Damn, that pickup change made a huge difference. It wasn't just the pops from the strings hitting the poles, the clarity of the tone increased dramatically.
I might keep my thinner strings, but I’m definitely doing the pickup cover mod. Great idea, and saves me from buying new pickups with different covers!
I almost gave up on this video because of the way you were pounding the bass way beyond reason. I know it's a style but 10 secs of it is all I can stand. When you began to play music on the bass I appreciated the video much more. Thanks.
Yes there's a reason on this 'pounding' exactly to show what I want to avoid on those poles issue, as a thoughtful observer like you sure understand. I appreciate your reply, thank you.
Guau hermano!! Es genial lo que acabas de mostrar!! Se escucha perfectamente la diferencia del antes y después! Quedé fascinado! Saludos desde Jujuy Argentina.
Very cool. Never seen a bass restrung this way with those gauges. I've strung a four string BEAD, but not a B gauge tuned to E and an E as an A... I'm trying this for sure!
Cool! It's not for all tastes for sure, some friends of mine don't like it, some do. If you like to dig hard it worth a try... You'll need some extra turns on your truss rod and be careful with the action! Cheers!
@@RicardoStrani Thanks. This weekend I am restringing my Ibanez ATK 750K to this. It’s a solid, heavy, Swiss Army knife of tones beaut of a bass... so the heavy gauges might really suit.
@@RicardoStrani Well... its really a different feel. A darker tone and of course a tighter tension with the B-E tuned up like that. I think I like it so far. My G&L and 4001 take on different duties. But this is cool.
Hola que tal! Que fue exactamente lo que le colocaste entre las pastillas? Tengo el problemas de que bajo la altura del pickup pero baja el plastico nomas
I have 10 basses 3 of which are Squires and 2 Fenders, all have stock pups, and all the pole pieces stick out a bit,I've never heard of keeping them inside the covers, not saying your wrong just I've NEVER heard of doing it
Sensacional, cara. É difícil, com a compressão do áudio no TH-cam, ver uma diferença tão evidente quanto a do seu antes e depois... mesmo se tratando de baixos diferentes! É da água pro vinho. Parabéns pelo trabalho e pelo vídeo.
Hello... That's a very personal choice... From a 'standard' point of view, I prefer 0.45 - 105 instead of 0.40 - 0.95 for example... Some would prefer lighter gauges with a slightly higher action. I aways go heavy gauges with low action... Cheers!
Hi, I like heavy bottom strings with low action, I do this for years... the owner of this P bass played one of my instruments and felt it was very nice too... so we did the same on his bass... I like that way so I can play harder... so it feels and sounds tighter... not for all tastes, sure... but with proper setup it gets very comfortable...
Very interesting and sounds great, I just wish you put the whole setup process in the video (truss rod adjusting, saddles height,...). I'm curious how to make such setup so the strings that large don't become too tight when tuned that high (E and A). I have large strings on one of my basses, but is tuned ADGC or BEAD so the tension is relatively normal.
Thank you! Regarding the truss rod set, it's not different than normal, all it need is some extra twerking to correct the bow when you put heavier strings... maybe two or three fractions of a turn more than usual until the neck is straight.
Yes!!!! I love that dead sting.. my balls dropped 🤙.. good shit bro I play on an early 1990s 8x10 ampeg U.S.A. They quit making my rig in the late 90s. It's a struggle to keep my gear alive. Tubes cost a fortune. Ampeg sold out but I still have my USA fridge. Good job dude
Hi, both bridge and truss rod, as these operations requires adjustments and readjustments I opted not to detail to save some time on this video... but yeah, aways truss rod and bridge
Damn, that pickup change made a huge difference. It wasn't just the pops from the strings hitting the poles, the clarity of the tone increased dramatically.
I guess it's because of the lower action (less distance between strings and pickups)
Not only is that a great tip. You’re a great player dude! A joy to watch! 🤘🏻
Thanks bro!
bass style, tone, and your playing are all top notch, thats how you play bass! fantastic work man!

Enjoy Picking Up Tips, Great Work Bro
Very Helpful video, especially the cardboard under the pick guard trick, thank you sir.
Cheers, Davyo
At first i was like "man he needs a pick up upgrade because it sounds dead" but afterwards 👍
Wow great playing
Great setup tutorial and great playing at the end.
Excallent! I did the same in my p-bass and sounds GREAT! Thanks :-)
Great info and great playing Ricardo. Thanks
My pleasure, greetings.
i like the cardboard idea under the pickup covers. i will do that to my pickups. thanks
This sounds like a really great P bass....not all of them do. Great playing too....can leave the slap out for me but great fluid playing.

nice sounding bass , great vid

Black cardboard pickup cover shims give the bass a "Darker" sound. Just saying.
No it wouldn't.
Nice playing man!
I wanna get a P-bass and put a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter pounders in it.
Good idea, thanks for the video! I have a similar issue with my fenders
awesome playing!

I appreciate that you liked it, be sure to set the action low otherwise it can hurt LOL... cheers dude!
Great job, it’s sounds really good.
My guess: most of the difference in the tone comparison comes from the new strings
Thanks man, i have same thud issue

Very informative. Thank you.
A b and an e for your e and a? Sick!
And maybe add a little truss rod adjustment, if necessary. Nice playing.
04:42 sounds like Pearl Jam - Jeremy ;)
Shouldn't you be checking the intonation after alerting the bridge and as a part of a standard set up?
I did a complete setup including intonation and truss rod adjustment but focused the video more on this pickup stuff... but yeah I did
Big thanx for instruction. I have thuds and its terrible.
👍😀

Very good nice fat little dirty sound and beatu chords 😁💥👌
Hola me gustó mucho el video! Si se siente la diferencia del antes y el después. Pero.. no entiendo bien como funciona..
Las cuerdas al tocarlas hacian contacto con los polos de las pastillas, ademas de que tenia la accion alta.
1:38 what is that sick bass line from? I keep watching this vid everyday because of this part of the song onwards, giving me major ear worm lol
LOL! It's just me playing over some drum samples I have here!
Wow, that part was sick
Nice playing man! I Just bought the same Bass today, surely will apply the updates.
Bravo!
This was awesome
What's a recommended string height for a typical 4 string bass?....I hear they have to be low for a good slap

what about jazz bass?
Yeah, I'm editing one Jazz Bass video on the same subject.
Very nice playing!
Very interesting video. Thank you.
Regarding the strings B and E, tuned in E and A, I wonder if they are not likely to break?
Surprisingly they stand very well at those tunnings, no problem at all!
@@RicardoStrani It's good to know that.
3:36 Why do you want the E and A strings so large?

Cardboard on each side of pickup, legendary 🤙.
When you adjust the action, are you working from the bridge or are you using the truss rod?
Hi, both bridge and truss rod, as these operations requires adjustments and readjustments I opted not to detail to save some time on this video... but yeah, aways truss rod and bridge
Ricardo Strani awesome. Thanks so much!
So why didnt you just upgrade the bridge as you were at it?
Because the cost is prohibitive here were I live
What type of tape did you use to protect the fretboard?
masking tape
Bravissimo grande
Whats pickup height for each string you suggest ?
Usually I set the pickup height as almost the same height of the fingerboard, just a little lower.
Muito bom. Parabéns
Sounds like a P bass should!
What songs are you playing?
Jeremy (Pearl Jam) Pow! (Larry Graham) and some mine
Do the same things apply to a jazz bass?
Yes, absolutely.
So lets resolve the pole’s issue:
Looks down: vintage staggered polepieces >.

GOOD IDEA....
Great!
What's the point of recessing the pole pieces?
The video explains
the strings can touch them and make some unpleasant clicking noise
@@headlesnorseman701 those clicking noise are exploited properly by steve harris as part of iron maiden's signature bass tone and sound!
👍😎👍
Bridge looks like it needs a new bridge xD
Fenders stock bridges are so flimsy and cheap looking
I agree
They are classic looking, and fully functional. They have resonance and full tone.
Very nice playing!
