    Yeah, the tutorial dungeon is notorious for breaking people.
    Here are some tips:
    1. The GoG Unity Version is heavily outdated, it's better to download and mod it manually
    2. Some classes cannot equip certain items because of their material, like leather for example
    3. You can ask people for quests in the dialog box. There is a big button that says work
    4. You will recieve a letter that lets you continue the main quest. It's actually quite interesting storywise
    5. You can create your own class by choosing the Custom class during character creation
    6. The skeletons aren't actually that tanky, you just had a low hit-chance, because of your skills and stats.
    Daggerfall is quite difficult at the beginning, but once you figure out how things work it's a lot of fun.
    Also probably a good thing that you played the DOS Version first incase you ever want to play Arena or Battlespire, because they have the same insane controls (Yes, I still have PTSD from my 36 hour Arena playthrough lol)

      This is so helpful thank you so much. A LOT of people have already warned me about BOTH the classic/GOG-cut versions; and to swap to unity before I get too far in my playthrough. I'll be looking up a tutorial for how to install it before this weekend :)
      And thank you for the answers! I'm going to print out the user manual and read through it. I try my best to ensure my experience can be somewhat similar to what it was back in 1996 (no online guides, exploits, etc.). Do mobs like the skeleton take more damage from certain weapons? I assumed the mace would do more than the sword; but it was worse.

    • @ultimateexergon
      @ultimateexergon 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +18

      @@FrostbreakYT Love your way of playing games :)
      Yes, maces (and blunt weapons in general) do more damage to skeletons, but your blunt weapon skill was probably lower than your longblade skill, which is why you didn't hit him. You can hear from the sound effects if an enemy parries or dodges.
      Oh and another recommendation: Read some of the ingame books. They are well written and the lore was quite different back then. Many cool things (like were-sharks) have sadly vanished since. (And of course don't forget that Queen Barenziah is the real Lusty Argonian Maid)

    • @anycoloryoudlike3049
      @anycoloryoudlike3049 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@FrostbreakYT I'm not sure on the type of weapon, but the material of the weapon can be really important. Some materials of weapons can't harm others. I made this mistake several times after selling certain weapons to get some money and then crying my way out of a dungeon because my sword couldn't harm an enemy. Another tip, don't try to explore the whole map like I tried to, the maps in Skyrim or Oblivion are easy to explore because of their small size, but Daggerfall's map size is about 624,000 square miles and similar in size to Great Britain, so fast travel is absolutely necessary to get around easily.

    • @KantiDono
      @KantiDono 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@loccapo Those aren't actually contradictory. The last mention in lore of the player character from Arena is "Uriel Septim claims that the hero will rule by his side" and the first mention in lore of Ocato is "Ocato became Imperial Battlemage to replace the treacherous Jagar Tharn". We don't know anything about Ocato's birth or background before he became the emperor's right hand man, so it's entirely possible they are one and the same.

    Daggerfall has a lore-accurate, non-condensed map size and scale, meaning the total area of the map is about 209331 square kilometres and has a population of about 750000. The travel time listed when you fast travel is the time it takes your character to walk to the selected destination.

    • @FrostbreakYT
      @FrostbreakYT  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +30

      Good lord. Is there stuff to do in between those spaces or is it just forest? If it's lore-accurate, I'd assume it's just mainly wilderness but the map looks pretty populated.

    • @davidsmith7752
      @davidsmith7752 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +32

      @FrostbreakYT you can get random encounters, but the game intends that you use Fast Travel to traverse the wilderness in pretty much all circumstances. Every location, no matter how minor, starts off flagged on the map, the main skill in traversal is time management, as most non-story quests are time sensitive, so you want to give yourself time to spare if you take one on. You can speed up travel considerably by buying a horse, which you just keep in mallet space or something when in dungeons or buildings, and if you buy a carriage you can empty your inventory of vendor trash items between dungeons, but both are expensive early on.

    13:28 Fun fact about Daggerfall's world size: It's approximately the size of Great Britain! Definitely a good reason to have that fast travel feature so you don't have to ACTUALLY do days worth of travelling.
    And yeah, as someone who's played both Arena and Daggerfall and beaten it, they're definitely...antiquated. Unity isn't perfect, but it's definitely better than playing the DOS version.
    Daggerfall has a lot of weird quirks. Your class decides what equipment you're able to use irrespective of skill. You might get a disease fighting monsters and, without a way to cure it, you might legit die before you can get to the nearest town for the cure. Still fun in it's own way, though!
    I don't know if you'd ever be interested in giving Arena a try, considering it's even older than Daggerfall, but if you ever decide to here's some advice:
    - There's a mod on the Nexus called "TES Arena Re-Remapped" that changes the controls to be more up to modern standards. It remaps the keys to something different, but holding CTRL reverts them to normal, which is perfect for writing your save.
    - Stock up on plenty of potions whenever you can. Always have at LEAST 3 Potions of Healing, 3 Potions of Cure Poison/Disease, 3 Potions of Free Action. You can get by with just the healing potions and the poison potions at first, but you're going to want to have plenty of these as the game progresses.
    - Also, I HIGHLY recommend making multiple saves for every step of the main quest. Even in 2024, the game can still glitch; better to have a save in case the main quest glitches and you get softlocked. In order:
    [Save for the start of one province's quest]
    [Save for the next step of the quest]
    [Save for when you're prepared, you're ready to delve a dungeon.]
    [Save for the start of the dungeon, just in case]
    [Dungeon Save 1]
    [Dungeon Save 2]
    [Dungeon Save 3]
    [Feel free to use this slot for anything]
    [Save for when you've completed a dungeon's goal and need to leave]
    [Leave Dungeon Save 2, alternate as you make each floor of the dungeon]
    Hope some of this helps! ^^

    Something to note is Daggerfall was released when games came with beefy manuals and yes - you were expected to read those front to back before starting the game. I highly recommend looking stuff up for this game as it's more complex than its follow ups. The main quest alone has like half a dozen plot threads being juggled that you can do in various orders and like 7 endings.
    Most of your questing will be done with the factions - there'll be a quest giver for each faction (I'd strongly recommend looking the quests up as they're randomly selected, don't care about your level or competently, have time limits, and WILL hurt your faction rep if you fail/abandon it).
    You can also find misc quests by talking to random bar patrons and store owners (not a guarantee), these are more random and you won't really know what you're gonna get. Oh, and nobles have their own batch of quests they can give out.
    Temple factions are exclusive to each other, with a Temple faction dedicated to each of the EIGHT Divines (Talos doesn't become a thing until after the events of Daggerfall). They have similar pools of quests & skill requirements but they give different benefits. I'd highly recommend looking them up instead of picking one at random.
    Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood are all here as expected. For Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, you need to steal/kill successfully and they'll contact you for a job - if you fail that job (by not doing it in time), you will be locked out of those factions. Same goes for if you become a Vampire while you're a member (since you technically died and thus aren't a member anymore).
    Archeologists' Guild is a fan faction modded into the game, mostly as a means to provide a non-magic player with some gameplay options they'd normally be locked out of.
    As for Vampirism and Lycanthropy, yes, you can be either one of them. For Lycanthropes, you can either become a Werewolf or a Wereboar. For Vampires - there's I think 11? Vampire Clans in the game, though they don't really function as proper factions in vanilla (some cut content there). Oh! Witch Covens are also factions in the game which can offer quests, summon the Daedric Princes, etc - but you can't join them.

    Manuals are important when playing old games. Controls weren’t as set in stone, neither were game mechanics. And tutorials weren’t as detailed because it was assumed you read the manual. That’s not to say that reading the manual will make the game not dated, but it would make it less frustrating.
    Haven’t played dagger-fall much, but that was my experience with Arena, which is the game before dagger-fall. Made the game much more enjoyable (still not enough to bother beating it though, it seemed like it got repetitive after finding the first piece of the staff).
    Also, 8:27 if I had to guess it’s because your an argonian. It’s the same in Morrowind. Beast races can’t wear footwear or helmets.

    Games back then not only REQUIRED you to READ the manuals, but also REQUIRED the manuals or other things included in the game box for the copy protection schemes. And there was no in-game map. You wanted to map things, you would sit there with paper and DRAW the map. I actually miss those days. So many game devs got REALLY creative with their manuals and, stuff included in the game boxes. They REALLY immersed you in that world. Some of those manuals were like novels that you had to read that really taught you the full history, and lore, of the lands you were about to explore. Heck... Many of the Ultima games came with literal cloth maps that you used to navigate around the world with. Those manuals would be the entire history of the world. They would tell you about all the major characters involved in the story, give you essential clues that you needed for a lot of puzzles, foreshadowed events, gave you a full run-down of the mechanics, skills, spells, weapon stats, etc... They REALLY DID immerse you in the world and gave you quite a meta-game in addition to what was going on in the computer. The younger generation has no clue about any of this and the last thing they would even THINK to look at when playing these old computer RPG's would be a manual, let alone a manual that could be a hundred pages long. And how many of them would think to just pull out some graph paper and physically draw out the maps instead of just fumbling around getting lost?

    Daggerfall has what is, on balance, probably the best story of an Elder Scrolls game, and some fun roleplay options and mechanics...IF you can get out of the first dungeon, which may be the worst introduction to a game I've ever seen. This was also from the "read the manual and figure everything else out yourself" era of game design, which makes it extremely daunting when the game is this sprawling and ambitious. The task of meeting the game where it's at falls entirely on the player.
    The map is procedurally generated (though every copy of the game comes with the same seed, so everything is always in the same place). This means it can be much larger than later games in the series - even the tiny island of Betony is larger than the entire Skyrim map. There's no reason to do anything but fast travel between marked points on the map, though - everything in between is all pixelated procgen filler.
    I'd recommend looking up a first-time players' guide on TH-cam if you want to keep at it. It can be rewarding, but there's a reason Morrowind still gets played and the first two Elder Scrolls games mostly don't.

    If you dive deeper into the game you will find that it is very rich in various features to discover. Here are just a few:
    * There are 2 kinds of lycanthropy - you can either become werewolf or wereboar, and the second one looks damn cool
    * You can get the daedric quest by literally performing summoning ritual for a specific daedric prince and each of them can be summonned only at ONE SPECIFIC DAY OF THE YEAR
    * This is the only TES game where you can buy your own ship
    * Unlike other TES games there are many different endings for the main quest, literally non-linear. And that is where those "dragon break" term comes from as they did not pick and specific ending to be a canon for later events
    * There is such a type of item as "painting". Unlike Oblivion where paintings are decorations only in this game you can keep them in inventory and open to look the detailed picture
    * There is a variable reputation system in which you can have different respect among criminals, nobles, commoners and specific factions
    * You may not see the effects of a magical item and to reveal them you have to visit mages guild and pay for "magic item identification" service
    * Among the number of skills your character can have you will find that the game actually has many languages to learn, there are orcish, daedric, impish, giantish, nymph, harpy, centaurian, spriggan and dragonish; they help to talk with creatures instead of fighting them
    * Class maker allows you to pick phobia of specific kinds of creatures; restrictions to wear equipment of specific materials like mythril or ebony or specific types like chain or plate (guess that's what we see in the video and what confused the author); have advantages depending on day/night or being in water
    * You can be a levitating werewolf riding on a horse all at once

    In terms of character customisation Morrowind was already a step down. And all the subsequent titles are only half the rpgs that daggerfall was at best.
    If you want an optimal character, make somebody who is capable of using magic. Mark and recall will be your bestest of friends in this game.
    And consider making your own class that has an immunity to diseases. Resting inside of dungeons can give you lethal ones. I bricked 4 playthroughs by getting the plague.

    People also made it a authentic immersion :as an outsider (even more so as another race) expect to be treated like trash by the citizen until you've proven yourself

    I love Daggerfall, but honestly I cannot play the older Elder Scrolls games without first watching a short guide on TH-cam first, just to understand how to properly build a character and navigate the world. The mods for the Unity version are also amazing and I almost never play Daggerfall anymore without first making my own mod list.

    Funny how he says "Where it all started" when it's actually the second game.

    Nothing like a Frostbreak video to make my day better!
    Btw, you kept asking how big things are during the video. Answering your question, the map of the game is around little more than 77% of the size of Great britain. How? procedural generation, of course ;D

      Thanks Rapha :) wait, how can it be procedurally generated if each game uses the same map? Are some things different for certain people like city locations?

      @@FrostbreakYT If you use the same seed for the procedural generation you get the same map.
      Really enjoyed your taster of Daggerfall, brings back lots of memories of playing games in the 90s, pre-WASD :D :D personally I think you should stick with the original version for the real taste of what we saw as excellent back then.

      I would love to stick to the original; but it also crashed a few times and wasn't super compatible with my monitor/resolution. I think I'm going to try and get unity and make it as close as I can to vanillia; much like what OpenMW does for Morrowind.

    I’ve been playing through Arena, which is way more rough than daggerfall IMO, but I’ve been loving it. People back in the day had to read the manual in order to figure out how to play as it is a very complicated game compared to Skyrim and they didn’t really have much in the way of tutorials back then.
    I would recommend downloading the manual and giving it a read or watching some guide videos

      How do you play it? I'd be down giving Arena/Redguard a try but they're hard to find online I think. Redguard specifically.

      @ Arena is free on steam and GOG, but I have a disc version that came in the elder scrolls anthology, which has disc copies of all 5 elder scrolls games. I have no idea about redguard, but I’m sure it’s available to emulate somewhere

    Unity edition will make it more bearable. My advice to you is make your starter character a Redguard warrior. You can melee through most things early on and you get resistence to disease and are good with any weapon. Make sure to join the Fighter's Guild as soon as possible. Then choose wizard as your next character (join the mages guild as soon as possible) and rogue 3rd (find the hidden thieves and assassin's guild and join ASAP).
    The game has guidebooks made about it so download them to absorb as much as possible. Keep in mind when this game came out nobody else was making games this large so you were at the bleeding edge of open world RPG. Games like Ultima was the inspiration for games like this. IE big world to explore, no real knowledge of what to do until you asked people and gathered information yourself, and lots of dungeons. (so much content that it feels like you could play them forever and not see everything) It was the nerd's dream pen and paper CRPG game were it not for the countless bugs. (which later got patched)
    This is the game that got Bethesda the reputation as the leaders of the open world RPG from a first person view. It's a piece of history which shows how ambitious these guys were. I remember reading about them in Edge magazine. Starfield is the return to form that goes back to the format of Daggerfall. (huge amount of empty space with towns scattered in places where only life would support it. The opposite of the modern Elder Scrolls games where you just bump into towns by accident because everything is squished so close together)

    Daggerfall has a 97 page manual that you really have to read to fully understand this game. That was par for the course for most computer RPG's back then. There's a LOT of mechanics and story stuff in there that you need to know. It's near impossible to just, "Jump into Daggerfall" and know what you're doing or what's going on in the world without reading that manual.

    1:55 That is Chancellor Ocato. Yep. That's him. Nevermind the chin beard, the lack of elf ears, and bald head. Uriel VII in the previous game had a full beard and head of hair, but went bald by this time. He did manage to grow back his hair after this game. Maybe Ocato figured it out and told him how to do it.

    Fun fact: That small island to the south west of the red-blinking territory you're on at 13:08 when looking at the map screen? That one between the mainland and the sea serpent on the map. That small island in Daggerfall is the same size as all of Skyrim's game world. Everything you can do in TES V: Skyrim fits on that tiny island.
