- Mike portnoy (dream theater, avenged sevenfold, flying colors) battles Billy Rymer (Dillinger escape plan, the rivalry) at the long island Drum Fight at Ollies point revolution rock club. They were judges along with Kenny Lane Schwartz (Ghostwolf, Exes of Evil, Disco Vietnam) and Frank Gilchriest (riot, Virgin Steele).

What makes Rymer so terrifying as a drummer is just how easy he makes it look.
I love how Billy pays tribute to Mike's greatness while utterly demolishing him.

People will hate me for this, but I think Rymer is better. I like the way how he can do so much with so little and make it sounds huge
Rymer is better.
Rymer has a better sense of odd rhythm and timing, and he can change from normal time to double time, to cut time, back to the normal beat instantaneously. It shows a lot of control and discipline. If I could be half the guitarist that he is as a drummer, I could die happy.
Also, Portnoy is great for fancy footwork, whereas Rymer seems to like using his hands more.

He's newer so he's had more to go by, I'm a MP whore but he's older and such, so hasn't got the skill of a younger buck who's had the level of knowledge at his fingertips that he has.
Still, MP gets his respect for being who he was when he was and having the impact that he did

I feel like Rymer could slay almost any Dream Theater or A7X songs fairly easy, but Portnoy would probably have a tough go of a lot of Dillinger songs. They're both really great drummers though
@MovieCore Dream Theater songs aren’t really challenging chopwise. “Dance of Eternity” is only tricky because of all the time signature changes.
DonKrieg95 Huh? While I think that Dream Theater is overrated in terms of complexity, their songs are pretty damn hard to play. Listen to the crazy soloing part in the beginning of Lost Not Forgotten.

Billy plays a mike portnoy beat at 5:08, it's the beginning of the song "6:00" off the awake album from dream theater. Pretty cool, you can tell he's got some respect for his elders. New school cats will always be better than older generation guys chop wise, but the respect is there from billy which is cool.
+Laura Summers Well said Laura. Despite Portnoy's ego, he DID do a lot for the drumming world, and Billy knows it. There's ALWAYS something to be said for those whom came before and helped us become better. Billy makes me wanna get back after it; the metal world needs guys like BIlly to carry the baton, but it took Portnoy to get it there. Too bad he (Portnoy) botched the Dream Theater gig; he'll never get it back from Mangini.

@ARKAEA33 Zach Hill is in that 'new school' demographic bubs.
BUT as a side note, and as much as I've always enjoyed his projects,
most well established drummers can play consecutive rudiments-turned full set poly-rhythms like Zach. It's just viewed as meandering after a while. He DOES have endurance for daaaaaaays but he certainly isn't doing anything unattainable. Just of the top of my head- check out Eric Moore; that dude is a session drummer but puts Zach's speed and endurance to shame when he's just goofing off and that's one of a multitude of drummers out there right now.
I came here to point this out! Also with this 'new school' referencing... Billy is much more Gadd/Porcaro in his execution, nothing like Hill who is more like Keith Moon in the way of artistry and the abstract. Ilan Rubin and Billy Rymer are the best of today's drummer imho.

When Mike is asked to play super complicated stuff in his bands, he'll do it gladly, but when asked to drum on the fly he can only come up with the random-crash-hits-80's stadium rock solo we saw. It's a drum battle, not a "who has recorded the most technical drums in their past"-battle and he just failed at it - simple as

Mike is a great drummer to non-drummers, much like Neil Pert. Billy actually has incredible chops.
ive noticed that the people who say ''portnoy, jordison, barker, peart... etc'' are the best drummers, quite often dont play the drums on dont know shit about it.

Can't believe you guys are lumping Neil Peart in with Jordison and Barker... Neil Peart overrated?!?!? WTF? I guess everybody is overrated 30 years after they've raised the bar so high and turned everything on it's side. You guys should learn and respect your history.... In the late 70's and 80's, the stuff Peart was doing within the realm of technical Rock drumming was so forward thinking and darn near impossible--which is why he inspired so many drummers and still gets named dropped as an influence by most Rock drummers worth listening to. Like everything else, a newer generation will come and raise the bar even higher from the previous generation (see the video above)...but, in order to get to the guys that YOU consider "the best" today, you had to have guys like Peart first. The 'my dad is better than your dad' guys will never understand that, though. I guess you think guys like Buddy Rich are overrated too... you know, he was of an older generation too...

I'm a huge fan of Mike but he got stomped here. But in his defense, he never claimed to be a master of technique. You can be an effective player without them, but you will be limited in what you can do. Also people with more developed technique will annihilate you in situations like this.
Beefnhammer you can tell portnoy is a groove oriented drummer, billy is all jazz and technique. both awesome, but very different drummers

rymer is my best friend, in the world, (this isnt even my youtube account by the way, sorry guys, youre logged in). Gotta say, I know you're all debating who is better. We listened to dream theater, he and I, our entire lives. we were so heavily influenced by them. we come from kings park, and we were SO proud that kevin moore, john petrucci, and john myung had gone to our small high school. we religiously listened, studied, and played their material. Sure, my buddy -- his playing speaks for itself, but portnoy and those fellows are the reason we play how we play. So much love to both of these dudes, because DT molded us, and our playing, from an early age. I made rymer listen to NIN, he made me listen to DT. That's what friends are for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (PS: we talked about this moment since we were little kids, so he had 20 years of mental preparation for this very day -- listen to what he says at the end). To all you guys, who I know are musicians, keep up the good work. we love you all. Also, check out the nightmare police I totally just highjacked their youtube to make this comment. You are being very nice about billy crushing mike. Mike may be an influence to him but I’d imagine it didn’t take billy long to surpass an overrated drummer with a giant ego.
Now... I absolutely love Portnoy... but Rymer definitely won by a landslide. Technique and emotion are what caught my eye, and Portnoy seemed to lack both in this performance.
I learn so much from studying both Billy and Mike. Each of them have something unique to offer in terms of songwriting and application of technicality. I don't think that makes one entirely better than the other.
Billy is a hard hitter and a very controlled one to boot. That is what makes him a beast.

Mike Portnoy is a god but it's hard to outshred and outgroove a jazz drummer. Plus, Billy is fucking nuts. All in all, this video was sick.
Hahaha... HELL YES. I pick Billy Rymer - not only overall, but his chops and catch-factor were far-and-away more captivating. Love his energy and creativity. The drum-beat @ 2:35 is off-the-chain. I loved all of it to be sure.

Of course Rymer is better. It's called the evolution of drumming. But w/o the likes of Mike (or any other influencial drummers out there), I doubt Bill would be as good as he is today. Mike is still one of the best drummers out there... Not as a soloist, but as a band's drummer.

yeah exacty man.his improvized solos suck badly but his composition (and performance thereof) in the band is tremendous.
Mike's also always said he was never a soloist drummer, it's funny how people take fans opinions and conflate them with the opinion of the actual person

It was most likely an honour for both drummers to be here together. Billy Rymer because he was probably influenced by and listening to Portnoy and his contemporaries in metal. Mike Portnoy because he's witnessing the change of the guard to an intricate, modern sound which he [ultimately] had a hand in creating. Both should be proud because they're highly intelligent as drummers and this is a wicked video.
three years late mebbe but still, Portnoy may have "influenced" Rymer but those skills he's using are not "new" or "modern" and he had little hand in creating any of it. Billy is a creation of years of insane big band, swing, fusion and jazz that fused it again with metal. the only connection between Portnoy and Rymer is they both play a kind of metal. Portnoy wouldn't be able to hold most big band/jazz drummers greats gig bag, let alone sit in with them. Rymer, most certainly could.

True. Every drummer has strengths and weaknesses and it's only threw appreciating and respecting one another can we truly better ourselves.
I've always been a fan of Portnoy....and this video kinda reinforces that. After all, he's still putting himself "out there" against other drummers.......and in this case,imho, got shown up by a lesser known drummer. Billy Rymer is phenomenal.....pretty cool that these guys can have a good-natured competition and have fun doing it.

Deberían ser todos más honestos. Cuando escuché por primera vez "The Dance of Eternity" quedé fascinado. MP abrió muchas mentes e hizo huella en la historia de la batería. Me parece que podrían estar más agradecidos de los caminos que abrió para que hoy existan bateristas tan talentosos como Billy Rymer. No sólo se mide a los músicos por su capacidad de interpretación, sino por su capacidad creativa (el caso más destacado: Lars).

Lo puse como ejemplo porque sin ser un gran ejecutor, sí me parece un gran compositor para su época. No sé tu edad, pero yo en los 80 escuché "Master of Pupets" y "And Justice for all..." y me voló la cabeza. No veo la música como una competencia, sólo veo músicos que han abierto caminos.
Exactly, listening to Portnoy on LTE2 is what got me into drumming in the first place. But these days, he just doesn't seem to have the same presence/innovation that he used to.

Billy Rymer seems faster and smoother. Mike Portnoy is just getting older. Also, the time signatures Billy usually plays are more complex than Dream Theatre's timing.

I think both drummers know exactly where they stand and have a huge amount of respect for each other. Eg, Billy playing 6:00, and just look at Mike at the end. Portnoy has without a doubt been one of the biggest influences in prog drumming and Billy is off the fucking wall with his chops, helping inspire a new generation of drummers. I started off jammin the shit out of DT when I was a teenager, and then actually moved onto TDEP late teens/early 20s. Both two awesome drummers. Sick video.

Prog metal was created long before Portnoy, try listening to the stuff that the guys in Dream Theater grew up on, such as ELP, KING CRIMSON, UK, pre 78 GENESIS, YES, GENTLE GIANT, BRAND X, CHIC COREA, BRUFORD, ALAN HOLDSWORTH! RUSH! These are the band's that created prog! I left out STYX because right from the start they sold out to the AM radio stations

Hell yeah I definitely was caught off guard with that.
They're of course both immensely talented, and I'd even argue that they played equally well here. It's just a matter of stylistic preference in this case, and I'd personally go with Billy Rymer. I like The Dillinger Escape Plan more than Dream Theater, so I may be biased, but I enjoyed Rymer's playing more in this video.

Well I've obviously known Mike longest, and maintain a huge respect for his experience and his accomplishments and talent and legacy.
But ever since I first saw Billy play with Dillinger, and specially after I saw him CREATE with them, well I must admit I developed a man crush over him.
So I must say that I pretty much expected the expert level of skill, groove and precision that can been seen here, and I wasn't disappointed :)

Mike Portnoy had allready used up his drumknowledge by minute two...whilst Billy could go one hour without boring the audience ! And I am not disrespectful bla bla I'm just stating facts !

Billy 110% technique, rhythmically creative and originality.
All points are spot on.
Both guys are great, but I'm not a Dream Theater fan. I think Portnoy has technique and style, but I'm giving it to Rymer on technique, rhythmic expertise, and (least of all) I'm a HUGE fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Mario Duplantier needs to be in one of these. As does Thomas Pridgen.

Hey, I'm a classically trained singer. I was learning how to sing to bands like Rush and Queen when I was twelve years old. I'm twenty eight years old now and I have to say....I love screaming. Granted, it's not for everyone. But when done right it can be very difficult. I have noticed that a lot of guys who are a generation ahead of me have very little appreciation and I have realized that comes down to a matter of taste.

I think I first found this in like 2015 and I showed this to my Dad who idolized Portnoy for decades and he visibly did not like this video once he realized Billy was waxing that ass lol.
Love the music Portnoy has played on much more, but man did Rymer outplay him here.
Kudos to mr Portnoy for taking that in good sport. His drumming sounds really tightly controlled as ever but Billy grooves hard and makes music rather than just showing off his chops.
