The Alton Towers Dungeon Behind The Scenes & First Look

- We were invited by Alton Towers Resort to be among the first people to see inside the new Alton Towers Dungeon! In this video we take a construction tour through the dungeon, along with previewing some of the scenes that will form part of the attraction when it opens on Saturday 23rd March 2019.
As this is very much work in progress, there's still many different set pieces and finishing touches to be added to the various scenes throughout The Alton Towers Dungeon. We're joined by the entertainments team at the park along with Merlin Magic Making as they talk about the exciting things that'll be happening throughout the attraction.
We were also lucky enough to preview some of the scenes for the new dungeon along with seeing some of the programming taking place for one of the scenes!

Theme Park Worldwide is that room where your doing your summary, the Charlie and the chocolate factory gift shop?
Can't believe it was Charlie and the chocolate factory and now it's dungeons like how far apart can you get lmao. 😂
I really feel like Alton Towers deserves a totally unique series of scenes instead of a lot of replicas of existing scenes because those stories just aren't as relevant as they are to cities and their history, Hex is great because it has so much Alton Towers history.
I heard them say they have put this together in 6 months, it's a shame they couldn't have a longer timeframe to build all that unique stuff but it sounds like they only had time to recreate what works already.

Really good point. They could have explored the old ’witch’ beggar woman from the Hex story and developed that into a dark magic section within the dungeon.
I was literally just thinking to myself while watching the Chessington vlog "I wonder if Alton will invite them to see the Dungeon" and here it is! Spooky.

This is so random, for that sort of area as well.. I hope they re-theme the entire area..
imlewisblackman it could be a hint, the dark forest is nearby, a small theming expansion maybe?
They need to restore haunted house back to its creepy original style maybe turn the area into a peppers ghost style ghost town and reinstall doom and sons make the whole area super creepy

I expected this to be inside the towers. It would have made the experience more authentic, like Hex.
That’s what I thought to start off with until he said it replaced Charlie and the chocolate factory.
Yeah I agree, I didn't realise they were putting this in cloud cookoo land- sort of off sets the whole vibe of the area.
Lucy Moseley the area kinda sucked anyway though, the only thing I really liked there was the flying toadstool.
@@chekhovsgunn agreed but I guess it was the kiddy bit before cbeebies and with the whole ice age thing. After charlie went it was just a grey area most people ignored but I think they're going to have to modify that whole area now because it's out of place in that area but I agree with what you say.

finally Alton adding in a 'dark ride (kind of) and a themed experience! Merlin finally know what to do and what people want, can't wait to experience this

Ive done the Alton Dungeons this year. Its very different seeing it before the social distancing markers and flexi glass. Still feel like i'm in the dungeon watching the video. Great video Shawn :D
When my family and I came to London (from the usa) years ago we didnt have the chance to go to the dungeon (bummer) Hoping to come back to your amazing country ❤ sometime to see this; very impressive ! Thx for posting this.
Its too similar to the other dungeons and I adore London dungeon but the dungeons need more variety and different draw, especially if they expect park goers to pay extra

Aaron Hunt I disagree the benefit of having new characters is that it draws people on who are fans of London dungeon. Also history is so diverse I have difficulty believing they can’t find more, have you seen horrible histories. The only reason it annoys me is because I love London dungeons but I’ve been so many times that when I go to another dungeon and they pull out the same tricks or put less effort into attraction it really disappoints me. I’ll still be visiting when I go Alton towers and I hope they surprise me

@@adamheseltine7250 Thanks. It seems like a slippery slope. If this is successful with minimal backlash then I could imagine Merlin potentially charging for future additions. I know it could be considered a bit different as its under the Dungeons brand but it still resides within Alton Towers.

Looking forward to my trip to Alton Towers on 2nd of April, haven’t been since 2015. Just hoping the weather holds out to be great. 🤞The dungeon looks great so far. 😃🕍
Towers is now changing to a darker themed park. Smiled and Wicker man is a dark theme.
I'd say Towers is already a dark themed park. Just look at Nemesis, Oblivon, TH13TEEN, Smiler and Wickerman. A mouthful of rides that are themed to something terrifying.
They do have many dark themes now. I would love to see a new themed area with a happy theme!

The last time I went to Alton Towers I was in year 7 and had to stay with a friend the whole time. She hated roller coasters so I had to stay in the pirate section the ENTIRE time it was sooooo boring!

Sad to see Charlie's has gone but now we have something new on the land. Can't wait for scarefest, once I learn to drive and have my own car I'd love it if I got myself a season pass and just visited as much as I wanted because relying on my parents or friends parents is always easy to fall through.
I don't agree on paying to get into Alton Towers and then paying to get on an old ride you could have got on with the entrance fee before the refurb. just another Merlin rip off

Anthony Williams I agree with what your saying but I think ‘the dungeons’ is a separated company and that’s why you need a other ticket as they have a similar thing with Blackpool, you have to pay to get into pleasure beach and then pay to go ice skating there.
But if the Ice skating use to be with the entrance fee to get in but after a refurbish charged extra also you don't have to pay to get into the park then ice Skating do you.. if you just want to see Ice skating you can
i just feel its unfair if you have to paid £56 to get in atlon towers then £12.99 to enter the dungeon

I go to alton towers once every year and this heavily reminds me of the London dungeon. Im not sure if i want to pay more money for the same experience i had in london if i could get a fast track ticket for smiler or nemesis instead
I wasn't going to watch this video as i didn't want it to spoil it for us when we go to Alton Towers in June,but after hearing it is going to be an extra £5 i don't think we will bother with it.
It is one thing paying for the mazes at scarefest but i really think this attraction should be included in the entry price.
It wouldn't surprise me if in a couple.of seasons the up charge or the attraction is done away with.

@@ThemeParkWorldwide if you don't mind me asking and i can understand you being in a bit of an awkward position because Alton Towers invited you to see the new attraction,but do you think they should be charging extra for it ? and why do you think they should or shouldn't charge for it.
I just feel it's a bit cheeky seeing they done away with a free/included in price attraction and replaced it with an up charge one.
I don't mind paying for it as long as the quality is there really, and from what we've seen it seems that two of the rooms will be excellent and unique!

I'm always open minded on new rides and attractions at Alton, but this one smells of cash grab to me. I'm sad to see that it's very similar to the dungeons I've experienced at Warwick Castle and Edinburgh 😫 But I hope they re-theme cloud cuckoo land for this! I was sad to see the flying toadstool ride go, I love the classic fun fair rides in that section 😞 Still, I can't really complain, that area needed livening up, it was a little bit of an eye sore! I hope the dungeons does the park good! Can't wait for the season to start 😁

If the dungeon stays for next season I’d be focusing on Dark Forest, Gloomy Wood and Adventure Land (where Spinball Whizzer is) because Dark Forest really needs at least one flat ride, Gloomy Wood should get another ride, if not Forbidden Valley or Katanga Canyon can get extended and replace Gloomy Wood. Finally we need another ride next to Spinball Whizzer or at least some entertainment because at the moment I wouldn’t consider Spinball Whizzer inside a theme park area

What a great video both in content and quality of the way it was presented. I loved the voiceover - that worked really well. The only thing I’d change would be overlaying the images on a fixed part of the video as you feel like your missing something seeing the panning in the background.
I think the move to allow previews to people like you guys is incredibly wise and a great move by Alton Towers. You need to use things like this to promote new attractions and I hope other parks follow

Went to the Dungeons yesterday, absolutely brilliant! I got locked in the torturers cage haha! Also the guy who takes pictures (the first one) is the same guy who was there for me! So thats cool

I like the bg music playing for the dungeons, I went to the London Dungeons it was great for Half-term in February.
We love the different soundtracks!
I hate to be pedantic, but the actual show building where charlie use to be was home to first around the world in 80 days, then toyland tours, and then charlie before becoming the dungeon. Doom & Sons was in a separate building next to the show building and has been pritty much disused since it closed in the early 1990s. But it looks like they may have integrated the 2 together for the dungeon experience. i have to say though, that i am kind've facinated by what the dungeon is like thanks to your video.
As you mentioned, the doom & sons building as kept and the new structure built around it! Thanks for watching
The inside definitely look better than I expected. I’m also wondering whether this is just a temporary move, where after 2/3 years they may remove it and build a bigger attraction as part of a retheme of the area.

This move makes sense to me tbh. Chocolate factory was boring, even for kids, and getting dated. Merlin already own the ‘dungeon’ brand and it’s something different that I think will be popular. Anyone who pays for the scare mazes at Halloween would probably also be happy to pay for this.

Looks brilliant Shawn, I’ve never been that keen on scary dark themed rides and dungeons as I was quite young however now I’m older I’ve come to a conclusion it’s not even that bad all it is some silly actors 😂(Joking I’m sure there good) and spooky scenes and that so I’m going to do the Blackpool Tower dungeon in the summer and I may even check this Alton towers dungeon out, I don’t really care if there spoilers to be honest and I don’t know why but I like to know what a ride/attraction is like or about before I go on it for some strange reason.

The judge is martin alcock my old college lecturer from burslem college haha ....now this is an attraction thats been long awaited and for once i can have somthing good to say about alton towers ..... Ill be looking forward to visiting this attraction .... Any idea on how much its gonna cost though ?

Went here today, my girlfriend and I booked a 4:30 slot and we were the only two on that slot... it was genuinely terrifying being the only two on that boat! 😅
It's really exciting to see a Dungeons in Alton. It's sort of a shame that a lot of the shows have came from other dungeons. Would love a fully original set of shoes

Merlin Annual Pass holders have to pay for the dungeon however it's included on the Alton Towers season pass

I keep hearing you guys compare this to "other dungeons." Are these types of attractions typical in the UK? Here in the states, we have live haunted theater attractions, but it seems your dungeon attractions all follow a similar thread. I'm fortunate to have traveled quite a bit, but have yet to visit the UK; hopefully soon! I've wanted to visit Alton Towers since I was a kid, but I get my fix living in Orlando. Love your channel. Keep up the great work!
In the UK (and around Europe) Merlin copy and pasted the same 'Dungeon' attraction all over the place, usually with the same scenes but with a bit of a twist (not much). Originally it was just the one big Dungeon walkaround in London, the best one, but that was commercialised by Merlin and subsequently closed, and moved into a downsized location when the original area was sold to be redeveloped.
As mentioned there's other dungeons that are similar and owned by Merlin around the world!
