  • What would the world look like if we could derive our identity from a more interactive form of communication that merges the digital and the physical?
For 50 years we've been trapped in two dimensions, with flat input devices like the mouse, track pad and touchscreen as our only windows into the digital world. John is passionate about how using neuroscience can inform building a truly natural operating environment for navigating the future of computing, one in which AR becomes a healthy, vital extension of who we are and creates deeper understanding, freer expression and optimal productivity.
Augmented reality will change the way we think about design, health, medicine. Imagine a neurosurgeon being able to superimpose a brain scan onto a patient’s head from different views before cutting into the patient’s head to remove a tumor.
Augmented reality superimposes digital information or images onto the physical world to enhance the way we view our surroundings (think Pokémon Go).
John Werner is an innovator, mobilizer, and human super connector. He constantly builds community and is a "moonshot" thinker, innovating as he goes while incorporating the latest technologies. He believes passionately in 21st century collaborative creativity in innovating with direct human or environmental impact. John is the vice president of Strategic Partnerships at Metavision where he explores augmented reality. He is the recipient of the Loeb Fellowship at Harvard Graduate Study of Design. Additionally, he is the founder of TEDxBeaconStreet and on the board of advisors for TEDx along with a number of other TED affiliations. His work has been featured in dozens of TED talks.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Augmented reality smart glasses have the potential to play an important role in the termination of asthenopia and myopia.
    Prevention of asthenopia
Similar in principle to an ophthalmoscope shining light into the eye, the NED optical engine of AR glasses actively projects computer-generated images(CGI) onto the retina.
    1. Once any refractive errors are corrected, people of any age can receive the CGI clearly via the retina; this indicates that the light projected from the NED is indeed parallel light.
    2. Once the refractive error is corrected, the CGI carried by the parallel light is naturally focused on the retina without any accommodation.
    3. By extension of the accommodation-vergence reflex, no convergence.
Therefore, there is no contraction of the ciliary and medial rectus muscle.
So by using augmented reality glasses, humans can read at close range with both the ciliary and medial rectus muscles relaxed, and the eyes will never get tired.
    Prevention of myopia
AR glasses can be turned into AR computer by appending a piece of opaque material on the front of the screen to turn the see-through display into a non see-through one and installing a personal computer operating system on its host.
    • The AR Computer is equipped with a light-transmittable part around the opaque display. The opaque display allows the user to face the sun and use sunlight as the background light source. The opaque display protects the eyeball and the macula, while the light-transmittable part allows the peripheral retina to come into contact with sunlight.
    • The AR Computer can be equipped with convex lenses around the opaque display. The convex lens can shorten the focal length of the light around the opaque display (i.e. the macula area) and change the light that is originally focused on the outside of the retina to the inside, turning the relative peripheral hyperopia into peripheral myopia.
    • With the head raised, the light-transmittable part of AR Computer provides a wide field of view, eliminating the phenomenon where the peripheral visual field is deprived when reading with the head down.
Thus, the AR computer can simultaneously overcome all the major factors contributing to myopia.

Those are some interesting ideas! I'm kinda out of my depth with the eye (physiology/ jargon)
(And maybe I'll explain your idea back to you)
But if you had (at least two, probably more) external cameras, which all feed to a single neuralNet [who's job is to take all the input and amalgamate it into an output the user can understand] this output would be what the headset is outputting to the user's eyes

I think this whole presentation completely missed the true innovation and benefits that AR presents us. It ended up as a list of "might haves" rather than hard facts. It is almost as if he is a salesman trying to sell the latest washing powder rather than someone on the leading edge of technology. Disappointing.

It seems to me that although augmented reality has its specialized uses, I fail to see it as useful for the average consumer, many of whom already are too addicted to technology. Companies who manufacture smartphones and are worried about declining sales due to market saturation need to look elsewhere to maintain their bottom line--that is to things other than AR/VR.

So in your opion, it is more important to cell only cell phones than provide the technology to use AR? Wouldnt having the service available to everybody something good and desirable to benefit in all means?

I agree. Until someone finds a practical use in day to day life, AR won't catch on. Cheap entertainment like the Pokemon did, but was short lived because it was one game. The internet was useful for certain areas too. Until the practical every day use of the world wide web. I can't think of anything that will make AR take off just yet. Remember to buy shares if and when that happens.

He is just explaining and imagining things. What is the purpose of this TED talk? Explaining? Because if he is explaining, we can open Wikipedia and search "Augmented Reality". At least contribute *NEW* information, don't repeat comonsense.
