I have a 400+rwkw Soarer with the vvti 1j, and manual swapped it with a V160 Getrag (before they became stupid expensive). This is really interesting stuff though Benny, nice one.
I put a T56 in my ‘81 Volvo 242 and had to bash the tunnel quite a bit. Made a cutout for the reverse lockout solenoid the shape of a Coke can and wired a box to the VSS to control it. I switched to Holley engine management and plan to have the Holley drive the lockout with GPS input for speed and eliminate the box.
+1 for mx83s needing tunnel bashing for r154s , maby is200/300 handbreak assembly would work like in the jzx90 and jzs171 crowns when those guys delete the floor handbreak , i read on the facebook forums about these gearboxes, glad someone is filming progress and r&d of differences , also mx83s have the speedo adaptors in series 2 as thats when toyota went from cable speedo (series1) to electronic (series 2)
You should see if ya can fit a hilux transfer case from an R151 to the back of that box while your tinkering, be good to know if it’s possible, 6 speed 4wd hilux would be cool.
MX83s are the same for manual and auto. And R154s absolutely need to have the tunnel massaged to fit them. W5* are bolt straight in because that's the box that came in the x8s. Also, remember lift in a twisting jerking motion. It's much better than using your knees lol
@BennysCustomWorks Actually, you may be right about the 81. But I know the tunnel needs a massage on the X83. There was a big write up on it on the old Cressida forums back in the day. Even had the parts you needed to smack in detail haha. So maybe all X83s had a smaller tunnel.
Ah! The part when you know you can pull it apart, and you know you'll be able to put it back together again, but if it works after? I know those feelings.
Hi Benny, thanks for the super unique combo/build. I own an SC with a 2JZ and R154 so I’m very interested in seeing this series. It’s not the gearbox I’d have picked, but I’m not sure there is one on North American soil, so it will be fascinating to see such an exotic combo put together. I get it too, everyone has done a CD009, R154, or Tremec manual swap, so this is very outside the box. Thanks again.
I do have a soft spot for a Soarer/ JZ / manual combo. The first time I thought I was going to die in a car was a mates Jzz30 manual soarer. Good times.
@@BennysCustomWorks A memory is a memory right? 😂 The chassis is such a pussycat, it must have been an exciting ride…. If you’re ever thinking of making a new drag car, I know it’s overdone and kind of boring, but a Soarer/SC gets my vote. I don’t think the car gets enough attention on TH-cam.
A neat rubber inner trim/seal would be to grab a new nissan S13/R32 gearstick boot and ring from gkteck. I used that with an adaptor plate in my Mazda RE Capella.
Ok I am two steps behind, the 5th and 6th gear are OD the first gear is low just like that of a hilux. Ensure you put GL4 not 5 . Input share is longer. Let us know how to swap the Input shaft.
I’d seen images of this Great Wall gearbox before and thought it looked very similar to a R154. How do they compare in their ability to handle similar torque and horsepower as the R154?
3rd gear is the problem with the R154. There isn’t enough metal/meat on the gear with small teeth for high horsepower applications (according to PPG), so the “cure,” is a dog box (which has less teeth and a straighter cut), to fit enough metal into the case. If this gearbox is an R154 derivative, it would use the same basic case, probably with an extension and bolt on compartment for the overdrive (6th gear). So I’m projecting plenty here, but I feel it’s logical, that this gearbox would have about the same torque capacity as the R154. Unless of course 3rd was resized quite a bit from the original ratios to allow for more metal and therefore a stronger construction. I’m very interested to watch as well as I own a car with a 2JZ and R154, but it’s probably not the gearbox I’d have chosen for this application.
So you have just made this gearbox shoot up in value if it’s 900 today it’s gonna be 2500 tomorrow once all the Jzx100 guys find out they can save thousands
@@BennysCustomWorks really they 4500$ in nz from Toyota new I also have seen Great Wall copy the w58 gearbox very interesting to see how this comes along

Just like the old days. Mixing and matching Borg Warner 3/4 speed gearboxes, input shafts, bell housings and clutch plates.

I’ve got a 154 in a mx83 and a can tell you the tunnel needs some loving 😂. I don’t have tripod and the shifter lines up alright 👍
Didn't know this box existed! I've been playing with the Colorado v6/ar5 box for other things. They are pretty cheap.

@@odhranquinn8992 honestly, get an R154. The shifter location won’t work in a Soarer, input shaft is wrong and you’ll need a jz - r154 bellhousing.

Wonder how many of the "Toyota 'box in to brand X, Y, Z" conversion kits the Great Wall 'box will fit. Six Speed Hemi6 might be fun...

awesome
Could you change the Toyota rear extension housings on this box??
Unfortunately not as this has an extra bearing/ deeper casting to accomodate 6th gear

I have had a lot to do with G Wall the synchro rings where out by 70.000 km the company had 26 of them at are branch .so look at them
