The Jewish philosopher and historian Philo Judaeus was recording the events of Jewish life in the areas of Egypt, Judea and Greece between 20 CE and 45 CE. He was in and around the Second Temple in Jerusalem. He knew Josephus and they wrote about each other and corresponded. He never mentions Jesus, his movement or Paul. The New Testament stories seem to include dramatic events, people coming out of tombs, the temple curtain ripping, earthquakes, miracles etc. However, it didn’t make the news. Why would rational people believe such incredible stories with zero evidence? It’s seems insulting to God to claim he wants us to believe things like this.

Josephus, himself, was a Galilean, most of what he recorded in "War of the Jews" happened in Galilee, as it was a hotbed for insurrectionist activity during the 1st Century CE. He never made any note about the Jesus movement in "War of the Jews." The mentions about Christians were in his later work, "Antiquities," and scholars, both Christian and non-Christian seem to agree they were redactions added in by later Christian writers.
To get to absolute "smoking gun" evidence of Jesus's historicity , there would need to be at minimum, one non-christian, eye-witness account of Jesus, preferably two. As far as anyone knows, and scholars have poured countless hours into this research, no such record(s) exist. That doesn't mean he didn't exist, but there is still no evidence outside canonical and non-canonical texts, written by Christians.
And this brings up another point. If Christians really wanted to strengthen their argument about his historical existence, they would have to admit more non-canonical writings into the record. This would include some of those from the so-called Gnostic gospels. However, that would be problematic because it would mean conceding to stories and teachings that have been considered heretical for 2,000 years. It would mean the undoing of orthodox narratives. This, the orthodox-minded Christians and all of their offshoot brethren will not do.

To your point about non-canonical writings, orthodoxy, and the historical Jesus, here is my counter-argument: There is another way to view this. Chiefly, non-canonical writings don't necessarily need to be accepted as theologically orthodox to contain a grain of historical truth. I.e., the Christian can reject them as Scripture while conceding that their existence does strengthen the existence of the historical Jesus by establishing a relative chronology. For instance, a gnostic scribe penning the theologically twisted tale of a true-to-life figure not far removed from his own lifetime. That's how I look at it, at least.

@@tomsuiteriii9742 That would be hard to do. Example: The Infancy Gospel was ascribed to Thomas. It tells stories about Jesus's childhood that are literally impossible to prove or disprove, including the story of him killing animals with spiritual energy. These and other non-canonical stories beg the question of truthfulness, which eventually spread to to the canonicals. The Church has 2,000+ years of investment in the canon. They've literally fought battles over them, including bloodshed. Adding non-canonical stories to prove historicity changes orthodoxy irrevocably. I don't see the Church allowing this.

    • @marcj3682
      @marcj3682 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

You said " There is zero evidence outside of the gospels for the existence of even a so-called historic Jesus."
      You sure about that?
Jesus Christ was born during the reign of the first official Roman emperor, Augustus. He was crucified under the reign of the second emperor, Tiberius. It was Pilate that put Jesus on the cross.
I assume you accept that these people really existed (the month of august is named after Augustus).
King Agbar 5 wrote a letter to Tiberius.
Here is part of what was written,
"Abgar, king of Armenia, to my Lord Tiberius, emperor of the Romans, greeting:- I know that nothing is unknown to your Majesty, but, as your friend, I would make you better acquainted with the facts by writing. The Jews who dwell in the cantons of Palestine have crucified Jesus: Jesus without sin, Jesus after so many acts of kindness, so many wonders and miracles wrought for their good, even to the raising of the dead. Be assured that these are not the effects of the power of a simple mortal, but of God. During the time that they were crucifying Him, the sun was darkened, the earth was moved, shaken; Jesus Himself, three days afterwards, rose from the dead and appeared to many. "
      Tiberius wrote back,
"Tiberius, emperor of the Romans, to Abgar, king of the Armenians, greeting:- Your kind letter has been read to me, and I wish that thanks should be given to you from me. Though we had already heard several persons relate these facts, Pilate has officially informed us of the miracles of Jesus. He has certified to us that after His resurrection from the dead He was acknowledged by many to be God. Therefore I myself also wished to do what you propose; but, as it is the custom of the Romans not to admit a god merely by the command of the sovereign, but only when the admission has been discussed and examined in full senate, I proposed the affair to the senate, and they rejected it with contempt, doubtless because it had not been considered by them first. "
OK, several things here. If you claim Jesus never existed, this would mean that three independent people were writing to one another about a "fictional" character, and the "fictional character" was considered important enough to be discussed by the senate.
Does that sound logical to you?
For your theory to work, and Jesus not to have existed, this would mean that King Agbar didn't exist, his letter doesn't exist, Pilate never existed, his letter to Tiberius never existed, and Tiberius never existed, and his reply never existed.
Now, your only way around this is to say that the letters are fake (convenient, everytime people write an account of Jesus, it's fake - LOL). But that really doesn't make any sense.
Further more, the Romans had different gods, all based around sun worship. It was the Hebrews who said not to worship the sun but the creator of the sun - God Almighty - and He would come to earth in human form.
Jesus (who in your world didn't exist), came to earth, and started spreading the word - not to worship the sun, but the CREATOR of the sun - God Almighty - and He was He. So powerful were His teachings that people started to spread the word. After His death, the word continued to be spread.
The Romans started to lose control, so they nicknamed the followers of Christ as "Christian." They threw them to lions, put them on crosses to scare people away from the teachings of Christ. But to no avail. They therefore, under Constantine, accepted the teachings of Christ, mixed them up with their own sun worship, and set up the Roman Catholic Church, abandoning - at least on the outside - their multitude of gods to "myth." One being forced the Romans to change their beliefs. That being was Jesus Christ.
He existed. So much so that Islam accepts He did, Judaism, Christianity, most of Hinduism ... all earth's major religions accept this. It's only in recent times that people question this, and that's because of the nonsense of a religion they have adopted - evolution.
      Sad.

Everything he said can be found in previous religions and philosophies. His message of peace and brotherhood is a product of the modern Enlightenment. Christianity historically has been more concerned with the responsibility of the individual to prepare for the afterlife than for taking care of his fellows. Responsibility for one's fellows is an ethos built into all tribal societies.
His message of peace has never prevented Christian nations from going to war with each other. The history of Europe, as with other regions of the world, is a history of armed conflict.
His messages of love, such as "love conquereth all", have been used to send abused women back to their husbands to die in domestic violence.
Christianity provides the same value to political establishments as is provided by other universalist religions: it provides the ideological glue that can foster a false sense of community where none actually exists, masking divisions of ethnicity, class, gender, etc. , which then fester beneath the surface.

Their humanity, behaviour and actions. There is no doubt at all in my mind who he was/is. This video presents a high level synopsis of what’s out there to be read and reviewed, if you have the time, do it.

@@benjaminvalenti1242 Humanity’s two base yet complete opposite behaviors are well-intentioned and nefarious. Most people are not good "or" evil, they have the propensity for both depending upon circumstances they encounter. For instance, I don't believe in God and am inclined to treat people with empathy and dignity, while Reverend Jim Jones believed in God and brought death to many.
Bibles are not a guide to morality. Well-intentioned people who also believe in a God fail to reason that if their God created everything, then evil (nefarious behavior) is part of that everything. Isaiah 45:7 states that explicitly. They also don't recognize that the stories of Adam's and Eve's eviction, Noah's flood, the crucifixion /resurrection, and Revelation's new heaven and earth reveal a God who after supposedly creating humanity with both good and evil intentions was displeased with the evil half of that equation and attempted repeatedly to destroy it, but has yet to succeed.
Well-intentioned Christian's might want to weigh their beliefs of a world with only good people against their God's failures to accomplish that goal. Either he is a complete failure, or he simply doesn't exist.

And then Christianity swept the world. Read the Bible. Every answer to every question is there. Jesus invites us to follow His Path be a loving person. To purify ourselves of the dark aspects of our nature and instead be loving and kind, helpful and giving. Die to self. We feed the poor, heal the sick, tend to the homeless. We are being painted so black. I think very few of our young adults will raise their children in the Light.

@barronmaxxx2991 None of these things are really relevant to the question being asked. I expected there to be some evidence of Jesus's existence even if it couldn't be established that he was divine. The fact that we only have one fragment of tablet to confirm the existence of Pontius Pilate hints at how difficult it is to find evidence of anyone not an emperor or great general. Still, we do know how easy it is, and how often it happens, that humans exaggerate a real person, or elevate a mythical person to that of an almost historical person. Two examples were given in the video and others include Robin Hood, King Arthur etc. These are probably exaggerated composites with a nugget of truth lost to history. I feel certain that Jesus is such a character. The fact that none of the Gospels were written until many decades later and none are thought to be actual eye witnesses, lends credence to this theory. Perhaps we will never know, but one thing is for sure, if Jesus was the son of god and was put on earth as his messenger, the whole thing failed spectacularly. Yes, I know Christianity is still around, but it is declining as we become less superstitious. Surely god cannot expect people to have faith with nothing to have faith in?

The evidence for his 'historicity' is incredibly weak and the comment section offers many reasons why that is. We can understand why the Jesus story is so popular, however...
The New Testament Jesus story was created to FIX the Old Testament and its horrible stories - which we know are myth now, but when this was all put together, the 'followers' didn't know that. Myth then was more like science to us today to the masses. It was how they looked at the world
The creators of the Jesus story did a good job of tying some of his 'fulfilled prophecies' of the Old Testament - thus making it seem viable. They thought that through and its obvious to someone outside the bubble.
The Bible - which is a library of books spanning around 1500 to 2000 years, was assembled in around 325 AD which really started the crusade of 'organized Institutional Christianity'.
The message of Christianity is a very strong one. We are all doomed because of original sin from the original couple created by God, we can't fix ourselves and therefore we are doomed. Given there is nothing we can actually do about it, God did a blood sacrifice (what he was loves as demonstrated in the OT) of his own son to take on and forgive us of our sins. All we have to do is believe the story, and we have a chance of eternal life of bliss, vs internal damnation. I mean... if you are doing to have a religion, it is a pretty good message, right? It is selling HOPE and weaves a good yarn that includes popular mythological motifs that people really go for, especially when all of this was put together.
Islam saw the power of the Christian story, so they borrowed it and acknowledged Jesus and created their own version of 'statutes' to start that religion.

The three Gospels are three variants of a single template. It emerges all throughout history. Jesus is a Buddha or a Lao Tzu, Arjuna, Jason, Heracles, et al. here is a recent example. See the conceptual template? That is what one needs to go after. It frames every myth and religion. There is Just one Truth. And many ways outward looking that lead to disaster. Christianity is the biggest broadest outward looking path.
Jesus was 'called' as being the only son of God, had 'supernatural powers,' traveled with 'handpicked disciples,' and instructs to seek the 'Kingdom of Heaven Within.'
Arthur was 'called' as the only one who could get Excalibur, had Merlin for 'supernatural powers,' traveled with ‘handpicked, Knights,' and seeks 'The Holy Grail.'
There are hundreds of these to those who look. Jesus is a carrier of the teaching. It is the teaching that has value. Not the source.

Whether you choose to ignore the evidence offered or not, that is entirely up to the person. If you treat the examination of the various evidences as you would a criminal trial then perhaps the Scriptures become more reliable. But after studying the texts through the lens I offered examine the rest of the texts and see if they describe the human condition, and ask if they are accurate how does this apply to us. Are we sinners in need of a Savior? Is Jesus that being? Is the message of Scripture good news, is it consistent? And after all this research, should you still doubt the person of Jesus and his message, then add lots of prayer. God bless.

The number of years after a fact doesn’t negate the evidence. There is no expiry date to history. It is about 160-odd years since the American Civil War but no one says that the passage of time means Abe Lincoln didn’t exist or that the war didn’t happen. It is remarkable that over 5000 manuscripts, and parts of documents still exist. Equally interesting is that the Bible itself is an examination of God over thousands of years by over 40 different writers, many who didn’t know each other. The consistency of their witness defies the argument that ‘age’ has diluted the message. Blessings to you and yours.

Well, yeah. He was forced on people for thousands of years. Will take a while to shake off his influence.
