BOLTR: Millwaukee 1/2" Nut Smacker

  • We take a close look at the Milwaukee 1/2" impact wrench to see it's build quality. I'll try to fix it, but It's worn out after 300 hours of heavy industrial use. We'll see why at the end of the vid. The mechanism itself is very robust, but it has a couple weak points that made this gun crap out. My DeWalt has about the same amount of time on it. It doesn't hit as hard as the Milwaukee lithium ion, but it's ten years older.

    I have to say that most of the parts that you refer to as metal injection molded are really compression molded. It is a much simpler and cheaper and much more common way of making powdered metal parts. They are made in a press with a die, upper and lower punches and pins for the through holes. A feed shoe slides over the cavity, the lower punch is lowered in the die and the powder is gravity fed into the die (usually with shaking or vibration to help it flow better), the shoe retracts the punches close in the die, then the upper punch rises and the lower punch raises to the top of the die and the part is pushed off by the feed shoe. Rinse and repeat. No plastic binder, much less shrinkage and no need to force the powder itself under pressure. I worked in a powdered metal factory for 8 years and machined tooling for the last 2 years there.

    The yellowish epoxy on the windings/commutator you are pointing at^2 5:20 isn't for balancing the armature, it's called "gel banding". Used when there is very high speed or radial flex in the armature shaft that can fatigue the fusing of the windings to the commutator tangs and a broken wire. You can see a few seconds later some brownish putty stuck on the opposite end windings that is for balancing.

    As someone who repairs electric tools... The way to check them; Is it making sound? no = Check battery, then brushes then wires & trigger/circuit boards, . All the other components are mechanical so if it isnt making sound (or smoke) in 99% of cases its those three things. And never trust customers when they say they've checked things... I had one customer that came in with a flashlight and said it was broke and he tried everything... He didnt change batteries...
    In the case of this video though, I would look closely on the brush holder/brushes, seems like that is the likely culprit. Usually when you bang on it and it works its a loose/bad wire or the brushes.

      spoofer20 I had a question if you don't mind answering, it would be appreciated: I bought a new brushless Milwaukee Mid Torque 1/2" impact wrench used it for lug nuts with an 80 ft. lb. torque stick, noticed a burnt motor smell (you know that smell) coming out of the rear tool air vent. There is no smoking just that smell, is this normal break-in or should the tool be returned?

    • @horiachiorean8592
      @horiachiorean8592 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @leynagh
      @leynagh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@horiachiorean8592 Nothing to lose ? That's some crazy logic you're using there. It'll give up the ghost when he's using it and he''ll be right in the ****. Faulty electrics don't fix themselves. Get it replaced while you're not depending on it, then you'll have a warranty AND a healthy tool you're not waiting to die on you just when you need it.

    I got the newer version of the dewalt half inch impact and I love it when it's time to work on the car. The 6ah battery gives it maximum oomph, compared to my 4ah and 2ah.it's definitely a difference in the big tool on the different batteries. Ordered a 9ah to use mostly on it. Recently acquired the Dcd991 and 791 so I need more batteries anyway. But ready to throw my dcd780 in the trash because the gear selector keeps splitting into two pieces. Going to try jb plastic weld on it first. I put it on all the corners of my batteries since they've cracked around the screw holes. It works beautifully. It can't be removed unless I grind it off there I never seen anything stick to plastic like that.

    My dad was an ironworker we have a 3/4" one I never needed. It is nice to know it is there when you do. It is a plug in one much like an old 1/2 inch one I also have. I do have a half inch pneumatic and dragging out air hoses is the only bad thing about it. Whether or not mine is a good one I do not know but it is not a Harbor Freight tool and for what little I use it for it should last forever with a drop or two of oil before use. The more I watch your channel AvE, the more my suspicions of the lack of quality control are confirmed when it comes to those super cheap Harbor Freight tools. I don't have any problem with their tools but I don't expect a precision tool or one that will last a long time if I ever dare to buy one from that place. Although I am not always using my tools I at least like the piece of mind that I might expect with a known brand of tools (not Black and Decker).

    • @vanamburgben

      ThomasHaberkorn it hits the side of the anvil, that jolt sends the hammer exactly upward enough to clear that part of the metal, then it turns 180° and does it again on the other part of the anvil. Since it has two sections to do this, both hit simultaneously and it gives a balanced force. There are vids on YT that show this force in action.

    Picked up a Will-fauck-yee oscilating cutter from the trash bin at work, just a couple of months old.
    The wire from the switch to the PCB was broken right at the solderjoint, probably from metal-fatigue.
    Put a new wire in and I now have a semi-crappy free tool :) even had a battery in it, and I also found a second battery.. but no charger :(

      I found a guy on the norwegian version of cragslist that has a charger, extra battery and a usb-charger-thing for sale at about 50 bucks, might be an option. But i have an rc-charger, so I might do that :)

      As most of the battery packs have internal balancing circuits, it's definitely worth a shot. Even completely unbalanced, a couple charge cycles won't hurt anything. It will definitely charge it just fine, as long as it supports a pack with as many cells as the drill uses.
      The chargers and extra battery for $50 isn't a bad deal either, considering that's probably just under the retail price of some batteries alone (depends on model).
      Good luck. :D

    • @MrAlekoy
      @MrAlekoy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I already had a peek inside one of the batteries M12 3ah, it is a 3S2P pack with 1500mah 18650cells.
      Temp-sensor and balancing is broken out on three small pins :)
      Also found out that this model is a couple of years old, probably just been taken good care of or seen little use.. :)

    Off topic fluke tip, hold the yellow button down whilst turning the rotary switch from the off position and the meter will not auto shut off. Handy if you are measuring something from behind interlocks when you cannot easily access the meter. I know it's probably in the manual but who reads them.
