Disney owns the film rights however and I heard that Salten, the same year the film was released, reluctantly sold the rights to the character’s name desperately needing money due to having been exiled in Switzerland with Nazis annexing his home of Austria. In where others can’t use rights to the brand name.

I remember reading the book when I was in 7th grade, and I honestly don't remember a lot from it since it was nearly 6 years ago but I remember being astounded at how dark the tone was in comparison to the movie. It's a gritty, realistic take on life and death in nature and it's definitely not suitable at all for young children. Now that Bambi is in the public domain, it'll be interesting to see if there's any more faithful adaptations that come out.
If the public domain status of the novel means what I think it means, then yes I agree with you. I hope to see more accurate adaptations of the novel in the future. Good ones. Although there is the possibility of Disney's lawyers getting involved.
Disney does own the trademark to Bambi last I heard. Given what is happening with Zorro and Tarzan (two more examples of trademarked yet public domain entities), it is hard but doable. The Zorro trademark has been invalidated in Europe, for one. Disney are pretty litigious, anyway.

8 deaths? ...huh. Going from what I've heard of this story, I expected it to have as big of a body count as Countdown. Then again, most of the characters that get killed off aren't background fodder.
There's a story about how Walt Disney originally wanted to show some dead humans after the forest fire scene, showing that the fire the hunters themselves had carelessly caused had caught them, but he was talked out of the idea by an animator who asked "How do you want them? Medium or well done?"
That would have been a great way to have the movie really end on on a dark note. Just have all the animals roast the humans on a barbecue and iris out on that :-P

What a great review Jamie, thanks for doing a review on my favorite book and cartoon, simply timeless and indescribable. So many people do not know about the book, and the sequel Bambi's Children. Also, everyone gets so stressed about Bambi's mother getting shot, I think parents worry about it more than it affects the children lol. It was sad yes, but somehow it never bothered me extremely, things like that aren't a super big deal at that ages. I saw a funny comment under the cartoon "3 Little Pigs", in the cartoon there was a picture on the wall of some link sausage with "Father" written under it ..... someone commented "that's dark".......... lol, well in a way yes, but in another way it's just a funny joke, I mean lighten up, it's a cartoon lol! Great Review! One thing you could have pointed out is the changes that come with the Disney movie being set in America. Since it is actually a big plotpoint in the book (the original german that is) that there are two different species of deer in the forest. Bambi belongs to the much smaller one and he and his kind are quite afraid of the big deers. In fact the illustrations in the book you have look just like these "big deer" (Rothirsch in the original book in your book probably "Elk") whereas the original Bambi is a Roe deer and supposed to look like this: bilder.t-online.de/b/70/43/71/10/id_70437110/610/tid_da/nur-maennliche-rehe-boecke-genannt-tragen-ein-geweih.jpg

The trickiest part of a movie company doing a movie closer to the Bambi book is that Disney owns the brand name of Bambi. Then again there are other book adaptations that had been by Disney, but other companies have also done their versions of those adaptations as well. I wonder how they managed to handle that.
Master Chief58 we'll see about that. Remember we also have another Jungle Book movie coming out later this year from Warner Brothers that's nothing like the Disney version.
Jaimetud, well I heard Disney ended up owning the rights to the Bambi name the same year the film was released with Felix Salten living in exile in Switzerland due to Nazis annexing his home in Austria and was in desperate need of money. This video explains this: th-cam.com/video/PauK8qIjbX4/w-d-xo.html
Oh i notice something with the diffrences of both book and film Bambi in the orginal book was a roe deer a deer mostly knowen in austria however in the movie hes a white tailed deer and the reason for the change is because white tailed deer are more well knowen to north american audince
How “non-human” does a victim of the “Bambi Effect” perception have to be? Because I get this around a human-looking character for sure. Edit: Just a few days ago (November 3rd, 2022), I was “Bambi Effected” by a human character in a film I watched. Oddly enough, that film also had a deer in it.
i love this review a lot. i love hearing the differences between Disney's Bambi and the novel. It was a fascinating review and i also like Bambi 2 better than the original Bambi. Excellent review Jaimetud.
The things that I heard about this book and its sequel "Bambi's Children," are very messed. Animals dying in very, gruesome ways (including fawns, edit: I was wrong), a hunter being killed by another human, an excessive body count, and cousin to cousin incest (though no one points out how wrong and messed up that is, which makes me question whether or not that's a normal thing with deer, though, given that it happens again in the sequel, that's a possibility). The sequel is apparently worse, with even gorier deaths and a mating scene.
Hey! Loved your video. I like how you went into depth with it and found some parts funny! Just wondering where you got the book that was illustrated by Michael J. Woods and that exact book cover. Could you send a link of it? Would be much appreciated. Thank you
@@Jaimetud Oh why thank you so much for your quick response and answer! I'm actually watching your Guardians of Ga'Hoole review since I remember reading the books and loving the movie.
@@Jaimetud Have you perhaps done a review about Watership Down yet? That's my favorite book and I can't stand the newer adaptation from Netflix/BBC. Please let me know if you do. I would like to find it
I hate the idea of humans being portrayed as gods, personally. Also, I loved the sequel too. Maybe not more than the original - I actually quite like when a movie set in a place as beautiful as the forest in Bambi takes its time to appreciate the scenery and whatnot - but I did like it just as much, but for different reasons; the reasons that you stated. See, I don't think the themes were quite as stand out, and I feel like some of the scenes looked a bit more interesting in the original, but not by much, which in turn was balanced out by the second movies improvement on the interactions and relationships among the characters. I don't think I would have liked the novel - generally I hate stories that are as unsatisfying as what you spoke of. Only times when I was alright with this amount of depressing stuff were Watership Down, Chase the Wind, Kaspar: Prince of Cats, and Dawn Flight. Books like The Dancing Bear, Born to Run and many other sob stories did nothing more than made me wish I'd never picked up the book. I feel like stories should have a balance, probably because when I'm down the last thing I want is to read a story that is just depression on a page.
There had been cases though of English translations toning down the books for children and Felix Salten expressed annoyance over this. Who knows what he thought about the film.
Disney is now confirmed to do a live action remake..... they better use the 1923 plot source material from the book.. I love the movie.. but the book is very strong and dark
The book is mouldy trash, and there is good reason it's hard to find it. The Disney movie is both a masterpiece and a glorious insult to the book and its writer. And the sequel is cute and pointless. I didn't think I would like Bambi 2 but the artwork keeps up with the original and I liked the father and son moments. The original is still...historic. It's pure art and perfection from start to finish.
@@Jaimetud You know how people say Bambi doesn't have a plot and it's a bunch of fluff, but that's not really the case and only true on a surface level? Wellllllllll Bambi's children... really is a plotless book of fluff, without depth under the surface. Felix had something meaningful to say in each chapter of Bambi, but in Bambi's Children the things just happen with no apparent meaning. Oh, and Bambi turns into a Gary Stu, spouting moralizing speeches that sound like it came from the author's mouth and not the character we know, and he turns back on the theme of ending up alone by having Bambi and Faline living happily with their kids until they grow up. And humans are no longer "Him" and we get scenes from their perspective, and there's a game warden, and some snotty 13 year old on his first hunting trip that gets rammed by Bambi (probably even killed?!??!?!) and the forest animals chant about how great he is for steamrolling a human kid. And Bambi's daughter gets stuck on a farm like Gobo and there's this tied up owl character, but they get her out... somehow... and there's some side plot with a wolf getting let loose in the woods, but so much of the book is forgettable that I don't remember how that got resolved. And the "third hand" is called the "thunderstick," removing another element of mystery from the original. And... they have a feud with some other deer family... or something. It's much ado about nothing.
@@Jaimetud It's the literary equivalent of a troll in central park. Bambi's children and Harry Potter and the cursed child are the worst books (oops, I mean 1 book and one script for a play) for the same reason: they attempt to extend a story that was finished and shit on their predecessor while doing it.
I disagree. I own and read both Bambi and Bambi's Children, and both are great books in their own right. The English translation of Bambi's Children is both thought-provoking and witty.
Oh i notice something with the diffrences of both book and film
Bambi in the orginal book was a roe deer a deer mostly knowen in austria however in the movie hes a white tailed deer and the reason for the change is because white tailed deer are more well knowen to north american audince
There was also a Soviet Russian version of Winnie the Pooh.
It is a cartoon where the characters supposedly sprout collectivist propaganda.
Never saw Bambi 2
For years I thought Flower was a girl....
Bambi, animal Game of Thrones
thank to you i have read the both and it great
maybe the old stag is bambi's grandfather
The things that I heard about this book and its sequel "Bambi's Children," are very messed. Animals dying in very, gruesome ways (including fawns, edit: I was wrong), a hunter being killed by another human, an excessive body count, and cousin to cousin incest (though no one points out how wrong and messed up that is, which makes me question whether or not that's a normal thing with deer, though, given that it happens again in the sequel, that's a possibility). The sequel is apparently worse, with even gorier deaths and a mating scene.
*ArE yOu SuRe YoUr ReAdY tO mAtE???* also I only have the 1st book because of that.
Do you have a link for the book
Try your local library
Hey! Loved your video. I like how you went into depth with it and found some parts funny!
Just wondering where you got the book that was illustrated by Michael J. Woods and that exact book cover. Could you send a link of it? Would be much appreciated. Thank you
I got it from my local library. Both of them.
I would like to find it
@@kittycatwild9283 fifty bucks on my patreon and I will gladly do that. It's a classic.
@@Jaimetud I would if I could! Can't though, I'm broke atm. Hope you come around to it eventually!
What's the musical piece at the end that was a teaser for war of the worlds?
That's the opening to Jeff Wayne's war of the worlds
@@Jaimetud thank you! Have a wonderful day!
Faline had little screen time in the first film even as a fawn.
Please do vampires assistant and eragon
Why do you remind me of Matt Damon with a Custer goatee?

_Do you Remember the way...to the great valley?_
Land before time was more interesting then Bambi
Also, the original book was for adults.
There had been cases though of English translations toning down the books for children and Felix Salten expressed annoyance over this. Who knows what he thought about the film.

What's a "metro character" anyone?
Metrosexual: a person who behaves stereotypically gay or lesbian but is actually straight.
Oh. Thank you
The more I know. XD

You can't be serious... Even Bambi isn't an original Disney story?!
I know this comment is old as fuck but...
Disney's first "original" story was The Lion King. If that.
@@KidaMilo89
Lady and the Tramp was a composite of two stories, at least.
Disney is now confirmed to do a live action remake..... they better use the 1923 plot source material from the book..
I love the movie.. but the book is very strong and dark
28:40 I Fully Agree !
Lotta folks seem to agree with me on this over the years. Maybe I should do it ;-)
8:58 i guess you could have called him sexually curious. a romantic on all sides till his "scale" was set in place.
24:40-24:50 >D Just so funny.
Thumper dies in the book
Hahaha this was great
woa
The book is mouldy trash, and there is good reason it's hard to find it. The Disney movie is both a masterpiece and a glorious insult to the book and its writer. And the sequel is cute and pointless. I didn't think I would like Bambi 2 but the artwork keeps up with the original and I liked the father and son moments. The original is still...historic. It's pure art and perfection from start to finish.
I read Bambi's children. It's a pile of crap.
How bad are we talking?
@@VikingBoyBilly Sounds like the Disney comic adaptation of "Bambi's Children" wins over that....
It was somewhat rewritten during the translation, it was released first, before the German original, due to Felix Salten being in exile at the time. I actually found the German translation and translated it in Google Translate, and it reads a bit differently. Quite interesting doing that, getting the author's original words and sending it through a crude but direct translation - gauranteed no abridgements - intriguing! As for the comic book adaption, it is nearly as good as the original book, with much taken word-for-word, and the pictures are very nice. I have all these books and translations on my HDD if anyone is interested in seeing what I mean. Cheers!~ Bellarmine
