Everyone in the workshop applauds your effort, John 👏 Just stumbled upon this video. It was exciting to witness your thought process and your approach to some of the challenges we faced.
Just a quick note on the handle. I'm not sure if you're aware, but wood oriented in a cross grain direction is significantly weaker compared to its long grain direction. Dried wood might also have some tiny cracks, which may not always be clearly visible but can further weaken the part. Most folks address this by either cross-laminating layers of wood, combining wood layers with metal, or incorporating a frame inside the handle that is strong in all directions. Our method involves taking a single thick piece of wood, cutting it in half thickness-wise (front and back), CNC machining it into eight parts with hidden channels in the middle (initially had six on each side but changed to four), CNC machining a plywood core (which is stable and strong in all directions), and then gluing everything back into one piece. This is followed by shaping, grooving, drilling, hand sanding, and finishing.
Your handle seems to be thicker and the kettlebell is not the heaviest one, so this might be less of a concern. Just thought this information might be useful for building other wooden pieces in the future.

Love the editing and the nice cinematic shots that you experimented with in this one. Two questions though: where did you learn all those manual skills (woodworking, leather crafting, etc) and did you buy your own equipment? Actually a final question: how the f*ck does one decide "oh I'll make a totally overkill kettlebell out of leather and walnut, it will only take me a hundred hours of work!"??

Haha, thanks! 1. Had some experience, but my recent water damage has made me pick up a lot of my skills again, future father in law has every tool I could need, but I've picked up a lot myself. Just learned leatherworking though! 2. I just couldnt get it out of my mind that I could probably make it, then I started planning out how I would do it, next thing I know I'm 8 hours deep into stitching with swollen fingers asking myself why... 🤣

Dude, that hot and heavy workout montage 🥵 Lol. Awesome build! It looks amazing, and really impressed with your skills both in crafting and cinematography (and getting shredded).
Now I'm curious; what do you think your work with that kettlebell is worth?

Haha thanks so much! With how much sheer time it took me to make it, I wouldn't sell if for less than $1k. Looking back there were a lot of things I could have done to make the build faster/easier so after a few iterations I'd probably be pretty competitively priced

@@John.McIntyre I cam here after going to that same website you were referring to (because I thought it all looked overpriced and thought it might be easy enough to make... but after now I think their pricing is fair. The workout clips really caught me by surprise! :D Makes the workout equipment look well worth it lol.
