    Also, whoever disliked this video obviously did not watch the entire thing and was expecting a 10 second clip of all the settings needed to be Tarantino. Keep it up bud.

    i won’t be making a daylight profile video for a while, so here are the 2 profiles i use for daylight :
    people : hlog 3, detail -7
    hlog has more color depth and is easier to grade, since you can convert it to 709 easily. this is the best profile i’ve found for skin tones. slog 2/3 is too difficult to grade (for me) for skin tones. i normally overexpose by +1-1.5, for my skin tone it’s between 60-70 ire on the false color on my monitor. the reason we overexpose is when you convert to 709 it gets darker. in post i add back contrast and somtimes saturation.
    product , food , nature : slog 3, detail -7, sgamut.cine
    the ~1 stop of extra dynamic range in luminance makes food and products look good. normally expose around +2. with slog 3 i try to push it as high as i can while keeping mids around 75-85 ire - above that and the color begins to distort. i use to expose with false color and a custom ire band for mids but now i just expose using a lut i made, so im not 100 on it being 75-85 but it’s around there

      Thanks for the informations about the HLG3 and the SLG3.
      I'm still using your Chili Relleno for daylights and lowlights.
      I found out a profile picture from this TH-camr :
      th-cam.com/video/V6tSrpLi4cA/w-d-xo.html
      I've been tested it for one week already, I'm satisfied with the resuts in daylights and lowlights.

      really the best way is to use a monitor with a correction lut, you can also set it up with false color to avoid blowing out

    bonus tips :
    when shooting hlog3 at 120p : at 4000 iso there is a extra boost of noise reduction
    when shooting hlog 3 4k : at 12800 iso there is a boost in noise reduction
    in cine 1, the noise reduction seems to be there all the time

    Wow great video. Very informative. Thank you for sharing your findings with us. But what about daylight? I like the cine profiles for grading. Could it be the case that cine 2 is better than cine1 at daylight? I know cine 2 has less contrast than the others. So wich cine profile do you prefer for daylight?
    I also like HLG3, but its harder for grading.

    • @GeoffreyThomasGonzales
      @GeoffreyThomasGonzales  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Murat Kokten because cine 2 is a compressed version of cine 1, taking 107% output and squishing it into 100%, the quality of cine 2 is degraded slightly. sony did this to make grading easier.
      i’m actually making a video on the best daylight profiles rn; just been to lazy / busy to edit it. but in a nutshell my findings for a daylight profile where you don’t have to worry about noise is : the highest quality footage capture comes from overexposed slog 3 and overexposed hlog 3. by overexposed i mean pushed ~ 2 stops, but NOT blowing out the highlights. then in post just pull down the mids. the difference between them is : hlog 3 has better color and it doesn’t matter that much when going with 709 or 2020 bc you have to convert both to 709 anyways in the nle, the 709 color space still needs to be converted to adjust the gamma. slog 3 has better dynamic range (slightly, see the vid by gerald undone on this, i think it was a third of a stop difference in hdr) the other advantage of slog 3 over hlog 3 is it has more gradation of highlights, meaning it captures backlit/ cloudy / high exposure differences well, where hlog 3 blows out highlights more easily. i’ve been using hlog 3 for work bc it’s slightly easier in workflow than slog 3.
      edit : although i’m considering doing more work using slog 3 bc i like to shoot backlit sunlight

    • @GeoffreyThomasGonzales
      @GeoffreyThomasGonzales  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      for a profile that does not need grading, it’s probably gonna be the chili rellino cine 1 profile i mentioned here, but with detail added bc we don’t have to worry about noise as much. should have the daylight profile video up soon stay tuned dude
      edit : so the detail would be at 0 as opposed to -7

  • @stolencoats63
    @stolencoats63 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First off, thanks for taking the time to make this video. I learned a ton about what all the manual settings do in my sony. Second, I tried the chillies relleno settings on my a6500 and in extreme low light with iso at 25600 (a common scenario in which I need to shoot in) there was a considerable amount of color noise in the blacks in 4k 24 (an insane amount in 1080 120)...compared to make art now's profile setting (which I modified: black level and black gamma to 0 instead of his recommended -2 which looked too black in the shadows) where I get almost zero noise, chillie relleno seems almost unusable...do you think this is just because the a7iii is a far better low light camera compared to the a6500? Also FWIW, even the make art now profile looks pretty bad in 1080 120.

      @doughnut shop cookie dough looks equally as noisy if not more...but maybe since it's a flatter profile some of it can be crushed into the blacks in post...it must be an a6500 thing because the results in your video look fantastic!

    Very awesome vid! Do you have any suggestions for daylight shooting? Particularly which Cine/color combo works best and what exposure? Thanks

    • @GeoffreyThomasGonzales
      @GeoffreyThomasGonzales  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derek Polman the short answer is hlog 3, bt2020, knee at 85% slope +5, detail the same as here, and overexposure as much as you can without blowing out the highlights, same as here. in post convert the color space to 709, and pull down on the mids. i like this more than slog 3 which has slightly more dynamic range and flare / blow out resistant - bc it very easy to grade. slog is a pain for me, and the only use for me when shooting with it is very strongly backlight stuff.

    • @derekpolman3865
      @derekpolman3865 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeoffreyThomasGonzales Thank you! It's really interesting that you suggest overexposure rather than underexposure. Almost every other tips/guide/tutorial for video suggest to underexpose slightly. Wouldn't some of the mids and darks data be lost/crushed when overexposing?

    • @GeoffreyThomasGonzales

      Derek Polman no the opposite. if you overexpose (brighter) there is more information in the shadows. the highlights get clipped, but hlog can handle it plus that’s why the knee is at 85%

    Hello and thank you for this great video!! I would like to ask you about sticking to native ISO. Technically if i'm not shooting slog, is there a preferred ISO to use? Is Native recommended? Or just as low as possible? I have done some tests with an HLG2 profile + an easy grade. Its great for day, but at night its grainy... so I'm looking to try out new profiles like yours :)

    • @GeoffreyThomasGonzales
      @GeoffreyThomasGonzales  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the lower the iso, the less noise and cleaner the image will be. this applies to any picture profile or even film stock. there are edge cases of dual native iso but not for this camera
      going for the lowest iso will produce the least amount of noise in body, but in this case cine 1 (cookie dough) was very slightly overexposed and then pulled down later in post
      hlog 1 has the most built in noise reduction and lowest dynamic range. hlog 3 has the least noise reduction and the most dynamic range. hlog 2 is a balance of these. if you’re trying to stick with hlog, maybe using hlog 3 for daylight and hlog 1 for low light might work
      ultimately tho cine 1 has the best low light performance for this camera

    Hi, Super helpful video, cool style! How should I set my zebra fro these profiles if I want to use the camera monitor for exposure? Sony says: (CINE 1) The maximum value of video output is 109%. Does this mean I can set the zebra to Lower limit 109+ or let's say 104+ to leave a bit of buffer?

      Lucas Prado pretty sure it’s better than the settings out of the box; the color and processing are probably a little different (maybe 1-5% maybe), but again it’s very likely better than just using the standard settings. best thing to do is to try it in a dark bedroom or something

      shot the first 40 or so seconds in hlog 3 then after the it’s cookie dough + correction (saturation with an emphasis in the highlights, lowered the blacks and shadows slightly to crush noise and add back saturation) + some slight hue shifting to make it look pretty

    Hey, thanks so much for this. You are saving peeps a lot of time!
    I have a question. Regarding Chili Relleno, In the video, you say to keep black level at 0 and to under saturate if anything, but in your written description where you have both profiles listed, you have the black level down and saturation way up,(ex below). Are these typo's are did you update these numbers since the video was posted? Thanks, Kenny
