There's a company which deals with squatters by moving in WITH them and squatting on them as annoyingly as possible (with the owner's permission). It usually drives them nuts enough to make them leave after a week or so.

Yeah it's like the current situation I'm in. My sister and I agreed on remodeling our parent house. She is more financially sound and I know how to do a majority of the stuff needed to be done. So she is paying for materials and I'm doing the labor.
It's my parents so I'd do anything for them for free but my sister complains about stuff like "why does getting this cost so much, why do you have to buy that again, why is it taking you so long to do that". I try to explain why but she still give me those looks. I even try to explain to her that I'm doing this pretty much all by myself and I'm saving her a fortune In labor from having someone else do it. Like I've literal have done thousands of dollars in remodeling my parents house and my sister gets all huffy puffy when I just ask for some gas money every now an then.

This is why Squatters should have zero rights at all. If there's signs of a break in, or zero proof of a legitimate tenant agreement. They should be tossed out immediately. An eviction gives them way too much time to destroy the house and never pay for the damages.
Squatters having more rights to peoples property then legitimate owners is why squatter home invasions are becoming more and more common. They know they can get away with it and do whatever they want to someone elses property then take off and do it again to someone else.

Personally I would have been like, “ok I’ll do it but only if I get $200 for the whole day. And when they inevitably start screeching like all Karen’s do, I’d either jack up the price or I’d say “ok, find someone else to deal with your bullsh*t”. Either way I’d make them pay for the services or have the sod off. And if they did agree to pay I’d make sure to either get it in writing or have it recorded. That way even if they stiff me I can drag them into court and a written or recorded agreement would ensure that they would loose.

The trespassing story reminds me of an issue we had with our neighbors a couple years ago. I was up checking our water meter and saw their son opening our front side gate and placing some old furniture on our property. I drove over and asked what he was doing and he said "Mr. Smith said we could."
I responded with "The only alive Mr. Smith is my uncle in Austin and I know he wouldn't give y'all permission to put trash on our property. And my grandpa's been dead for over 10 years so you better get your trash out of here before I call the sheriff."
Luckily he listened to my warning. And then his parents called my uncle to complain that I was rude. These are also the same neighbors trying to force my uncle to pay for a new fence line and got mad at us when two of their dogs got trampled by the cows after their dogs were harassing the herd.

Not necessarily. It depends on the state. In Texas if you willingly give your keys to another party, you forfeit your right to report the car, boat, RV stolen. You forfeit the right to take the matter to court unless you have filed a lien on the title. In Louisiana the laws are still based on the Napoleonic Code so you legally can not retrieve your own vehicle from a thief. That car owner was very lucky to get help from the police, most police departments consider that to be a civil matter and refuse to get involved.

My grandparents bought a small piece of land on an idyllic lake in northern Michigan around 1963. They built a summer cabin and spent time there whenever they could. In the late eighties they were ready to retire, so they bought the slightly larger piece of land next door to their cabin and built a year-round residence. But they kept the cabin for family to use. Growing up I spent a lot of time there. My parents spent money on maintenance and repairs, kept the pantry stocked with non-perishables, and always brought our own food. Also, we never just showed up unannounced because it was possible that somebody else would be using the cabin. Well, word got out in the family that this cabin was "available." Family members just started showing up, unannounced, and moving in, sometimes for weeks at a time. They always cleaned out the pantry, and when the food was gone, would saunter over to my grandparents house, seat themselves at the table and ask, "What's for breakfast?" This pissed my grandma off. When they wanted to go into town they would ask to borrow grandpa's car because they "didn't want to waste gas." This pissed my grandpa off. Finally, after a couple of summers of this entitled behavior they sold the cabin. At the time, I was in my late twenties and I told them that if they offered, I would have bought it so that they could tell the people who just showed up that they no longer owned it. It would still be available for (non-entitled) family to use, of course. Unfortunately, they still thought of me as a little kid and never even considered this course of action, which they agreed would have been the best choice. Oh well. I still have my memories

Never, ever tell extended family that you have a vacation house - even if it's only for a week or two. All they see is 'free hotel'; they won't pay you, they treat the place like crap, and often damage things but buck and rear if held accountable. If they do find out, tell them 'I'm the only one allowed to go with my SO/kids/parents or the resort charges me'. Anything to get out of being harassed.

I had a cabin on a remote beach that I used on vacation, but once I was working full time and an elected person as well vacation became a moot point. It was three years before I had enough time to drive out and hike in, and there was a squatter there who insisted it was his! He actually told me "Finders keepers."
I summarily evicted him, with the assistance of the police, but the cabin burnt down a few weeks after I went back to work. Did I mention I work in the ER? Guess who was brought in for treatment of his burns! After his conviction for arson he got to squat somewhere else for two years.

When I called, I was told I had to pay more for better service, nothing else they can do. Upgrade all of it, or no internet. Several days of calling, getting the runaround. Finally got in touch with someone that found the order to slow down the service, no reason given. They did it to force me to upgrade and pay them more. I have some internet back, but it shuts off several times a day and has to reload. It's nothing like it was.

With regards to trespassing, it happens all the time. My grandparents owned two farms (about 1 mile from each other.) One was the main one with our dairy herd and milk barn. The other was for hay, some tobacco, and heiffers. I lived in the house on the second farm for a year and a half and would constantly have to run people off the property that were riding dirt bikes and quads. Every time I would get the same story of "Marvin(My grandfather) said we could," which I knew was a lie. I would respond back with, "Great, go talk to him and have him call me, or even better I'm headed there in 20 minutes, just meet me there." I knew my grandfather would never allow it for 3 reasons. 1) they were riding through the hayfield which could start a fire if it was really dry. 2) Even if it didn't start a fire, it limits production 3) There are a lot of ruts in the field due to runoff and such which can make it dangerous.

You must legally file a eviction against the squatter's as if you were evicting a someone who was paying rent. You can't forcibly remove them. Then you have to contact your local county sheriff. So slow I couldn't even do a google search. I looked at which devices were using so much bandwidth. Turns our our next door neighbors were, "borrowing" our internet. I didn't mind a car stopping on the street for a few minutes, but these buttheads were using it to download and upload pirated video/audio files. As soon as I saw that, a password was immediately installed. Problem solved. I could do what I wanted in the beginning days of online Netflix.

Heck I offered my boss 20 $30 a month so I could use internet at work. now keep in mind when I'm working I don't play around on my phone, I am not one to take breaks voluntarily. it's mostly if I have a last minute client cancel out in which case you can sit around for an hour and a half or more waiting for your next one. Or at the end of the day while I'm waiting for clients to pick up. Ultimately she refused the money because I usually do a fair bit around the shop I do not have to. Most if not all WiFi modems also have a feature which allows you to disallow connections for every device except for those which have their MAC Address (aka machine address) registered in the modem. That way, they can't get in even with the password. It's inconvenient though, because you have to do all the technical stuff to find the information you need. And some mobile/cell phones are deliberately set up to deliver a different fake MAC Address every time you connect to WiFi, so that has to be disabled in the phone in order for this to work.

We helped when one of them in troubles and they helped us when we were in troubles. We visited each other during festive seasons every year (before pandemic). Always in communications. There was one time, one of my cousin's family had to cancel their trip to the hot spring resort that cost thousands due to unavoidable circumstances. They couldn't refund because it was already too late. So instead left it to burn, they gave the trip everything to my mom. My mom offered to pay back but they said no need.

I have a similar story to the first one. When I was a university student back in the late 80s, I bought an '82 4x4 Chevy truck and wanted to sell my '77 Monte Carlo. I agreed to sell it to the maintenance man for my apartment complex because his car was worse than my car, no heat or a/c, to top the list, and his girlfriend had just had a baby, so he needed something a car seat could go in. I'd known him for about 6 months and thought he was cool. He said he couldn't pay all at once, but could make payments. I had it for sale for $1000, but we agreed on $800, with $300 down and $500 due in installments. Once paid, I'd sign over the title. I got the $300, he got the keys and promptly skipped town to move in with his girlfriend's mom. I didn't know where he'd gone, but the landlord told me that he had told her that's where he was moving. My landlord didn't know where, either.
6 months later, I saw a car that looked like my Monte Carlo, some things were different, driving by the university. So, instead of going to class, I made a U-turn and followed it. Once I confirmed that it was mine, I called the cops. They came and cuffed the guy. The cops were like, "Do you really want him arrested?" And I said, "I just want my car back." The cops gave the guy 10 minutes to remove his belongings. I got to keep the new stereo and speakers he'd installed, and the mag wheels. A few days later, I sold the car to a co-worker who needed a car... but he had to pay everything up front. No payment plan. To pay all at once, he borrowed money from several of our co-workers, who asked, "Why can't you just let him make payments?"
Oh, because of the new stereo and mag wheels, I was able to sell the car for $1500!

Worse than just someone randomly taking over someone's house are the people on craigslist who advertise furnished homes for rent and rent someone else's home out. The owner comes home from being a snowbird in Florida or the desert southwest and finds someone living in their home. Not only can't they move back into their own home, they have to go to court to evict the people in it. So 2 groups lose on this one. The people renting the place lose their deposit and what they believed to be their rental home as well as the home owner. Of course you will never be able to find the rental scammer.

My absolute Karen of a neighbor, Amanda. (Thankfully, she moved out several years ago.)
My absolute psycho of a stepmother, Ella. (Thankfully, she got divorced several years ago. She also often butted heads with Amanda.)
That absolute Karen of a customer, who screamed at me for not doing my job (I was doing my job, just not the particular job she wanted), and flipped me the bird. I will call her Ms. Rudefinger.
Unfortunately, that last one was a much shorter exchange and probably won't make for a great story, but it was also a lot more recent (only a couple months ago), and I'd still love to tell you about all of them one day.
Now just to give you a taste... one particular highlight of Amanda is when we started using fireworks in front of our house (on the fourth of July), and she came out of hers and screamed at us "It is illegal to use fireworks in the city of Houston!" (no, it isn't), and she called the cops. But when the cops showed up, they took one look at our fireworks, went "THAT'S what she was screaming at us about?", and then demanded that she stop wasting their time.
I wish I could have seen the look on her face, but I was hiding in my closet the whole time because I was a little kid and I was terrified.

I would have loved to see that lady take OP to court, the results would have been hilarious!
Karen: I took his car and had it repaired! I should have the car!
Judge: Did you pay for it?
    Karen: Of course not!
Judge: Give it back or go to jail.
    Karen: But I fixed it!
    Judge: After stealing it.

The car one is no where near the weirdest. When I was in small claims had to watch for a class I was taking. There was a lady who would go buy a $500 car use it until it broke down. Then sale it for scrap to a junk yard for generally $250. Than demand the $500 back from the person she bought it from and would sue them. Not for $250 but $500 and court cost. If she went to court of course she always lost the case every time the defendant showed up. The judge asked why on earth do you think you are entitled to a refund after you sold the car already. She said it was because most people would give her all or part of the money back since it was easier than dealing with the court.

A few years ago my family moved into a newly constructed neighborhood. The land was previously part of a large private conservation. Apparently he local teens used to ride ATVs in the previous summers and hold secret beer parties in the woods. They were surprised as heck when they rode into a whole new neighborhood that spring while the whole street was having a welcome party. They asked if they could still ride up there which was now our backyards and we all said no, it wasn’t safe as mist of it was newly reseeded and done lots still in construction.

On Story 3, my bet is that the Entitled Trespasser was under the assumption that the OP and her friend were doing the same thing he was: trespassing. So, he was going to bluff that it was his property, but he didn't have the proof *on* him, you see, because why *would* he; it's HIS property! He was counting on the OP not knowing it was not his property, and being cowed by his confidence into assuming it must be. At least, that's my assumption on what this guy thought he was going to pull off.
Story 5 - It is amazing how people suddenly remember they're "family" when they want something from you.

The third story is a bit interesting, as there are some places that enforce Squatter's Rights, but that involves at least 7 years of a property being unclaimed. I'm sure that's the angle the entitled person was trying to argue from. That said, barriers and ditches are a good indication that someone actually owns the property, and you need to GTFO.

Story 1: Darkfluff, I think you talked about this story before in another video. This is giving me dejavu.
Story 2: I would've sued the woman, on top of pressing charges.
Story 3: Just because you have been on a property for a long while doesn't mean they own it. Dude needs prison time.
Story 4: I would've helped in the beginning, but ditched them later. If she does some harassment, charge her for harassment and slander.
Story 5: Entitled family member isn't very smart. She doesnt get that not everything is about her, nor is entitled to the same treatment as a sister.

That story with the car is obviously a case of grand theft auto, which could incur several years of prison time for the mother. She should be grateful that she got off as lightly as she did.
And with that trespassing story, if a sign says "No Trespassing," then don't go beyond that point. It's just common sense, folks.
And for both of these stories, if you claim that a piece of property is your own, then you'd better have the documentation to back it up, or else any legal action you take could at the very least get you laughed out of court, or get put in jail at the worst.

It can happen in some states in Australia too. Non council land, of course. Some "neighbours" used (possibly with permission at the beginning) some land belonging to other neighbour; after 20 something years of use it became theirs. Was disputed but if I recall correctly the "user neighbours" won it. Wasn't much land but in a built up area quite valuable.

Last story, entitled relative. Yep, all kinds of joys.... A cousin and I had been close since we were kids, shared a birthday and she even lived with me in another state while she did her senior year in high school. We were still close after that, even oh kids were close on age. Until she up and moved and changed her phone number without a word to me. She kept in contact with my oldest brother who was 16yrs older than she because he had a house he would let her use during the Watkins races. Never a call from her even when she and her boyfriend were in town for the races. 4 to 6 years after she cut me off I had moved out of my home state and was living in NE TN not that far from Dollywood I got a call from her, she had to leave it on my answering machine. Oh she sounded so bright and happy, let me know just how much she missed me. That she and her daughter were planning a trip to TN and Dollywood and wanted to stay with me. To please call her back with directions to my house. Never called her back. Never did find out what happened or why she cut me off like she did. But don't call me after so many years all happy and wanting me to supply a free hotel.

I had a blazer, until loaned it to my brother. He went 4 wheeling and messed up the transmission. He felt, since it cost so much to fix, the vehicle was his and traded it in for another car. To this day, he doesn't understand why I say that was theft.
