  • Showing my good friend Scott how to keep his P-Bass playing like a dream. We adjusted the truss rod, the string height, pickup height, shined the frets and we also replaced the pickup foam.
    I used a few tools from SkyScraper Guitars. Links are below:

    That's a gorgeous bass! I just picked up a p Bass and this is helping me get it dialed in (I have no problem setting up my guitars, but don't have much experience with basses)

    Hello Guyz! Great tutorial ! 💯 I usually put a little graphite from a drawing pen in the grooves of the neck nut to make the strings slide more smoothly. (excuse my French ! 😇)

    He seems like nice guy, you know for a Bass player....😛. Funny you posted this my family has decided to start playing bass, they both got new basses and got Sam a Fender Rumbler 25amp practice amp. He went and got a 300 amp speaker with a separate head unit.

      That doesn't sound smart, right? The tension difference between round wounds and flat wounds is huge. The neck will need to be set again.

    Releif is just under a third of a mm...you were right with the 12 thousands,,
    of an inch....every one sets string height & pickup height different as you say...me 3mm both ends of pickups at the 12th fret depressed..i'm old school, not a happy slapper, i play down the low end, 'the money notes' beneath the 7th fret...sometimes up to the 9th....i like to play bass

    Good job ! You are a professional ! I liked it because you are careful with the instrument. I need a setup on my bass American Special Fender precision, because I bought new Thomastik Infeld JF 344( low tension ) strings. I live in Reno, Nevada. Where are you located ? Thank you for your answer !

  • @ricktrapp482

    I've never seen anyone loosen the necks screws to adjust the truss rod, I don't think that's correct.

    • @SkyscraperGuitars
      @SkyscraperGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A lot of fenders (and some other guitars) have the truss rod adjustment on the heal of the guitar. You absolutely need to loosen or removed the neck to make neck relief adjustments. It's a huge pain if you have to go back and forth several times. Bass guitars tend to be more trouble than 6 strings.

    • @ricktrapp482
      @ricktrapp482 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SkyscraperGuitars, your correct and thanks for the reply. I was thinking of truss rod adjustment locations the are more accessible, as the newer models are.

    • @SkyscraperGuitars
      @SkyscraperGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ricktrapp482 It is a "vintage" way to do the adjustment. You see it on old Strats and Teles. You see it on old and new basses. There are some traditionalists who still use the heal adjustment on guitars, but it's kind of silly since everyone knows how to drill the headstock hole... Either way, I'd rather NOT have them in the heal, but I don't get to make the decisions!!! :D. Thanks for checking it out.

      @@SkyscraperGuitars And this is why I always shy away from American made Fenders or vintage reissue stuff...my Made in Mexico standard Fenders are my fav because it's so easy to set up with the headstock truss rod access.

    • @trevaudio
      @trevaudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do on American fenders, you’ll destroy your scratch plate otherwise….just buy a “stubby” Allen key, and you’ll never have to take the neck off again !

    what do the numbers mean lol

    • @SkyscraperGuitars
      @SkyscraperGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the string height gauge, the numbers are 1/64th of an inch. That is generally how manufacturers refer to string height - i.e. 5/64ths on the bass and 4/64ths on the treble.

      @@SkyscraperGuitars :D thanks for coming back to me, now i just need a calculator to translate ;)
      sidenote: i have a buzz on my open a string, it goes away when i put a tiny bit of pressure on the tuner side of the nut. what could that be? is the a string grove in the nut too deep?

    • @SkyscraperGuitars
      @SkyscraperGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Homs86 It could be a low nut issue. It could also be neck relief. There's an odd chance it could be a high fret or your action at the bridge is too low. It all kind of connects. I always start with the easiest answers and as I eliminate them, I work toward the solutions that take more time/effort. Pushing on the back side of the nut can deflect the neck enough to mask a relief issue, it can also counteract a low nut slot. The neck deflection could also mask a high fret or bridge action issue. Ugh.. I don't seem to be clarifying... LOL. I hope that helps.

      @@SkyscraperGuitars haha, i also felt it could be every thing you mentioned ^^
      a fretjob is due, so ill do that and do everything else once more and see if that helps, if not ill get a new nut and work on that. thanks for the tips, it still helps in the sense of "yes, it could be anything" :D
      thanks a lot and greetings from ger :)

    I was thinking about getting my bass out of storage and starting to play again, but after this, I think I'll leave it in storage. This seems like more hassle than working on a car.

  • @BSidentifier
    @BSidentifier ปีที่แล้ว

    You should never tighten the truss rod with the strings on as you're asking the tiny thin little truss rod to do too much. The right way is to remove the strings and neck, then clamp the neck into a back-bow to remove all tension from the nut. Then you can tighten and release the pressure on the back bow clamp jig. Better yet, with the tension off the nut, remove the nut, clean it and the truss rod threads with alcohol, add a little petroleum jelly and you'll have a much easier time.
