Use this with a CNC machine. Use the induction heater to create a self sharpening cutting tool. Heat + slow cooling = annealing, (AKA softening of the steel). Heat + fast cooling = hardening. To make cutting tools, steel is first annealed. This processes makes the steel easy(-er...-ish) to cut and grind. Finally, the shaped steel is heated again, and cooled quickly with something like water or oil. This creates the hardness needed to use the shaped steel as a cutting tool.
The simplest cutting tool is just a pointy thing. If a steel rod was ground with one angle to a point, and the point was offset from the center, you would have a potential milling cutter. It just wouldn't last very long with this shape. However, if you could anneal the steel, you could grind it with typical cheap abrasives. If you can harden the steel tip with a repeatable process after grinding, you can create a repeatable cutting/annealing/regrinding/hardening routine (aka the cutting time is programmed and it always keeps the tool sharp).
You would still need a way to feed a long rod through the milling collet and a way to keep up with the z-axis tool depth. Why do this? By far, the most expensive part of machining is cutting tools especially in a professional shop. If you could process your own cutting tools in-situ you could machine anything cheaply. Even if you would normally need to have a special cutting tool, the wrong size/shape tool will still work most of the time. Normally you avoid doing this because of the cost:time ratio. If you change the cost factor you must re-evaluate the ratio. I'm suggesting the creation of "One Tool to Rule Them All."

A DIY induction soldering iron might be an interesting future project. Basically a Metcal for a fraction of the price. (Probably be best to use replacement tips rather than trying to adapt normal tips to induction heating.)

    • @NiHaoMike64
      @NiHaoMike64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@_____ It would be interesting to compare induction tips to integrated heater tips. Traditionally, induction had a huge advantage since the heat is generated in the tip itself. It is very well possible that integrated heater tips (like what the TS100 uses) has narrowed the gap to the point that induction no longer has that much advantage.

At 1:55 he keeps saying that " there is a current induced in the inductor!" He should correct that as he has an OPEN CIRCUIT and so there could be "no continuous constant current" in the inductor, It is the voltage that can be externally measured depending on THE RATE OF CHANGE OF MAGNETIC FLUX. Also, the oscilloscope probe normally measures VOLTAGE difference and so what he is doing is changing the magnetic flux to induce" a measurable voltage" at the ends of the inductor. In this case of an open-circuited inductor, the relation is Voltage = Number Turns * Rate of change of flux. There is no external current flowing.
If we want to be really accurate in what we say, what happens when a continuous rate of change is suddenly applied, then the rate of change of flux will force and move some of the equally distributed electrons already existing in the copper of the initial electrically neutral inductor to one end of the inductor, creating the electric charge at one end to form the voltage we mentioned. Note that when a sudden rate of change of magnetic flux is applied, to an open-circuited inductor, the movement of electrons is only for a short moment until the ends of the inductor charge up with a DC voltage in case of a continuous constant rate of change of flux, which cannot happen in real life and that is why we normally use AC activities in an inductor, to reach a limit and then keep reversing the action to produce a variable but a continuous rate of change going from a positive to negative passing through a zero rate of change!!!.
So for a constant rate of change of magnetic flux, the output of the inductor will be DC, and then and only when the inductor is loaded there will be a continuous current in the load, but not with an open-circuited inductor............as there will only be a movement of a group of electrons till the end terminals of the inductor do charge up to the voltage produced by the action Force of the (Number of Turns) multiplied by the (Rate of Change of magnetic flux)
Really we can compare the charging of a capacitor to that of charging an inductor as while the capacitor has a number of electrons being moved from one plate to another by an electric field, in an open-circuited inductor one of the ways to move electrons is by using the rate of change of magnetic field.
Many statements in electrical engineering may sound simple, but they could be misleading and it is a case which can give great meaning to what Albert Einstein said,, " You can make an explanation simple, but not any simpler than that!"
Also, the eddy currents in the knife, do not go "back-and-forth" as he described at 03:18 but Eddy Currents flow in LOOPS and SHORT CIRCLES, in the plane of the turns of the original inductor. It is very important to note that the actions in question ( V= N* d( Flux) dt) have VECTOR QUANTITIES with magnitude and directions and one cannot get neither the magnitude nor the direction wrong as the system will not work.
One needs to look at the direction of orientation of the laminations, the orientation of the coils, so the orientation of the electric and magnetic fields, used in Transformers and Motors and generators to get an appreciation of the importance of getting the orientation of the eddy current correct, and it is not a simple statement, " They go to and fro or back and forth! "

I imagine how melted and deformed is the breadboard after 1 minute of operation. The ZVS as far i know transfer huge amounts of current between the coil and the tank capacitor, especially if you put metal for heating. The traces of the board are maybe steaming hot, and the plastic is burning.

Thanks for making the video, I'm loving your series on how electronics principes work. Sometimes though, you lose me at particular steps because it assumes prior understanding of electronics. In this video it's the 'flipflop' switching between the two mosfets. I understand that switching is part of making the coils oscillate but I couldn't extract from the schematic *why* the switching happens. You're providing DC power to this circuit, no?

Commercial induction hobs are digitally controlled. A shame there's no open source projects for digitally controlled cookers, it would be much safer and much more useful in general. Any idea where I can find resources?
As I understand it, the commercial induction hobs do a frequency sweep (no clue how that works) and adjust their oscillation frequency to match that of user's desired power output to the workpiece (also no clue how that works, some combination of transistors and chunky inductors/capacitors). Any help appreciated!

This person needs to be more careful as all the circuit diagrams he showed do not describe the actual circuit he built. So it follows that the explanation of how it works is not what he described.
All his circuit diagrams in this video have a center tap in the tank inductor and so the coil is split in two where the center point is the positive of the power supply. The circuit he built does not have a center-tapped coil and it operates rather differently from what he said.
The non-center tapped coil is not connected to the positive supply but the two other inductors are. Basically what happens is the following, when one Mosfet is on, the inductor in its drain, sink in current and starts storing magnetism, then when this MOSFET is turned off, the stored magnetic field in its drain inductance will cause the drain voltage to shoot very high, and ACTING AS A CURRENT SOURCE it feeds its energy into the parallel tank circuit which can only be activated efficiently if it fed on a current source. Meanwhile, the other Mosfet is a dead short circuit for the other end of the oscillating parallel circuit.
While this is occurring the other short-circuited monster will connect the tank circuit to earth and also be charging up the second inductor to repeat the other half of the cycle.
The circuit he built is a beautiful circuit as the drain of the Mosfet acts as a voltage source when on and as a current source when off! As an oscillator it is remarkable how the current source effect matches beautifully into the impedance of the parallel circuit.

The wavelength of the coil is a red-herring and has zero to do with the resonance. Wavelength only applies to Antenna in RF systems. The resonance is given by fo = 1/(2*pi*sqrt(LC)). Don is purposely giving that bogus information so that only people who truly understand resonance will get it.
