLY what to do step by step. Also there’s only one way to break the loop so you can’t even do it your way

    Creative Director of Deathloop said he REFUSED to take any input from Prey Mooncrash (which was time loop based) he played one hour of it, realised it was a time loop game and UNISTALLED IT!!! (No-Clip Interview). He refused to play any time loop games or other game similar to his project until he completed his game, which is why the game felt so backwards compared to Prey Mooncrash and feelt un-evolved by both its linear gameplay, unchanging maps, and lack of enemy variation.
    When the games leading solution is to hand hold the character through the whole first act of an immersive simulation game, it coaches the player NOT to explore, teaches them to follow the markers. Its how a game about loops... ended up being linear and trivial to complete.

    • @FinalDisintegration
      @FinalDisintegration 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow. So the director refused to learn from other examples including from his own studio. This explains so much. It's also extremely familiar. It sounds just like what went wrong with Bioware and Anthem.

    As I listen to this, I completely understand the problem with the "give nothing, let the player figure it out" idea. Even if you don't give the player any real hints to the game's answer, you at least need to clearly tell them what the 'question' is.

  • @Calypso694

    If only the solution to the loop was ACTUALLY a puzzle and not just the illusion of one. You have Charlie’s games that are actual interesting puzzles that have depth and are difficult to solve right? If only the rest of the game was that.
    I have yet to play Mooncrash but I hear they should have just copied that piece for piece.

    I come from Subnautica and Outer Wilds, Deathloop is basically baby-sitting in comparison... The real issue is years of player conditioning to be in control, to feel powerful and a linear sense of growth in-game, which is enforced by publishers... Considering this, it is a good game, but very lacking because it tries the middle-ground instead of being "boringly conformist" or "failing spectacularly"...

    I have yet to understand what is it really going on, what the gameplay is supposed to be. There are some deaths that take you back a little bit, and other deaths that take you all the way back? And then I seem to, I guess, “finish“ a level but people are telling me you have to go through the timeline again and again until you figure things out? So then why do Levels say I completed them? And also the menu layout is extremely confusing I don’t know what anything is. There’s this purple stuff that I can’t access. It’s hard to follow what the characters are saying…

    this is the most unintentionally sad video I have ever seen. The game players expected and wanted from Deathloop existed and was killed by focus testers. Arkane games can't be focus tested because they are a niche product, they can't be comprehensible to a mainstream audience because they weren't designed for that audience. The person who plays an Arkane game is intelligent and more acclimated to that freedom and puzzle solving aspect, these aspects are problems for a focus tester. not the game's intended audience. So now if you wondered why Deathloop felt confused and dumbed down, here's your answer. Companies need to accept that not every game can make 10 billion million dollars, some games are niche and that's fine.
