    I first visited in July 1976. At that time the roof was still on and you could access all the floors although the staircase was a bit wobbly on the top one. There had been considerable ingress of water and parts of it were already falling down. There was some furniture left inside. My pal and I called at the Sportsman's. Someone told us that in the 1950s two young men camped there. In the night screams were heard. In the morning, they were gone with just their sleeping bags left, bloodstained and torn to shreds. I have never found any evidence to support that, but it is a good story. We were also told that one of the Jayne Eyre films was filmed there and that tarps with slates painted on them had been put on the roof to hide the many holes. Not sure if that is true but if anyone knows, please let me know.

    I was sent from chester to work in Denbigh years ago n know the area like the back of my hand cos I was responsible for looking after all the schools n outward bound centres in the area. So many found memories of the area n often come back to visit some of my old haunts

    Excellent Tour...it looks haunted...the wind noise was perfect for the background ...In Maryland we have a abandoned missile base from the Cold War days...which were loaded with minute man missiles.....nuclear .....all that is left are the silo's above ground....very disturbing...makes you think about what if.....gives me the chills......we were so,close."..

    Nature soon takes the land back if allowed. The weather has obviously battered it. Has it been a ruin all the time you've known it Paul? I reckon it would've been an impressive place and as you said could tell some stories.

    • @007vauxhall
      @007vauxhall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew it in better condition than this, but don't remember it lived in...nature does take over quite impressive really.

    I have always loved Gwylfa Hiraethog, I remember back in the late 70s/early 80s we used to drive past and count chimneys etc, they knackered up the last of it really with that daft mobile phone mast - why they had to demolish the side of the place for it I don't know. If I win the lottery I have always said its getting rebuilt. When its better weather ill get up there with my new camera to get a video done, be so sad though as it will no doubt be even more down now :(

    A beautiful day despite the wind and many lovely panoramic views - thank you so much for taking the time to share your part of the world with all of us! You are a most fortunate fellow Paul, as you live smack dab in the center of one of the most picturesque parts of the UK!

      Originally, Gwylfa Hiraethog was a shooting lodge for the first Viscount Devonport, Hudson Ewbanke Kearley. When the lodge was built, in the early 1890’s, it was said to be the highest inhabited house in Wales with some of the finest views of the British Isles.
