Just as a warning for the first time you change the oil on a Scout, sometimes they over tighten the oil filter from the factory and make it EXTREMELY hard to remove. I actually had to end up puncturing the filter with a screwdriver through the side, and use that as a leverage bar along with my filter pliers to get it off. I installed the replacement hand tight, and haven't had an issue since.
The factories tighten everything way way way too damn tight, I've had to take a hammer to allen wrenches to break screws loose and some phillips too. Most used bikes don't have tool kits in them any more, most BMW's sure do.
I wonder what the specs are for the torque of the drain plugs and I really wonder what is the correct amount of oil. I will now go and search for the relevant information needed not found in this video.
Usually drain plugs you just get them snug after all its better to have jt fall out, leak its oil infront of your back tire and die in a crash compared to overtightening and cracking or damaging anyof your engine case. So to spec is is clesrly somewhere inbetween
It is always a lot cheaper than a shop doing it and I'm getting ready to buy my first new bike, a 2018 Indian Scout Sixty, I've built a lot of bikes, choppers and basket cases, they turned out new sort of, but real new, I'm 66 and haven't ridden in 25 years as life just got in the way, used to ride a Goldwing to work, my Dad had a Indian Chief in 47 so I thought what the hell, they don't vibrate near as bad as a Harley does from what a friend told me who borrowed a new Scout.
Do NOT overtighten drain plugs as they can easily damage blocks aluminium thread and result in costly repair. Use less torque then stated in the official manual.
When you tighten the 2 oil drain plugs you say 'torque to spec'. Well why not say in your video what the torque setting(s) are for these 2 plugs? I understand that there may be changes in engines in the future but really just say what year and model and suggest to check the owners manual if the torque settings are in ther. Other than that an OK video.
If anyone complaining about missing torque settings is an Indian rider, I might choose to buy a Harley instead. Certainly don't want to be associated with this bunch of whinnies. All the missing information he did not mention in the video are in the manual. Why not take it a step further: - Make sure to buy a Indian Scout first - Don't use open flame sources close to the engine - Don't drink from the oil container, as oil is bad for your body If you can't use a manual to look up the specs, then you should probably take your motorcycle to the dealership.
It's a good habit , if by some chance you are in a dirty environment (parking lot) and you get sand or debris on the dipstick that you cannot detect it may prevent you from running it through your engine . It is most likely just a force of habit for the technician in the video.
Like others have pointed out, would have been nice to have been given the specs: fastener type/size for the plug (now I get to play the what size allen wrench game at an awkard angle!), torque and how much oil. For those who always say "who could give this a thumbs down?! waaaahh wahhh" Well, the video is usless without those specs because all of us still have to go and get the manual out to change our oil. Video is supposed to help us not have to do that.
hello, thanks for the video. The back of my Twenty Bobber squeaks when it bounces. I removed the springs/shock absorbers and oiled/greased the bearings. no idea. Can you give me a tip. It's loud and you can hear it while driving.
what is the torque value of the actual oil filter some people say to buy a special tool others dont. i am a new bike owner thanks he says a quarter turn past half tight with no wrench am did i hear it right?
That's not totally correct, you can prefill the filter and let it sit for a few minutes and the filter will absorb 99% of the oil and have very little oil leaking out when installed, try it.
For all those whinging about not being told what the torque specs are, LOOK IN YOUR OWNERS MANUAL! Simple! Oh and if you CBF here are the specs 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm).
But we are all here watching a video about how to change the oil on a Scout. They took the time to make the video. We took the time to watch the video. Would it have been that hard to include the specs. Not just the torque settings on the drain plugs, but also, what size/type tool do we need for the plugs? I don't, just weird to put out a video and leave all that stuff out. Now I have to go dig my owner's manual out.
PLEASE clarify? So, is it 10,000 mile? Or 4,000 mile? So, it is the Same oil that does both the engine oil AND gearbox primary drive? Correct? Thank you and regards.
nich bland I'm not complaining, but a few things I noticed: editing was sloppy. cut away from key moments rather than cutting other content. (showed regular tightening but did not show the one extra turn to finish it for example). also mentioned tightening to spec but did not mention that spec.
Haydrean I would assume that this video will be available forever now. And specs and procedures will change. This is why the video will seem basic and not very specific.
Kinda agree. While I appreciate the video I wish they would have shown the horn being removed, the full tightening of the filter, and the full tightening to spec (whatever the spec was) of the drain plugs. Also, does the oil pan need to be big enough to catch oil from the drain plugs AND removed filter? How long should the oil be allowed to drain from the bike? 30 minutes? Hour? More? Does "upright" when checking the oil mean perpendicular to the ground or on the kick stand (as shown in the video)?
Why does it empty in two spots but fill in one? This is confusing to me cause Harleys have two or three drail/fills, and most bikes only have one drain/fill.
Do not back off the oil filter at all hand tighten that thing as right as you can. I backed off mine only a quarter turn and found a small pool of oil under my bike after the first ride out. Better tight and hard to get off then having that thing come loose and sending you in a spin from oil slick on the freeway!
He is referring to when the lip/rim of the filter gets to the end of the threads and is actually touching the body of the engine. The moment they meet up.
I also have a stripped out drain plug hole which was done by somebody before I owned the bike and now I don't have a bike to ride because I can't find a dealer to fix it I am so upset and broken hearted and enjoyed my bike so much I am crying as I write this I guess I'm just going to have to send it to the junkyard being so I can't get Indian to help me with the repair that's just the way it makes me feel have a nice day broken hearted in Brush Colorado
????????????????????????????????? Just drill a small hole into it and then use a, 'easy - out'. A tool that one screws in ANTICLOCKWISE which then grips into the drain plug so that when turned ANTICLOCKWISE it will therefore screw out that drain plug.

The stock dipstick for the Scout is jut about impossible to read. Aeromach, which is now owned by Billet Proof, makes a stick for the Scout that is easily readable. I strongly recommend you buy one.
I've heard you should do that but I don't think it's entirely necessary. I think it depends on the engine and where the filter sits. Could possibly get flooded with oil the minute he puts oil back in for all we know. Why don't you try throwing some oil in your Scout before putting the filter back on and see if oil drains out all over the floor. That will give you the answer.
