    Absolute gold. Years of chasing the Flea, but instead should just have followed the Josh. This video is only 8 minutes of content, but worth months of lessons. Imagine, by this pattern you could be easily seen as the next best Flea by hundreds of drunk members in the audience 😁

    You have the best sounding bass out of all the TH-camrs. Some are way too quiet, some try to get too fancy with effects for a teaching setting. Yours is just done correctly. Thank you for that.

    I'm 44 now, and became a "student" of Flea when I was a mere 14. Learned everything Chili Peppers at the time and anything else that tickled fancy. I picked up slap bass so fast. It's not that difficult if you have the passion. It's trick playing. The real trick comes with making music better with your playing, and that requires being discernative.

    Growing up as a suburban skater kid in the 80s and 90s Flea was my introduction to slap bass and his technique strongly influenced mine although over the years has morphed with countless new influences

    Fun fact: using your pinky to finger 2 frets up isn't just conserving energy, it is actually how you would finger the same thing in an orchestral setting. F# in 1st position is your third finger on an electric but your 4th finger on an upright bass

    The only cool bass trick I can do is a fast TTP slap in the middle of a bassline and double-finger pops which is kinda like popping a power chord. I miss the days when I had the energy and time to play more.

    You can see in his videos that Victor Wooton often uses his 4th finger when doing octaves. Maybe always - I haven't listened to everything he does. I'm going to say that may be a player preference thing.

    crackle in the electronics can be cured with a few sprays of electronics cleaner. I just had the same issue.

    Awesome chop I tried to slap & when I popped it was difficult to build speed because as my thumb bounced up I tried to pop in one motion I can see the value the thump strikes root note and the octave pop implies tonality and then you can get funky with the fifths or the blue note !

    Don't forget the Victor Wooten advices you to practice the movement while isolating your thumb, wrist, elbow and shoulder.
    This will help you adjust what you're using to slap when fatigued during a long performance.

    I hate to break it to you boys but bluegrass players have been doing this on banjos for almost a hundred years.

    You can slap and pop without newer strings. It creates a more subtle mellow slap tone great for going back and forth from fingers to slapp

      Mellowest slap tone is slapping a fretless with flatwounds.

    Keep it diverse too, I started learning off what Flea did and got stuck in that rut. Change it up, listen to Rob T, Les and Billy G. Don’t focus on one too much!

    Think about your slap bass progression in terms of YEARS too. It might take a year of daily practice to really master something and maintain the endurance to keep it going for 45 minute funk jams.

    I‘ve started bassing a few months ago. I hated string instruments back then.
    Within the last 2 days I’ve learned how to slap and get some tones out of my crappy cordt bass. I‘ve tried to learn how to slap when I begun back then - no chance. It takes a while to get control over the string when you learn evrrything by yourself ^^
    Now I can‘t stop the slappin and also I want a Dingwall now -_- (PS good multiscale bass under 1000 € anyone?)

    Been there done that but I am grabbing my bass right now to work on MORE SPEED! Thanks. And Breathing??? It took me a few years to realize I was holding my breath. Ship me you poor poor p bass and I'll restore it as a donation to you!
