- Sunil Gavaskar got hit on the head once during his career, while facing Malcolm Marshall at Georgetown in 1983. By www.cricketcoun...
Ravi Shastri recalls that moment in this video. He says, "Gavaskar was batting on 49 when a Malcolm Marshall bouncer him smack on the forehead and bounced 10-15 meters in front of him. But Gavaskar was unruffled; he didn't flinch. But the next ball was driven firmly past Marshall for a boundary to get his half-century."

Love him or hate him, got to admit Shastri is a great story-teller. The way he vividly brought to life that situation of the match; I have goosebumps !
Brother see the old videos of west indies there bowling line was rather a lot scary rather impossible to face.
Absolutely right 😊
You stole my comment, but very well summed up buddy 👍
save ur comment till you crosscheck story from sunny.
Why hate him? Absolutely love ,all cricketers. Wonderful professional in whatever he took up.
Situation very well narrated by Ravi Shastri; Gavaskar carried the burden of his team's batting on his little shoulder most of the times; faced the toughest and roughest fast bowlers of his era with guts and determination. Never ran away from opening the innings, as has been seen in post Gavaskar's era. His contribution to Indian cricket is immense and can't be undermined, even if he is called "Mr Gavaskar" by someone junior to him ( against the normal practice of addressing him and Sunny Bhai)
say what you like guys - the fact remains that Gavaskar will remain the FIRST Batsmen to score 10,000 runs in Test Cricket and that speaks for itself....
@@jamesmccaul2945 how can someone else be first???
@@jamesmccaul2945 Bro Don Bradman held record for highest centuries 29 for long time. Gavasker was the guy who broke Bradman's record after long time.
@@jamesmccaul2945Gavaskar is already FIRST!! How can anyone else be first again???? Think before writing / posting. And think straight!!!!
Gavaskar had 14 test centuries against West Indies, when they had the most feared bowling attack of all time. Best batsman of his era.
13 test centuries
Correct 13 Test Centuries
13 centities against WI during those times marshall, holding, bishop, garner etc.
And he batted without helmet :)
He is not only the best batsman of his era. He is one of the finest of all time. Personally I consider him one of the top 3 of all time.
Sir Garry Sobers named him the best batsman he has ever seen!
I grew up w Sunny as my idol. His record against the WI at their peak 13 centuries in 27 tests at an avg of 65. I don't think there is another batsman to compare to that in history. We will never know if Don could have done better or not. Sachin is also terrific b/c he did so well against Aus at their peak and other teams, plus his ODI record and his bowling. But as a sheer opening test batsman, Sunny will still be the best all time.
I just hope the new generation of Indian cricketers would learn something from him as well. It seems all they are focused on is the IPL. What a shame!
And OPENING the innings without a helmet...new ball with unknown pitch and conditions
He was best because in his era windies have abundant fearsome bowlers 😢
In my opinion Gavasker is the greatest Indian batsman ever. I grew up watching him and he scored runs against the best bowling attack in the history of cricket.
+Harj Ghuman Not just your opinion, bhaiya, even the Master Blaster Sir Vivian Richards says Sunny was the best batsman he ever saw.
+Harj Ghuman You might not know this, but Sir Len Hutton was an admirer of Sunny's batting, and said that had Sunny been white, he would have been compared to Bradman. BTW, Sunny scored 20 centuries in his first 50 Tests, second only to Bradman.
+tryarunm I think he was better than Bradman. Bradman never had to face the West Indies pace battery.
No doubt about that, exceptional.
@@ghumanharj nonsense
For almost a decade, it was like the test match is ended once Gavaskar got out ! That was his charismatic impression on cricket lovers. Undoubtedly Gavaskar showed batting prowess to the world, followed by Kapil dev, another legend introduced pace attack to the world. These 2 legendary cricketers can't be replaced for ever...
Once Gavaskar got out, the funeral procession would start. Remember 1974 Summer of 42 in England? Then India would open the bowling with spinners which is hilarious coming to think of it. This is back when there were no TVs; had to listen to commentary on noisy AM radio stations.
What R. S. omitted was that when Sunny hit that 4 with such force that it had reached the boundary before MM had finished his rundown the pitch. Oh yes I've always maintained that Sunia was the best and will always be to our gen.
Sunil & I were in same school.. Same class .Our school was St Xavier's school...He was a prodigy..
When we were in 6 or 7 th Std..There was a match between Teachers & Students ..
He went to bat ..Bowler was Father Fritz ..a school coach ..
He pointed out to Father that he would hit him for Six at long On ..
,& Lo on the 3 or 4 th ball he hit exactly where he had pointed out ..
I think he as the only player who went in Test match without playing Ranji Trophy ..
This is why gavaskar was best test batsmen😊 because he scored on most bowlers friendly pitches and against most fearsome bowlers world cricket has ever seen. Probably sachin and Lara played on more batting friendly pitches during his era, though still both were also all-time greats undoubtedly. But undoubtedly sunil gavaskar was all time best test batsmen😊👌💐
Sunny is the Godfather of Indian bating .... and many greatest player also agreed with that.
Correctly said
The reason I fell in love with cricket just one actually...Sunil Manohar Gavaskar!
Absolutely
Sunny Gavaskar is Best among all the Batsman till date..no one could match his quality..
I still feel Gavaskar is the greatest Batsman India Produced
Ajit Dubey I agree with you 100% fearless n stylist. Once he gets through 10 overs. Then definitely runs are there from him. On other side Chetan Chauhan was his Support. In those days if Gavasker misses 100 then definitely Gudanppa has his 100. Sandip Patil was another hard hitting future for India but he ruined it by getting in bollywood.
100% agree - the best of the best
No doubt about that
He is the best.....alll time favorate....who scored against .... deadliest bowling of West indies.....best bowling attack ever😁
I don't thing Gavaskar is the greatest batsman of India...in my opinion he is the greatest batsman the world has produced. All other batting greats like Bradman, Chappel, Ponting, Richards, Lara etc had top quality fast bowlers in their own team, while India had none during those times (Kapil Dev came much later). Which means Gavaskar had to face ALL the top fast bowlers of that time while the other batsmen would never face their own fast bowlers. Also they were used to batting on the fast pitches of theirs while Gavaskar's upbringing was on the slow pitches of India. So his batting had a much higher degree of difficulty and inspite of that he became the highest run getter with the highest test centuries of his time, so if you do a proper like to like comparison he comes out as the best batsman of all time...at the most you can include Bradman along with him at the top but no one else.
Sunny Gavaskar was the greatest Indian opening batsman of his era and till date. He faced the best fast bowling of his era without a helmet and that needs character, guts, technique and class. And Ravi Shastri is one of the best cricket commentators India and the world ever had till date.
Gavaskar the toughest opener a picture of concentration and confidence in sushil doshi voice during 70to80era.. We used to listen now we are watching on u tube
Sunny is da man! Both Sunny & Marshall are bona fide GREATS!!
Sunil Manohar Gavaskar is "THE" GREATEST OPENER. There is no doubt about that.
Sunny Gavaskar, greatest Test batsman of all time. Sorry, no Sachin, no Lara, no Ponting, no Richards or a Bradman. To face the WI pace battery in those days upfront without a head-protection, no restriction on # of bouncers, pacy wickets in those days....he is right up there..far ahead of the rest.
Bingo you have rightly said.
So true
Agree
Your right to have an opinion is as of now revoked.
Please avoid having children and do not drive a motor vehicle.
Well Said and truly he was the best
Sunny played well at Georgetown but the real highlight of the series was Jimmy "my name is courage" Amarnath. The 90 odd he scored at Bridgetown was one of the best the WI had ever seen. That included a few consecutive sixes of Holdiing at his best. For that period between 82-84, he was indisputably the best player of fast bowling. Unfortunately, did not last but while it lasted, it was a treat..
+GeorgetheArchitect Jimmy, in the latter half of his career, was rated by Sunny and Imran Khan as having the best defence of all Test batsmen.
+tryarunm I agree. Not sure Sunny would say that, you certainly won't hear that from Shastri.. I know Imran had a high regard for Jimmy and has often said so..
Gavaskar was a great opening batsman but he fared miserably in that 1983 series. He scored 20, 0, 1 & 32 in the first two tests. That 147 n.o. was scored on the last day of that drawn third Test match on a slow Guyana wicket when there was no result possible in that rain ruined match. He promptly failed in the next two tests at Barbados and Antigua (2, 19, 18 & 1). Jimmy Amarnath was the hero of that series and the one before that in Pakistan. He was the one who displayed tons of courage and in fact, after getting hit by a bouncer at Barbados hooked the first ball after resuming his innings for a six! It is another matter altogether that Amarnath suddenly lost his touch and scored just one run in six innings against the very same Windies on their tour of india later that year! Shastri gets it all wrong when he says there were seniors in that West Indies team "like Lloyds (sic) when compared to Richards, Greenidge etc". Lloyd was the only senior guy (he debuted in 1966) and Roberts, Richards, Greenidge, Gomes and Holding all made their debuts around the same time (1974-75 and 1975-76).
I always hated two bastards, Amarnath and Prabhakar. But Courtney Walsh settled the score!
GeorgetheArchitect I
Sunny taught us a simple life-lesson of how to hold together in the middle of an adversity.
Sunny was an all-time treat to watch when he bats, fields or does commentary
In my books the finest Indian batsman , ever . He played all rhe great bowlers of his time with aplomb and was one Indian batsman best equipped to play the moving ball ,the rising ball coming at his plexus ,the spinning ball turning away 90 degrees after pitching . Always aware of where his off stump stood .
You Said It Correctly!
Sunny is/was/will remain the best Indian batsman ever for sure!
He was a master. I rate him on top of breadman, bcoz breadman played most of his matches against england only. But gavaskar played against the best fast bowlers of the world.
You said Bread Man... can't stop laughing
Courage thy name is Gavaskar. if he had played cricket today he would surely have averaged more than 60.
I do not know of this incident which Shastri said. But i will tell you an incident which i had seen during 1983 WI tour of India. In that test match Malcom Marshall was bowling at his dangerous pace. Gavasker's bat flew from his hands and fell somewhere near short leg while playing him .Gavasker was out for 0 and 7 runs ,both the inning out to Marshal.Everyone thought Gavasker is at the end of his career and his reflexes are not as good as before. In the next test,i saw Gavasker batting like V. Richards smashing all the WI bowlers with disdain,in the process ,he made his fastest test century 121 in 128 balls..For days i could not beleive what i saw that day.Can Gavasker play such hurricane innings in a test match against the battery of WI fast bowlers(Marshal,Holding,Winston Davis,Daiel). Then it struck me Gavasker had a point to prove against them. This was indeed bravne act for us to remember. This incident was similar to G.sobers smashing double century against D.Lilee and company when Aus played against World X1,when Sobers was out for a duck facing Lilee bouncer in the previous test.
I too watched the full series on TV, and very clearly remember the Delhi test match where he scored the 29 test hundred to equal Sir Don Bradman's record. In the first test match Marshall was at his best, think the test match was at Kanpur, and in the first innings only Dilip Vengsarkar could play the fiery west indies pace battery, he scored 59, if I am not wrong and was the highest scorer. The last test match was in Chennai where Gavaskar again scored a double century and was not out on 236. In that sweltering Chennai (Madras) summer heat, gavaskar a long innings, he was very tired at the end if it. That series will always be remembered for West Indian team's all-round performance, they had the best, fastest and fiercest bowling attacks and also the best batting attacks in the world. Very fortunate to have seen the complete series.
It was at Bangalore.
in that series, no test match was played in Bangalore. The first test was at Kanpur, next at Delhi, then Ahmedabad (new test venue), Calcutta and Madras., the final test match.
That hundred was at Delhi. He equalled Bradman's long standing record of 29 test centuries with this superb knock.
That series was after 1983 world cup victory... West Indies toured India & extracted sweet revenge by defeating India 3-0 in a five test match series & white washed India 5-0 in one day series... I remember every single match of that series. Some very fond memories of that series are etched in my mind. Like after being 8 wickets down for 90, at Kanpur , stupendous partnership between Binny & Madan Lal, wherein Binny smashed Andy Roberts for 5 fours in a single over & Madan's gritty 63 not out ; Gavaskar's centuries at Delhi & Madras, Kapil's 9 wkt haul in an innings at first ever test at Motera, Ahmedabad & debut of Sidhu & Richie Richardson in that series. But biggest disappointment was complete failure of India's world cup hero Mohinder Amarnath who had smashed 3 centuries against WI in WI earlier that year against the likes of Holding, Roberts, Marshall & Garner.
Gavaskar no doubt all time great opening batsman. I have seen him practising with wet tennis ball in Hindu colony with 18 yds strip before his maiden tour to west Indies in 1971.
wow......i didnt know that..but sunny faced all great bowlers without helmet.....this fact speaks of him..
In 11 test matches against the West Indies in 1983, Gavaskar scored 745 runs in 20 innings ( not out twice on 236 and 147) averaging 41.38 with 3 100s and 1 half century (90). In those 4 innings he scored 594 runs (averaging 297.00) while in the remaining 16 innings he scored 151 runs (averaging 9.43) He was caught behind by Dujon 9 times in 18 completed innings, his wicket being taken 7 times each by Marshall and Holding.
Sunny is the Sun,others revolve around him.
Some details vary, but in essence it reinforces the point Shastri is making.
Sunny truly LEGEND THE BEST OPENING BATSMAN A WORLD HAS WITNESSED..SUPER CLASS ..TECHNIQUE JUST CLASS..COPY BOOK CRICKET
Ravi Shastri is a wonderful commentator and storyteller. He brings to life every cricketing moment he narrates. Sunil M. Gavaskar sir was a run machine, a one man army, a diminutive genius who dwarfed many batsmen of his era. He was a masterclass in playing the menacing, outstanding fast bowling on seamer-friendly wickets, and class spin bowling on spinner-friendly wickets. An absolute legend. In my opinion, the greatest batsmen to have played the game. Sure, others such as Don Bradman and Sir Garfield Sobers may have better records, but to score 13 test double centuries and test centuries against the best ever fast bowling attack comprising 4 horsemen, Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Joel Garner, is an ode to his batting genius.
AGREED 100%....YOUR COMMENTS FOR GAWASKKAR THE GREAT BATSMAN....HE IS COMPLETE ACADEMY OF BATTING
WITH LOVE & RESPECT FROM PAKISTAN
Sunil Gavaskar is a book of batting technique. No one till now is near to him and will never...salute to the legend
Hats off to Gavaskar ji... And thanks to Mr. Ravi for sharing this.
I've come back to this clip after 2 years and I'm still speechless. Sunny was and still is the best test opener of all time. No one comes close and that's not even an overstatement. Some might say Cook but even Cook didn't have to face the fast bowling in the 70s and 80s with a stick for a bat and that too without a helmet and no rules to protect your life. It was wild, especially against West Indies and the Aussies and then to have scored 10,000 runs is unimaginable and in that 13 of his 34 hundreds came against the best bowling lineup ever assembled.
The little master! Take a bow!
I don't know about the story but Gavaskar did score 147 not out against an attack comprising of Roberts, Holdin, Garner and Marshall. Also, Gavaskar wore a skull cap which could have protected him against a hit to his head.
Sachin's great , but Gavaskar was Greater
Absoeffinglutely true .
Gavaskar scored 14 centuries against Windies greatest fast Bowling... Windies they even made a song on him too..
The famous Gavaskar straight drive of fast bowlers are seldom seen now !
What poise ! What balance & composure against the best fast bowlers of all times ! Absolute joy to have watched !
Where are the batting architects?
Where are the artists ?
Its all down to power hitting and very little grace !😊
How can he survive after hit by a ball bowled by a bowler who is said to be the world's fastest bowler in that era. Now a days batsman wearing helmet also falls down after hit by a fast ball. It's really amazing that Gavaskar's head is more stronger than helmet
Amazing narration, I almost witnessed the scene, Gavaskar d great 😊
Gavaskar the man who make bank counters stop processing transactions when he would be in his 90s….everyone on their transistors n listening to the running commentary there would never be another Sunil Gavaskar never

Sunny bhai was the a rare cricketing specimen best in technic and temperament. I challenge todays batsmen will not be able to play a single day cricket without those protective gears.
This event turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him n his millions of admirers As Gavaskar discovered his form the rest is history!
Where was this? Thanks for the upload.
Gavaskar is the best opening batsman the world has ever produced.
Yes. We are fortunate to live in the era of Gavaskars and Marshalls. Both are exemplary in their respective job. I have followed this in radio commentary and The Hindu. SMG is on the best technical batsman I have ever seen or heard. He can play either way which has been proved. It is quite unfortunate that during the time of tendulkars and dravids, the quality of carribean speedesters has been drastically came down which was a great loss for cricket lovers
I have always maintained and always will say that Sunil Gavaskar was the greatest ever Indian batsman.

Terrific sunny ji. Salute the legend. Shastri kudos for your touching narration
hey ravibhai, we need you back in the commentary box. you were a rascal coach, but a wonderful, energetic, and gigantic commentator.
Great story teller...first person makes it powerful.
Is there any footage on TH-cam of this incident?
No wonder this man is the longest serving Indian coach. Just see the vocal tonic.
I grew up watching Gavaskar and he has always been my fav player. I feel Ravi is a couple of pegs down while he is narrating.
Thats two less than usual
Shastri is Feku. He got chance playing in test by luck. India was touring in New Zealand n Dilip Doshi got Hurt then they called Shastri to be in Indian squad. That's how he got in test matches. In those days plenty dirty Politics were playing. You'll find at least 5 - 6 players from Mumbai.
I don't know why Shastri praising the Greatness of the West Indian team when they didn't bother checking how Gavaskar was doing when he got hit. If they did what Shastri described, it meant that they don't respect the fellow humans. As soon as a batsman gets hit that bad, the sport should be secondary and the care for a fellow human should take over. I remember Shoib Akthar's bouncer hitting Brian Lara on his head. The moment that happened, Shoib forgot about everything else and he ran to Lara and offered help. For him, at that moment everything else was secondary. It was very clear that he was only playing cricket to take wickets and not to kill someone. I call that Greatness. End of the day, we are all humans and if a fast bowler thinks he is not human, please don't call that Greatness.
+KISH KUMAR Well said bhaiya. I do not know of this incident, but this is typical of subcontinent cricketers - the people come before the sport.
That was the arrogance of that team. They were a pack of wolves. Four fast bowlers bowling over 90 mph. No respite.
KISH KUMAR the Greatness of West Indies team wasn't dependant on their rude attitude at that time, but rather the team had depth and the players were skilled in batting and bowling. They were in a class of their own. They were feared by all teams because they were darn good.Every team from England to Australia will attest to that. If you don't believe me,check out how many West Indians players are among the legends of cricket.
expt22 Your idea that the team were arrogant is your perception, whereas the West Indian bowlers may perceived it as a tactic to throw off the opponent.Back then it was an acceptable part of cricket, unlike now, and other teams tried it too, but they weren't as good as the West Indians.
It was about being tough. They gave no quarter and expected none in return. Those guys were not there to mollycoddle you. To them, it wasn't just cricket, it was war.
I think it's anyone who has the right to complain, it's the people who played against them (like Shastri and Gavaskar). If they're admiring it, I reckon there must be something to it. Like an unspoken code among soldiers, no matter what flag they salute to.
Newton’s third law of motion defined.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
Gavaskar undoubtedly has been the best opening batsman for India and the best fast bowing player. He was matchless.
Love you Ravi for the illustrative narration ! that's what Sunil Manohar Gawaskar was!

Sunil is the greatest treasure of treasure Island of cricket.
Video Excerpts of that particular over from Marshall to Gavaskar would have made this video even more special.
Back when Ravi never exceeded his daily quota of liquor.
he actually did exceeded thats why he is bullshitting so much..watch some old cricket videos what is the impact of cricket ball on the face..o much blood..forehead p beech m lagke 15 feet towards the bowler 🤣 wo bhi malcom marshall...koi video evidence nahi h to kuch bhi faink raha h
@@27sadhu iska video Nahi hai par Baki kafi Hain. Didn't always result in blood.
Raman lamba was unfortunately died fielding in short leg similarly the ball hit his head and goes back to the keeper... that much impact that ball had . Sunil gavaskar was very lucky to survive as mr narrator is saying that ball goes back 10 feets back after hitting.
Btw shastri is gud speaker and gud story teller no matter if its self made or a half true story
I was 7 in 1971 and didn't really understand cricket well, but I remember EVERYONE talking about Gavaskar in Trinidad. There's a song about that Indian team, the chorus goes .... 'It was Gavaskar, the real master, just like a wall, they couldn't out Gavaskar at all, the West Indies couldn't out Gavaskar at all'. In one verse the singers says the names of some of the Indian players then "these can really play cricket, on any kind of wicket, they made the west indies team look so bad." I know now Sunny was making his debut. He averaged over 150 in 8 innings! On debut! I remember the 1976 tour better and Sunny getting a century in Trinidad (again). Having seen guys like Sunny makes me a cricket snob, because if there was as much cricket as there is now ...
Imagine if Bumrah and shami were there. .. they would have made life hell for the Windies batsman with their bouncers and awkward angle! Gavaskar is a true legend. Salute ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
how many test team Bradman played? .its eng one team and his avg is 99 .
Ravi was below then average player through out his career... Now he has lots of things to share.
For a long time, he was the only man, other than Garry Sobers, to hit 6 sixers in an over in FC cricket. The bowler was Tilak Raj of Baroda
Well atleast he is good at narrating a story..
What r u good at?
gavaskar was gr8, lot of people can't digest that.
he was great player and there is no doubt about it. but this story is fake. just imagin ball hit the forehead and went straight but no damage is done. I think he forgot to mention about helmet and if he was without helmet then it really need some thought before believing his story
Khurram Kiani he never wore helmet.. but yea story might be a lil made up
Khurram Kiani It tells me that you didn't even see gavaskar playing. Sunny use to wear a skull cap during latter part of his playing days. He kept it under the panama hat so nobody could see it unless the wind blew it away. It was not quite a helmet but was designed to protect him against direct hit to the skull.
