I wonder the study syllabus of the new generation will hold this "8th mass medium" A great talk by Tomi Ahonen, thought as suggested by him, we just entered the decade where AR will be reaching the new number of consumerism, I just have to remember to "MAKE THINGS MAGICAL"

Yes. The next big thing. The idea is not new but as the procesing power is becoming accessible to common man, AR can take advantage and introduce something magical to people. Really worth it. I had first tasted it on a ps2 with pseye and compatible video game.

Always entertaining Tomi and very exciting to see what is happening with AR...particularly with Google embracing so aggressively with Google Glasses which can filter into their massive search & mapping technology and information!

Sounds all well and good but it will be only as good as the support it gets. Take Microsofts Windows phone for example, they’ve announced that they aren’t making any more phones, so how long will hollowlense last?

A good talk, but Tomi Ahonen failed to realise (through no fault of his own - this was pre Google-Glass) that head-mounted displays are essential to AR gaining any form of mass adoption. Mobile phone media was dependent on mobile phone hardware. Ultimately, AR isn't compelling if you need to hold your phone up to see the virtual layer.
So the uptake of AR is completely bound to uptake of HMDs. The problem is AR for HMDs is a very difficult technological challenge - one that is only beginning (with Microsoft's HoloLens) to be solved. I like to think of 2012 to AR not as 1998 was to mobile, but as 1993 was. In 1993, the hardware was only just beginning to be possible - the use cases were predicted, but not quite ready yet.
Once HoloLens and its competitors are mature hardware devices (probably around 2017 or 2018), we will be at the 1998 of mobile for AR. By that reasoning, it will be closer to 2025 when we start seeing mass-adoption of AR as a media source.
And that's assuming that the current stigma against HMDs caused by Google Glass' failure vanishes in the near future.

I like your Analysis, and even now, 3 years down the line, I think it still holds up, with Pokemon Go being a exception. I can now start building applications in Unity for my HoloLens (which is still very expensive for the mass market). So your 1998 prediction still really holds up, maybe we are a little further. Let's see how the analysis stands up in the next years
