  • In this Allabreve in D major, performed here by Ton Koopman for All of Bach, Bach shows he had a thorough command of both the stile antico and the modern style within Baroque music, and could use them as he wished. Rhythmically the organ work remains 'antico' - old style. But harmonically, it becomes gradually more adventurous. Stile antico, yes, but in a modern guise.

Master Koopman is the reason I started to listen to Bach. Thank you for that.

      Too bad!
Bach is the only reason to start listening to Bach.

I went to see Ton Koopman in concert a couple days ago, he was directing Bach's 2nd orchestral suite and Mozart's requiem, he is really not only one of the best musicians and conductors of the age but also a sympathetic figure which love to teach and transmit the love of music.

Ton Koopman is just one of the very finest organ players in the art of interpretation of Baroque music. As an organist myself I often listen to some of his fine recordings. Especially the Cantatas by Bach from him and his ensemble.
Exquisite production as always. Both audio and visuals!

I agree. Some don’t care for his style, but I find it exciting. And he is an excellent conductor as well.

Amongst all that glorious playing I greatly admired the filming of Koopman‘s footwork

      コープマンさんですか、わたしもしょっちゅう観てます。アムステルダム・バロック(楽団)と組んだブクステフーデ(バッハの大先輩)全集の声楽作品とか、癒されること限りなし◎

2:11 - Wow, he is using his heels for that. He always said he only used the tip of his feet to play pedals, and that he's teacher was a little bit annoyed for that.

It is hard to tell… it looks like he’s using heel after some black notes?

So is the instrument built a half step high? Was this the pitch center in this particular city? I’m curious to tap anyone’s knowledge who is “in the know” as I checked it against my piano and it was definitely at Eb pitch for written D Major.

I find that quite a lot. I learn pieces of music at my piano for singing in my local choral society but quite often the key it's written in doesn't seem to be the key it's performed at on TH-cam! luckily I have a digital piano that transposes but I would also love to know why there is a difference?

Some organs from this time period are still pitched in there “mostly” original tuning. In this case the pitch tuning is ( a'= 464 Hz/15°C ) .
Someone hysterical organs are pitched in, a’= 414 Hz. Witch is a very low tuning.
Different tuning have a different effect on the music. A lower pitched organ sounds warmer than a high pitched organ.

@@benedictmakhes2830 In fact, tunings as low as a=392 have been used in France. That's a full step low by modern standards. Some have even claimed that Bach's 2nd Brandenburg concerto was written in F so that the rest of the ensemble would be in tune with a trumpet in D (a trumpet at 465 to match organs and strings/woodwinds at 392 for chamber settings would be a minor third apart).

I respectfully disagree with the registration. It sounds confusing and „impressionistic“ for this tempo and texture. Even if Bach used this sound i guess i would keep my opinion. Does anyone has some idea?
Many times the masses end with this „Klangwirbel“ or SoundCloud giving an unharmonic feeling of noise. I heard this only in german/austrian masses, principally austrian. In Brussel the masses were ended so mystically when i heard them, also in Münster. Even if toccatas.

Agreed. The sound is sooo overbuzzed, they apparently could not fix it while mixing. It sounds derailed and messy. Certainly not a good way how to show Bach's innovative command of the "stile antico".

It's not "allabreve". It's "Alla breve", just "Alla turca" :)

Please not him!! So stressed always and really not that great an organist ! Why is he so hyped?? Always a mess for my ears. No lines , no articulation, no stamina, just notes , notes ..incredible uninteresting.
Please return to R. Smits and other of you truly great organ players ! I have supported you for years also financially-but this is a disaster , maybe populist inspired. But really under your level dear friends !

Koopman certainly had his time but it looks like it is over. Retirement day approaching? No offense but there are much better (and younger) performers out there. Sure, he's a legendary (and Dutch, which obviously plays a role for the NBS) expert on Baroque (keyboard) music but age cannot be stopped even by reading the music from a fancy facsimile. Pulling out all the stops was definitely not a good idea in this case, the recording is totally overbuzzed, making the ears bleed, all transparency and clarity of the polyphonic lines so crucial particularly in a "stile antico" composition is simply not there.
