I'm caribbean decent and from the hood so the headbutt was taught as a standard weapon. Fighting dirty is the only way in the streets. Now sports eh.... Also the headbutt is a primary move in capoeira

In a street fight, there's no "dirty" as far as I'm concerned. If you start a fight with me, you're already dirty. My purpose is self-preservation and getting out of the fight alive and intact, and I will use any tool I have in my toolbox if the opportunity presents itself.

Seen a lot of the old skinhead combo. Doc Martens soccer kick. Most people check and lower their hands to not get kicked by a boot. This makes them also not protect their face, you're already doing a running move forwards continue the momentum and plant your head in their face. Doesn't work every time but a lot of times. Sometimes even against people that are way better fighters than the person throwing it because they don't train against either soccer kicks or headbutts.

00:00 🥊 Headbutts in combat sports: Some consider headbutts dirty, but they're comparable to other techniques not allowed in regulated sports.
01:09 🦴 Your head isn't the weapon in a headbutt; it's about using leg muscles to drive into it, not brute force from the head.
02:09 📏 Advantage of height: Smaller stature can leverage headbutts by hitting where it hurts for taller opponents.
03:06 🥊 Similarity to uppercuts: Headbutts don't require excessive force, just precision and leveraging body weight.
04:32 🛡 Safety in headbutting: Moderation of power and technique can prevent injury and maintain control.
05:44 ⚔ Headbutts in fighting strategy: Avoid chasing knockouts, incorporate them strategically as distractions or positional moves.
06:24 🥋 Training headbutts: Incorporate headbutts into pad work and sparring cautiously with trusted partners.
07:50 🤝 Headbutt training etiquette: Coordinate with a partner or practice headbutt-like movements to integrate them smoothly into training.
09:17 ⛑ Safety in practice: While valuable, headbutt training should be done cautiously due to potential impact and injury risks.
10:00 🔀 Headbutts in technique: Integrate headbutts strategically into combinations, especially after creating openings.
11:26 🧠 Importance of training: Headbutts can be a game-changer but require intelligent, safe training for effectiveness in combat.

Where was Dave Leduc for this amazing video?? He sure is the Master of the Headbutt. Sidenote; Lethwei is considered a combat sport. So headbutts are not illegal in ALL combat sports.
Edit: The clinch guard will also change a lot when headbutts are allowed as it is a major game changer. Very interesting to compare the guard of a Muay Thai guy vs a Lethwei guy. The head protection and idead that it is a danger is quite prevalent.

  • @dennistobio1543
    @dennistobio1543 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm with Jake. I like headbutts actually, a lot, but I like them because I'm shorter than a lot of people. I actually believe he's right about elbows, and in fact, when you shouldn't throw a headbutt you could throw an elbow, but when you could land a headbutt, you should also land an elbow, so... I train them, but not so much because it is also dangerous when using 10% of strength, and I think it doesn't worth it to put yourself in more danger than the actual fight. It's like back throwings in Judo, they're dangerous but there is a tiny time to use them, and they look awesome like this.

    • @ArmchairViolence
      @ArmchairViolence 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm with you. Mike is mainly using them at distance, and I can see how that could be risky when you have the option of elbows.
The place I really like them from is a wrestling clinch where you already have head pressure. You can throw short, tiny headbutts with minimal risk. Kind of like how shoulder strikes are used in MMA.
It lets you dominate the clinch because they're too busy reacting to your headbutts to clinch fight.
Not exactly a knockout blow, but virtually no risk!

Being from Glasgow this is known as a "Glesga (Glasgow) Kiss" or a "stookie", "malky", or "heeder" We have a lot of terms for headbutting, I guess it's like Eskimos having 50 words for snow.
What's funny is it actually has its origins in a self-defense context of finishing a fight before it stars when someone puts their face too close to yours, or if someone is going for a razor in their pocket which was common in the 70s in gangs. I'm guessing the logic was you can prevent someone going for a weapon with both hands or control a weapon while still doing damage.
You also taught it pretty much how I was told to do it. The only difference was when throwing it from a step in jab like that people always showed it more like the headbutt was a right straight, where rather than driving in square you pivot the back foot and rotate the hips to catch them with the corner of the forehead like the point of your elbow.
I think that comes from soccer being the national sport as that's how you redirect the ball with your head, kind of from a boxing stance. I'd be curious to know though if you think that's more like a sport elbow where cutting a person in self defense isn't the best option or if you think there's any merit to it?

Fighting in a competition is very different than defending yourself or someone else. Your there to win, not to look pretty at that point. Can't see can't fight, can't breathe can't fight. This accomplishes both as long as you train and know when to strike. Throat punches work well also.

I'm 100% with you about the guy who throws punches in Jujitsu. It's one thing if we both agreed on it, it's another if he's doing it just to be doing it with no prior agreement.

Once while my 6’10” pal and I were playing with foam swords we got into a clinch and I performed 2 perfect head butts to his chest which then gave me the opening to break his clinch and cleave him. Ever since then I loved headbutts.

Icy Mike would do great in kudo, they allow headbutts there and they have cool helmets (which let's be honest, it's a big plus)

Is lethwei a better martial art to train on its own, or Muay Thai?

I used to play with foam weapons with my super tall friend in high school, i usedmy weapon to bind his up in some way which gave me an opening to launch a headbutt like this into his solar plexus. I thought he was so big that it it would be a nice little distraction but it pretty much dropped him

I always thought of the headbutt as something you just attack the nose with from the clinch

Given the combat sports that do use headbutts - Combat Sambo, Lethwei, Daido Juku - how are headbutts trained in these traditions?

What about using your core as well? Used against shorter or opponents that are positioned slightly lower then you? You can still brace your neck and it has more power. Now you still have to monitor overall power to keep from injury but it works the same if hands are tied. Seth does this in the video when hitting the pads.

I once headbutted a guy that threw a haymaker at me. Blocked the Haymaker, stepped in, grabbed his head, pulled his face into my head and also drove my head with my leg and backmuscles into his face. After that his face was totally fucked up, he fell flat on his ass and all his friends behind him directly lost their interest in fighting me. Headbutting in closequarters is brutal and effective.

“i think of dirty fighting as maiming things” bro what i have scars from being headbutted, ive broken noses with it, and broken teeth like im all for it being a legit technique but i gotta admit its a lil dirty
edit: headbutts can be great for getting a person to stand straighter up too if theyre hunched over to get a takedown but idk how applicable that specific scenario is outside of wrestling
