2008 Haskell Invitational Stakes - Big Brown

  • It certainly wasn't as impressive as his wins in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) or Preakness (gr. I), but Big Brown got the job done in the $1 million Haskell Invitational (gr. I) before 45,132 spectators at Monmouth Park Aug. 3. Maybe now the critics will stop sniping at the majestic bay colt and his trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. for their Belmont Stakes (gr. I) flop.
    Or maybe not.
    Facing a field with only two other graded winners, Kent Desormeaux had to call on a laboring Big Brown early in the stretch to catch pacesetter Coal Play. Drifting out slightly down the lane in spite of steady right-handed urging from his jockey, Big Brown picked it up late and swept past the tiring Coal Play close to home to score a 1 3/4-length win in the 1 1/8-mile Haskell.

      I know, RIGHT!!! Seven years later, I'm still a huge fan! (I was rooting for Dortmund in the Derby and Preakness) he's the second most beautiful horse I've ever seen...next to Barbaro! 2008 was the first time "my" horse actually won the Derby, and for the most part, KEPT winning! I wish he was raced more though...he was a dream to watch!

    Went to see Big Brown when he was standing at Three Chimneys farm in Kentucky. WOW! What a beautiful horse. He has a white spot on his left front leg. Very unique.

    The fact that he ran down the centre of the track shows that he gave up ground and still won.

    Something happened to Big Brown before the Belmont stakes. He wasn't the same horse at all afterwards. If he was right he would have one this race by 10 lengths. He drifted out the length of the stretch.

    Coal Play may not have been a very good horse but he was good enough that day to run the race of his lifetime in a near upset. He set honest Grade 1 stakes fractions and was gritty and determined right to the end. Coming off a 2 month long layoff Big Brown showed incredible determination getting up for the win which was really the 1st time he had to dig in deep. He did it again later at Monmouth on the turf fighting off Proudinsky in a gutsy effort. While I agree that year of 3-year olds was terrible he stood out. Seeing what has happened to Kent and his personal battles with the bottle I now question the validity of his concern for the horse by pulling him up in the Belmont. He should have been a TC winner hands down, albeit against modest competition. Nice to also see he's the sire of Dortmund. Seems he inherited his Daddys' toughness down the stretch as shown in his battles with Firing Line and Chrome.

      @rosendorendonjr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wait, are saying that by Kent pulling up BB affected his shot at winning the TC? Are you kidding me? The horse was completely done as soon as they entered the final turn.

    • @RostClan220
      @RostClan220 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree. Going by the grandstand for the first time BB was fighting Kent. Seemed ok after that but he did not respond at the 3 furlong pole. Kent started to work on him but BB had nothing.
