Thanks once again for doing my pick! Hey Phil, you’re entitled to your opinion most people think the intro of the song is quite beautiful, but I think it might be the kind of thing that will grow on you if you hear it a couple of times… And yes, those that have suggested doing When The Levee Breaks next are right on. Official studio version from the fourth album 1971. That’s yet another side of Zeppelin that’s a little bit different than anything you’ve heard. Zeppelin takes you to the deep South… Do it!!! Love ya 😊❤
REAL music, real musicians and singer. No auto tune, computer generated stuff like now days. So many now don’t know how to pick up an instrument and actually play one.
Thanks Ed Zeppelin! You should start teaching some class on the group 😉 ! We've got another request from LZ lined up and then When The Levee Breaks seems to be the next logical step!
It was. Then it leads into Plants beautiful singing. Then it takes off and maybe you have to be a drummer to understand. Just how hard it was to duplicate.
I guess he doesn’t realize, they do have an acoustic set, which are also beautiful songs. That’s what we love about Led Zeppelin, you never know what you’re going to get, but it will be amazing.
Ya. Sounds great and absolutely fits the tune,. And Robert singing along with any instument is gonna work/fit and be amazing. And that there ladies and germs, is my honest opinion!!
Led Zeppelin has been my favorite band my whole life.. 67 years old. & Pink Floyd you know I listen to now ? THE WARNING yep can't pinpoint why. The Warning just have it... ✌️🎶☮️
The acoustic intro is masterful work by Jimmy Page. It underscores the fact that Zep isn’t just heavy rock - they are incredible at the folk side of the spectrum.the musicianship in this band is elite. Their versatility is one of their greatest aspects. I would listen to it again, if I were you.
Seriously, this guy has no clue as to what he is listening to. An amazingly original folk inspired creation demonstrating the unparalleled versatility of Jimmy Page.
I completely agree with @johntuttle9544. I like this channel and most of Phil’s music reactions. I think his past hip hop and rap background polluted his understanding of classical folk music and the beautiful acoustic guitar. This sounds very much like an Anglo Celtic song. No hard feelings Phil. Keep up the good work. Enjoy this channel.
Listen to Ramble On from LZ2. One of their greatest songs with acoustic and electric guitars. A fantasy feel derived from Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings”.
The acoustic opening is actually one of Zep's most iconic progressions, and usually one of the first things aspiring guitarists try to replicate; it requires two techniques called "pull offs" and "hammer ons" to play it. After a few more repeat listenings the beauty of it will sink in. I've always loved this song because of all it's transitions, as well as its"Ramble On" magical journey vibe.
Lots of people think this song is the bomb because Robert Plant liked it better than the overplayed "Stairway..."., but what the Heck does Plant know about Zeppelin?
Jimmy Page didn't want Led Zeppelin to be a singles band because he thought it would inhibit their creativity. Singles at that time had to be no more than 3 minutes to get radio play and bands would be judged by them - only as good as their last single. Jimmy wanted more freedom and his gamble paid off. People went to concerts and bought the albums.
A lot of LZ’s music is folk-based with many historical references, and that base allied with blues is a potent mix and in my opinion, they were the best at that. Saw them 4 times in the 70`s and every show was brilliant.
Absolutely! When I first got into them in the seventies it was the heavier riffs that got me hooked but after a while I learned to appreciate their more folk influenced stuff. They're a band that have something for everyone in my opinion.
I’m 66 and been a Zeppelin fan for over 50 years. I think the greatest rock band ever. This is a brilliant song from start to finish. In fact, I think three of the best zeppelin songs ever are on this album. The other two being “the song remains the same” and the “rain song” you may have already listened to these, but if you haven’t, please do the studio versions of these two songs, and I enjoy your videos and comments down here in North Carolina USA. I luv Canada, spent four months there once on a business trip, huge RUSH fan too.
It is popular because it has everything in it for ALL ears! Great voice, a story, melody, keyboard pipes, acoustic, electric guitar, soft rock, hard Rock, great drum work, and a legendary guitar solo with a solo voice to close it out! All that combined, written perfectly from slow to fast. It has nothing negative to pick out? The whole song is written in progression also, which keeps people wanting to hear what's coming next? Long song, but everyone knows it? Coincidence? I think not? Brilliance, YES!!!!
Over the Hills is my all time favorite Zeppelin song. And I'm a massive zep head. The song has it all. It encapsulates their sounds and abilites in one beautiful composition.
Zeppelin did several songs where the count and beat were ....different and complex. 4 sticks is another example. They experimented with sound which was part of their genius.
It was early summer 1990, high school was letting out. I was walking with my best buddy out to the parking lot. We stopped by the stoner car to say hi, take a puff or two with the dudes. They had Over The Hills blaeting on the radio. I was mesmerized. I've been a die hard Led Zeppelin fan ever since.
"The Rain Song" is their most beautiful ballad, IMHO in the same league as 'Stairway" (studio version). Thanks for not being phony PHIL unlike some reactors.
I love the guitar work, that beautiful, almost whimsical, intro into an explosion of sound that gently fades out and then fades back in. It’s a helluva tune.
I appreciate honest reactions and appraisals. Never be phony with your subscribers and you'll never go wrong. That being said, I love the acoustic intro. It's part of why this song shines. Perhaps over time you'll come to like it, or at least better appreciate it overall. Some of my favorite songs and albums I didn't immediately like, and some I outright disliked. But like a good strong mold, they eventually grew on me. 😂
One of the few partially acoustic tunes I remember from the bands repertoire...I'm just going by memory, not looking up on wiki, etc. Zep always been the best blues rock bands ever. I loved the acoustic intro, a more unusual tune showing how they are versatile and experimental!
I remember a couple of times in the '90's, when I introduced LZ to a few women I knew that this was a song that they both really liked and shocked them regarding their perceptions prior to listening.
Interesting take and appreciate your honesty. For guitarists at Guitar Center that intro is one of the most identifiable and one that aspiring guitarists try to learn (like Stairway) but Page is very hard to copy. His rhythm and strumming patterns are idiosyncratic and he has gift of building tension and motion in everything he plays. He just had that magic.
You seem to be a studio oriented guy so I'm a little surprised about the beginning, but what you have to understand is that this is a device that gets used a lot, maybe it got used more back then than it does now but I still hear it in current music and I've used it myself. It's where you know what the mix is going to be like when everything finally arrives to the party. And you set everything perfectly for that, and then you do an intro where you strip all of that away and you start with one acoustic guitar and then you add another one or maybe it's a mandolin, and then you add his voice and suddenly that extra beat in that intro pattern makes sense. Robert's melodic line just fits over that perfectly and it generates this kind of anticipation for something to come - it's not settled into a groove or anything yet; it's heading towards a groove but building, and then all the sudden they bring in the rest of the band and the rest of the instruments. It hits so hard, and now the mix is exactly what they were heading for all along anyway. It's like leading your target but in an artistic way. If you haven't already, 100% check out the Pink Floyd classic Wish You Were Here. Listen to how they do the intro, it's a very extreme version of what we had going on here. Very extreme.
That was a beautiful song from beginning to the end. Jimmy's intro with Plant into the heavy with great bass line of Jones and Bonham always does his job.
I beg to differ on the intro. You have to have the slow to appreciate the fast. The soft to understand the hard. When the hammer finally drops, it hits much harder than if it opened with it. And the mellow outro bookends and echos the intro. In all things, balance. Beautiful, melodic, the structure of the gods!
Love the Zeppelin reactions, the greatest band there ever was and you got a lot of their best work still to go.. songs like Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand, Ramble On, You Shook Me, When The Levee Breaks, and No Quarter
Thanks, Ed, for leading them on their Zep journey! Another great choice. But they mentioned they haven’t yet heard Levee. That’s gotta be rectified! 😁👍✌️
Yep. I say that about a lot of Led Zeppelin songs, that the rhythm section really dominated a particular song, but this one is a premier example of that. Just mind-blowing in the execution, the mixing, and the arrangement.
It's because the intro has a weird time signature. It's not a straight 4/4. Many people get the intro wrong b/c of this and they try to play it straight. Just tap your foot and you'll see dropped and added beats. It's like what they did with Rock and Roll. When you hear that first snare it's not actually on the 1 beat of measure. People get that wrong also. Zeppelin had little idiosyncrasies like that scattered throughout their catalog.
Took me a while to play rock n roll correctly lol. Like 20 yrs of playing it my way lol. Got it right the last 10. Of all the songs I can porch sit and play, I always get the best response from my Led Zep set. I even got a acoustic Living Loving Maid thing. LOL Fun songs all.
That intro is an example of the kind of odd/unique time signatures that John Paul Jones and Jimmy Paige are famous for. You should listen to it another time or ten to really appreciate what a work of art it truly is.
It's the time signature that throws you off in the beginning. But give it a few more listens. I promise it will grow on you and will easily become one of your favorite LZ songs. Pay attention to lyrics as well. Plant really drops some nuggets of wisdom in this one 👍
According to Wikipedia The complete studio recording was released on Led Zeppelin IV in November 1971. The song originates from J.R.R. Tolkein's poem "Over the Hills and Far Away" describing the Hobbits' adventures, so your interpretation was pretty close👍. Robert Plant was a big fan of Tolkein and several of their songs refer to Lord of the Rings books. Check out Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop. Great Reaction!

Everyone has opinions and that’s fine. But Guess I’m old school and I just don’t get people not being blown away by classic Zeppelin. Is every song of there’s great? No of course not. But I can’t find any criticism of this one decades later. Nothings forced. Nothings out of time. The music structure is creative and every note and melody intricately planned out. Compared to the crap called pop music and even so much other “rock” out there today this is light years beyond anything being created. I just don’t get any criticism of songs like this one. 🤷♂️
Thanks for the reaction. Robert Plant, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson kick of their summer tour for 24. Tickets go on sale today Friday March 1st 24. Thanks for your time.
I don't know if you've seen Willie lately but he just pretty much talks through his songs now. Haven't seen Bob Dylan in many many years so I don't know how he'll do, I have seen Robert Plant with several different lineups in the last 10 years he does best with Alison krauss, he definitely still has it.
Robert is with Allison Krauss which is a must see... Ive seen Willie recently and its a good show but not great... hell, he's 90. Dyan is horrible live.
@@bradconrad936 Robert and Allison definitely do well together, and if you get to see Willie you're seeing history. Like I said earlier I haven't seen Dylan in many many years, but I can't imagine him being the Dillon from the Newport Jazz festival. But still a legend and one of my favorite artists.
This band was always incredible in live concert - saw them three times and all equally fantastic. Note this is when they were somewhat younger than the other ones you have watched and Plant's voice is higher. They are a prog rock band - the songs have a lot of changes in them, so the (it was not acoustic, just a different setting on the electric guitar) lighter intro, one of my most remembered and favorite licks
Hmm. Not sure why you think the acoustic opener was false footed. Maybe you should hear Zep's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." I'd rate it as a superior composition to "Over the Hills & Far Away," which is mainly just a fun song.
It's not surprising to me that Stairway to Heaven is popular. I think it deserves all it's accolades and fame. Nice reaction, appreciate your honest opinion to one of my favourite Zeppelin tunes. But I think this is very well mixed and the intro is a very special acoustic/folk chord progression in my opinion. This one never gets old. Brings that special majestical mystique to music that only Zeppelin can bring.
Great pick Ed.. Having grown up with Led Zep, pretty cool seeing people hearing the great songs for the first time... Favorite song by ZEP for a long time... drifting towards The Rain Song lately...

At some point the song will knock the barbells off the rack.
I really love this one. I hope you do The Battle of Evermore soon.
I mean if this song is "B side" then its on the A side of 99% of every other album...the power of Zeppelin 😎
You have to hear the 1973 version, so damn good,
Yes must to studio version of When the Levee Breaks then the Playing for Change version featuring John Paul Jones
Hmm. Not sure why you think the acoustic opener was false footed. Maybe you should hear Zep's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." I'd rate it as a superior composition to "Over the Hills & Far Away," which is mainly just a fun song.
Bombing run…great song!
I love the outro to this song, it's beautiful.
awesome song acoustics 101 awesomeness
NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MINE is Awesome!!!!
Another great song by the GOATS. Check out What is and What Should Never Be....
My favorite band of all time is Rush. But if someone pressed me to name the greatest rock band ever, I'd have to say Led Zeppelin.
You should do "What is and What Should Never Be"...and "No Quarter"....so impressive....
Dig the channel guys yall gotta check out Gallows Pole and Achilles last stand rock on
GREAT SONG, EdZeppelin! What’s next?
Listen to this under the influence
And you will feel another version
Hey we appreciate your honesty
