my grandfather still tells me stories about his innings in the ovel and his 200 in england. my grandpa is a quiet and sobar man, but mention gavaskar to him and his eyes lit up with such joy and happiness . i don't think there is anything more i can say. i never saw him bat, i never was a part of the india he represented. but all anyone from my generation need to do to verify his legend is to talk to their grandparents.

In the modern era when conditions varied over the world and bowlers had developed the skills to exploit them, Sunny G is the greatest. Smith and Haydos come close, but Sunny's record shines all the more considering his team's strength. If you are talking pre world war, I would'n go into that debate as the game was very different, but statistically there were a few better openers than Gavaskar. Looking deeper down, most new teams were finding their feet in tests so I don't know how to compare them. You can decide for yourself.

Feel unlucky to not to have witness Gavaskar at his prime.
But when I hear him giving cricketing insights and analysis during his commentary stint, I can sense how legendary a player he was.

Sunil gavaskar has scored 10000+ runs without helmet and above avg of 50 that too against deadly bowlers of west indies ,australia and england .
His average would be above 70 if he will play today

Would rate the bowlers Sachin played against ( Akram, Waqar, Warne, McGrath, Ambrose, Walsh, Murali, Donald, Pollock, Saqlain ), higher than the array of bowlers that Gavaskar faced ( The West Indies quicks, Imran Khan, Sarfraz Nawaz, Willis, Hadlee, Botham ).
So, Sachin > Gavskar >> Kohli.

We've had Sachins and Dravids and other middle order greats. But openers in foreign conditions? No one. None. Other than Sunny G. Sehwag has 23 100s, but most of them at home. Next best is Vijay, with half as tons as Sehwag, though he did get a few memorable ones away. So Sunny G was the greatest opener, and probably the best batsman India ever produced, as he opened the batting which generally is a thankless job to do as you get nicked off so often away from home. People might say Sachin and yeah that is debatable, but Sunny G was singularly responsible for making indian cricket known to the world. I have no doubt that India needed him more than Tendulkar, which is in no way intended to demean Sachin. Sachin was inspired by Sunny, just like today's generation is from him.
I loved when I saw a guy write this, and I feel there can be no better testament to the respect and gratitude Indian cricket has for Gavaskar than this comment:
Some young blokes say, "I want to be Sachin." Some say, "I want to be Kohli" . Some say Ganguly, Sehwag and so on.
But I can't imagine how good a player will become in the future, if he says today, "I want to be Sunil Gavaskar."

@@anreddy9 There is no debate about this in my mind. Sunny G was the best batsman India ever produced. Name another opener who hit 15+ 100s for India. Sehwag did, but a majority came in the subcontinent. India have only produced one all conditions world class opener, and that was Sunny G. You don't need rocket science to know what 10000+ runs with 50+ avg as opener means. The best opener in world cricket post WW2, without a doubt. Smith and Haydos follow, a fair distance behind, considering the teams they were part of.
