beg your pardon, the 'Duelist' known as Cyrano de Bergerac played by Jose Ferrer & Scaramouche by Stewart Granger should be at the TOP of any such list, right?!?
As a kid, movies that had sword fights, fencing, and fantastic horsemanship, intrigued me and kept me glued to the television screen. Zorro was one of my favorite characters.
Sounds like you grew up with some amazing classics, Zorro is definitely a legendary character. Glad to hear our movies bring back some of those great memories!
Mine too, along with the Lone Ranger & Tonto, Cisco Kid & Poncho, Paladin, and all the other great westerns then, especially love the classics such as this with Basil Rathbone and Tyrone Power who did an excellent job as Zorro, love the precision of the sword fights…..the other was Guy Williams as Zorro….loved watching all my heroes, including the classics such as this one, they were more realistic than in today’s movies with all the CGI/AI generated into them…. Hollywood has lost what is truly important in their films…the heart in making them and creating something worthwhile and enduring …..👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🥰
One of my very favorite all time GREATS!! This is a an "A+" movie in any time or age! It's good for kids and young people. My first time seeing it was at a Saturday afternoon Matinee. All us kids loved it and we jumped up and cheered for Zorro when he was on screen and besting the baddies!! But not all Zorro movies are the same great quality! This one takes the top prize!!
Great movie. Thanks. The sword fight is ranked as the best in movie history. Basil Rathbone was a two-time British Army Fencing Champion and one of the best swordsmen of his day. He taught Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power. He said Power was the better swordsman. He could easily have won if they were actually fencing, but he had to lose because he played the bad guy.
He is on record as saying that Ty Power was the most agile swordsman he had ever known. He said he could have fenced Erol Flynn "into a cocked hat." Rathbone and Power were insanely good in it all the way through. Having read "The Curse of Capistrano," Ty Power actually played the character very well as far as making him seem easily bored and tired all the time.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I would have liked to see more Zorro, but hey this movie was made for a reason and it was great!!!!! Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone were both fantastic. Was a bummer to find out the Linda Darnell's voice was dubbed. LOVE THE ZORRO ENTRANCE!!!!
I always wondered how much horse riding was done by Tyrone Power? Sometimes I feel the only time he is dressed as Zorro is the carriage scene and the meeting in the study?
One of the best Zorro movies ever, only Douglas Fairbanks Zorro movies from 1920 and 1925 are better. This movie has the best fencing scene ever in the history of movies. Basil Rathbone was the best fencer of all the Hollywood actors.
A true classic! Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone are 2 of the greatest. Eugene Pallette played friar Tuck in The Sword of Sherwood Forest and Linda Darnell was just as beautiful in My Darling Clementine.
Very good movie. Very good actors. I was impressed by Tyrone Power's posing as a charming aristocrat with strong personality. And Linda Darnell is just lovely as ever a woman can be.
As far as the "greatest sword-fight" it was Mel Ferrer and Robert Taylor in Scaramouche. They fought like fiends on fire and with balancing on tightropes in much more dramatic and precarious conditions. My favorite all time best was Basil Rathbone who was great in his Sherlock Holmes movies and that woman in this Zorro movie was in one of the Holmes movies where she tried to kill Holmes at a circus. "Elementary my dear Watson" Thanks for this colorized Zorro. Tyrone Power was quite dashing and gave Errol Flynn a run for his money.
First saw this movie when I was Linda Darnell's age (17), and at 60, I still Love it! Every frame is like a painting. Less enthused about some of the color choices, the B&W was good enough, but the print is great. Sharp and clear. 1939,1940 were two of the Best years in Hollywood.
My father in his youth bore a striking resemblance to Tyrone Power in this movie, right down to the wavy hair and pencil moustache. To a very small boy seeing this film for the first time it was as if my father was ZORRO.
This was the movie that made me fall in love with Tyrone Power. Blood and Sand is another favorite, Razors Edge I could go on and on. Only to realize he passed a year after I was born. Oh the heartbreak of a nine year old
Actors when actors were actors,,,Hollywood when Hollywood was Hollywood....Take a good look...doubtful quality like this will ever return...on a brighter note ,, we DID have "Barbie"...
I LOVE old black and white movies (this one’s been colorized) even though many aren’t necessarily first rate films. It’s exactly the same today. There are many quality films being made today with quality actors. (I don’t mind kids walking across my lawn.)
"Old California, in a bygone era of sprawling hacidenas and haughty cabelleros, suffers beneath the whip-lash of oppression. Missions are pillaged, native peasants are abused, and innocent men and women are presecuted by the corrupt governor and his army. But out comes a champion of freedom rides the highways. His identity hidden behind a mask, the laughing outlaw ZORRO defies the tyrant's might. He's a deadly marksman and a demon swordsman, his flashing blade leaves behind..."
1930', 1940's Hollywood, those were the days, when actors were actors and movies were movies. I only wish we had as good as actors like Ty power, Errol Flynn and the likes. Thank god we still have the movies of the time. Stephen King.
Always be my favorite character, also i love the part where they kiss each other.1:14:04 Definitely different than the others i have seen but it most enjoyable. First time watching this, its a amazing moving, i much more like the 90's movie more.
Colorization means nothing. It neither adds nor detracts. Restoration is more important. In black and white cinematography, it's meant to be seen that way.

There was a real Zorro, but he was not like how the movies depicted him... The real Zorro robbed stagecoaches in the Santa Barbara area, and rather than carving Z on Spanish uniforms, what he really did was cut one ear off of each victim. Truth changes when it becomes legend.
Out of all the Zorro movies that were made, I gotta say, see this one first. Then you'll see how every other one's a travesty by comparison. Only my opinion, of course.

Awesome!

My favorite Zorro movie 🎥 with the great Tyrone Power and Basil Rathborne. …and the best sword fight in movie history.
Zorro the Gay Blade was a fun movie, with George Hamilton in a dual role.

the tumultuous way Tyrone was riding his horse though! simply majestic!
Very good movie. Very good actors. I was impressed by Tyrone Power's posing as a charming aristocrat with strong personality. And Linda Darnell is just lovely as ever a woman can be.
Basil Rathbone was an excellent swordsman and did his own swordfighting in the movie.
Linda Darnell, what a beautiful lady and good actress, such an heroic and tragic ending.
