NICE!! I submitted a comment to the video pointing out "I" was the one that needed to be given patience by my gf. She's an amazing mtb and road cyclist. I worry that she doesn't really even know that you can ride a trail DOWN the hill! :) she's ALWAYS climbing... at any rate, I liked your comment about nudging your guy into the sport. - be patient, I suspect if he sees you love it, he'll do damn near anything to get better fast. (MAKE HIM WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR!) I had to lose a lot of skin and blood due to my significant learning curve! Wouldn't change it for the world. My girl is the highlight of everyday and I really enjoy our time in the mountains. Ok, that's enough of all that! …. since this was 7 months ago.... you might not even have the same guy for petes sake!!

Dusty Betty I did it backward. Married now but I’m slowly getting my lady into biking. Got her a fat bike as a first bike because they track really straight. Now she’s a lot better at it. I committed the sin of taking her on trails I probably shouldn’t have early on. That’s really important.

I was dating a young lady in the early 90s, and she began mountain biking to spend more time with me. 30 years later we've been married 25 years and she's still mountain biking with me. She is also standing on the podium in almost every race she does in her age group.

    Good points.
I got there from a different angle. When my son was very young, my wife wasn't a rider. A typical ride for him, when he was young was to drive to the trail head, bike in 100 yards, sit and have a snack and a couple of sips from a camelbak and then ride out and go home. The point was to be with my son, not teach him to ride.
Fast forward, my son and I are going to Moab next week on our twice per summer "4 days of punishing Dad" trip that we are on year 15 doing.
At age 58, my wife decided to try it, and now, at age 64 is passionate about it. I approached it with much the same attitude as I did with my son. I just want to go out and enjoy a nice day with my wife.
That is key I think, at least in my experience.

I must say, I watched this after I got my GF (now Fiance) to ride a mountain bike, and she loves it, so I must have gotten most of the steps right. She was really scared of falling, and got her padding to help give her more confidence, she still uses it. We ride together often now. Sometimes when I feel the need, I'll go riding with the guys, but not too often that she feels excluded, and the nice thing is, now she has made other female friends to ride with.

Well, my wife has never ridden and at 50+ is super scared of bicycles. I got her a tricycle n shes ok with that (not really), but outside of fireroads a trike just wont work...your husband is lucky. For now I ride solo n it sucks because I just want to share my love of cycling with her n bring her with me on rides! But, you're totally correct, I cant make her do it, so I settle for sending her pics of every ride I take n hope one day she wants to come.

One of the most LIFE CHANGING things for my husband and me was that we both have Garmin 235 watches now and both have them set to display our heart rate zone. I ALWAYS run higher than him when we're going the same pace. Strava's relative effort is good too, although you have to pay for it. There have been so many times we've gotten done riding and the hubby thought I was going really easy because I just couldn't keep up, when in fact I was dying. Having the numbers to prove my point has really helped us figure out how to ride together.

I wish this video was out before I got my wife (then girlfriend) on a mountain bike with me. I failed by putting her on my old mountain bike that was too big for her and took her on trails that were too tough. She didn’t love it at first. It took years, some time on a road bike, and now two kids later she loves it. I think I’m just lucky that she’s athletic and likes a challenge.

Fantastic advice! I had to learn many of these lessons the hard way when getting my girlfriend into biking.
Another tip for riding as a couple is that sometimes it's ok *not* to ride together. If they are not at the same level as you but enjoy riding, then it's ok to go to a meetup where there are different skill groups to ride with. You can also go to the same area but pick different trails to ride on and have a set place to meet. This goes along the tip of not overwhelming them with advice, as sometimes its more helpful to let them ride and session things on their own without you watching.

Just found your channel and sent it to my wife yesterday. Last year I bought a new Mountain Bike and since we are about the same height I gave her my old one to try out. Followed most of your tips, got the bike tuned and fitted to her, got her on easy trails and slowly built up over time. She loves to ride and is doing her first all girl beginner ride/race in a few months. She asked me all the time when we can go riding and now we plan trips where we can take our bikes to ride the local trails.

Encouragement. This is more important than offering tips around every corner. When you have been riding for years, you forget what the trail “looks” like to a new eye. So offering encouragement (sincere & not contrived) for those little tech accomplishments, handling, or power pedal moments for example needs to be recognized and encouraged. That instills confidence and keeps the fire burning!

I'm so glad you made this video! I've been slowly immersing my wife into the sport one ride at a time. Bike fit and trail selection were early problems but I think we're starting to hone in on the right balance. Last time we went out we also brought my friend's girlfriend along with us, and my other friend's younger daughter which helped change the dynamic of the ride in a positive way.

    Super good tips!
Another one I might suggest is learning how much you have to squeeze your brakes to skid on a flat dirt path. Even though my friends I was introducing to MTB rode bikes all the time to commute, learning how much brake was needed before they began to skid was really helpful for them to learn the boundaries of traction. Also one of my friends was deathly afraid of using the front brake, so we practiced breaking with only our front brake so she learned it's kinda hard to go OTH.

My partner and I have been road biking for a couple years now, we just went to our first real mtb trail a few days ago...only then I realized HOW INCREDIBLY COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THIS IS. He loved it so intensely, I was excited and inspired but also utterly terrified.. I'm stubborn and determined, but I was really afraid this might be something I just couldn't do as much.. I walked in to him watching this video tonight, honestly it made me feel so much better about what I'm experiencing and optimistic about learning and enjoying this new skill set. Thank you for putting this out!

Love this! Took My fiancé out on Evergreen Mountain, CO this past August and we had an absolute blast! I️t was my first time back on a MTB in a long time and her very first. She crushed it and was so proud of her...the one tip would add is 1.) CELEBRATE HER! Take her out for ice cream after, cheer her on, and let her know you are for her. We had a picnic on the top of the mountain and it sealed the deal for her..time to get her a bike!

Great video, it was nice to see considerations from a female point of view. My significant other expressed interest in it exactly once - "I'd try it on a really easy trail sometime." Haven't stopped bike shopping for her since! Even if she doesn't stick to the singletrack, the more time I can get her to spend on the bike, the better! I'd definitely sacrifice a trail day once a week to go on a ride with her even on the pavement. My poor aggressive tread though =/

Hey man, good approach! Suggest making the bike ride(s) part of a destination getaway. My gf and I take our mtb or road bikes to any place we are headed for whatever reason. Just in case there is a secret trail etc. if nothing else, you can get around a new town much faster and closer than just a drive or walk. In fact, we went to a "FlamingLips" concert in Richmond a few months ago and took the mtbs. Turns out, Richmond has a FANTASTIC trail system that neither of us ever heard of. Lots of roots, climbs, switchbacks and even some "slick rock-ish" stuff called DRYROCK out in what seemed like the middle of the river. …. so add it to any destination and you might find that the other fun stuff will let the bike part just develop naturally. - ok, I've said enough! best of luck man!

Hey Rhea.. when I first started biking with my gf, I discovered that I wasn't as into it as she was. It took me having to find a reason for myself to ride. I am going to take a jump and say that you probably found some sort of solace in biking. Pardon my assumption, but I have found most people who love the sport found it to be a place they could "go" to regroup. So, what I'm getting at is that maybe you can encourage him to ride by himself enough for him to start developing a relationship with his bike, the trail, himself (a bike has a wonderful way of helping us learn about ourselves.)

Not taking anything away from your clinics at all, just offering up another possibility (may be mentioned already, didn't feel like reading through all the comments) - Trek Dirt Series. My wife just signed up for her first and she's super excited. The camps are in some great locations (like Sedona, AZ; Fruita, CO; Whistler, BC - just to name a few). There are tons of camps throughout the season and almost all are 100% women. There are a few that are co-ed. I attended the co-ed camp in Whistler and it was one of the best experiences of my life. High level professional coaching, skill levels all the way from complete beginner to expert, and everyone is super supportive and goes out of their way to make sure you get out of the camp what you expect. You're grouped with similar skill levels so you never feel like you're holding back the group. Anyway, again, just bringing up another option.

I was digging this video until she said her channel is all about women mountain biking. If this video was geared towards men why say your channel is only for women. I like that your goal is to put emphasis on the fact that mountain biking is not gender specific but don’t cut half your viewership just because that’s a goal for the channel. Regardless this video was a great idea, you definitely have given me more confidence in asking my girlfriend.

HAHA!! This was exactly the opposite with me and my GF. She's a fricken maniac and after claiming to know to mountain bike..... she schooled the hell out of me. I began thinking that OTB was THE way to dismount! In one incident, I fell ass-over-teakettle into the rocks. I was sorta stuck in the rocks so I was kicking my leg to get out. She thought I had a brain injury! (yes I was wearing a helmet..). I just learned I couldn't stop trying. Oh! and I was also blessed to have her spare bike to ride. Top end, quality bike. Made the learning curve great!! I can completely agree with your advice here. And I'm really glad to have my GF in my life! I own the slopes, she owns the trails! nice vid.

    My story:
I'm on my second attempt to get my wife into mountain biking. The first time, I committed pretty much every sin in the book -- high expectations, didn't account for my advanced skills, wrong bike, bla bla. That outing literally ended with her stopping halfway down the first trail and screaming in tears, "I hate this!" She didn't set foot on a bike for nearly a year after that.
However, a few months back, out of the blue, she expressed an interest in biking again and this time I told myself I wouldn't make those mistakes again. We visited our LBS and got her fitted on a Trek Skye which she instantly fell in love with (compared to her previous Wal-Mart special). Better grip, better stability, smoother shifts, easier climbs, etc. This time, I decided to step back and kind of let her feel her way into it.
Three times a week, we visit our local trails and she rides the "beginner" trail (about 0.6 mi, according to Strava and aptly named "Gateway Trail") both directions. The trail is flowy with minor rooty sections. A couple of minor switchbacks. On the way in, the trail is primarily uphill, so on the way back out, it allows her to work on descending, line choice, braking, etc. I let her lead and ride at her own pace (which I really don't mind -- I'm always happy if I'm on my bike, slow or fast).
The main thing I feel us "experienced" riders forget overtime is what it's like to _not know_ anything about biking. Or more to the point, not liking it. The whole concept seems so utterly absurd to me now, but less than 4 years ago, I knew nothing about the sport and honestly had no wish to ride single track. I preferred riding paved surfaces, and I'd ride 5 miles or so a few times a week -- each ride punishing me relentlessly. Those climbs were always when it "felt like work and no play" or I genuinely questioned whether this was worth a few minutes of downhill. I got bored with pavement and started riding a fire road, which demanded more from my climbing abilities, but offered exhilarating 30 MPH descents. A few months went by and I got bored with that, so I dipped my toe into single track. It was a completely different beast (one that kicked my ass for the most part early on) because the learning curve is so much steeper. Suddenly, there's emphasis on handling, finesse, line choice, braking, weight distribution, etc. But I did what my wife is doing now --- I rode that first trail every week over and over until one day, I wanted to try new trails. It's somewhere in there that I transitioned from "mere pastime" to "full blown obsession" with mountain biking. Since then, I've learned the nuances of bike designs and how they affect the ride, I've ventured out to neighboring trail systems, and I'm now competing in my second XC season.
I share all of this because I feel like this is what we have to remember -- the newcomer is always going to be where I was 4 years ago. So I'm going to keep riding Gateway with my wife each week, and be patient. I'm confident that eventually, she'll ask me to show her a new trail. She's already showing remarkable improvement just in the last 2 weeks. Today, she rode the Gateway trail back out without having to stop at all and crushed her previous PR by a whopping 10 minutes. She's learning to power over obstacles, as well as to commit on minor drops. All without any advice from me.
Best advice I can offer anyone: Ride and ride often. Don't *_try_* to improve, just ride, ride, ride. Improvement will come naturally.

Hi there. Brand new subscriber to the channel here. Some awesome tips there. Some for can apply to new people in the sport to. A person i ride with at times treats every trail like a world series qualifier. And it can get old no matter how long you've been riding for.

My friends got me out on the trail and I was HOOKED instantly. My second ride was a huge group ride on an intermediate trail...it was challenging and slightly frustrating (being last and gasping for air, goes with one of your tips) but it just stoked the fire more, for me! That was the beginning of April this year, just did my first race yesterday (video on my channel)...so much fun. Interested in some clinics but I'm guessing you guys are back East?

That was a great video. Not just relevant for women, but for all beginners. I’m not fit or fast but I’ve loved bikes all my life. Didn’t ride for about 10 years after a back injury and life happening. When my kid learned how to ride a bike, I blew the dust off my bike to ride around with him. Very quickly I had a basement full of bikes and parts again. Ran out and got the kid a Specialized Hotrock which he has since grown out of. Built my wife a bike and we all started riding together. Wish I had seen this video sooner. I definitely took her on some inappropriate trails her first few times. Since then she developed a problem in her hip. I think it might’ve just been bike setup but she won’t ride anymore. Makes me sad. I feel like I somehow ruined the experience for her. I switched to an easier trail that we hit all the time but after a year she has very little interest. The kid and I still ride but most of the time it’s just me. Sometimes she will hike with the dogs while we ride and she’ll say something about wishing she could ride. If she ever does get back on the bike I’ll have this video to think about. Thank you!

I think one good tip is to ride behind the slower rider. As a girl who's gotten her guy into the sport, I found that riding behind him helped me spot things to help coach him on and also to be there if he stacked it. He'd never ridden a bicycle before 12 months ago and now he and I are going down fairly technical black diamond trails :)
Also, I'm guilty of number 6. Made that mistake two or three times :(

5 years latter, I'm still trying to get my wife to pedal with me off road. Not an easy task when she is afraid of things in general and not confident enough to do things. Plus hand eye coordination is not her thing. Waiting for dry season to start again, and trying to get her in shape (again) before that

Make the post ride part nice too. Eg have hot drink available and ensure that she's brought warm, dry clothes if it's cold.
When we got home girlfriend always got first shower whilst I washed the bikes (no point in both of us being cold and muddy longer than necessary!).

I leave the nag at home watching Young and Restless...while I go have a great time. Why hear a nag on the trail scaring the wildlife? HA HA No seriously, she asked me if she could come, and I was very patient. This has trickled into her everyday life and built her confidence up. Its more than fun for her. She finds it to be a good workout and stress relief.

HAHAHA. How Do I get my husband more into mountain biking? I wish I could get my husband to bike with me but he wants to surf or snowboard. Mountain biking is too much work and it is too scary for him. This is good advice for more than just mountain biking. I am trying to get my daughter more into Mountain biking. This is good advice for getting your kids into your sport.

I just watched this, even though my “girlfriend” is my wife of 27 years....hoping for some tips haha. Unfortunately, I was a little late myself to the sport , and didn’t start until I was 48 just over 3 years ago. These past couple of years I’ve really gotten into it more and more. I rode over 1300single track miles, mostly in Prescott, AZ in 2016, and this year even though I’m way behind that pace, I’ve done some awesome riding, even flew out of state a couple of times just to ride a trail I wanted to ride. I’ve asked my wife to go ride with me a few times, and she pretty much says no, with no hesitation whatsoever, lol. The bummer of it is, I’m 99% sure she’d love it within just a few rides, if she’d just give it a try. I think if I’d have found mtb when we were young, we’d be doing it together today. Your tip 10 is true, unfortunately...but it doesn’t hurt to keep asking does it? I don’t think we’re quite too old yet (52) to try something new, but the age is not working our favor either:) At least I have a couple of sons who love to mtb, and don’t mind going with the old man every once in a while!

I have been riding a few times now after my BF got into mountainbiking over 2 years ago. And today i bought a bike! I am still nervous and a real beginner though and BF did make the mistake of pushing me to do hills i did not feel ready for last run. So that will be our challenge the next few runs. Things that are very easy for him but enjoyable for me so i want to keep doing this.

We dont have official trails around here and so there aren't any official 'beginner' things. Any tips on how to decide what I can ride?

I started by myself but if was a love from 1st sight :) But then on 3rd spin I went with one of my male-friend and he showed me exactly what to do, and how to do it, and let me to repeat sections few times so I could adjust, there was no time pressure and we laugh a lot .. so, 1st- Knee pads! 2nd- Patience 3rd-good laugh :)) make her laugh even if she fell . Biking is Awesome ! good luck lads

I have to get my wife to subscribe. Or at least check out this channel. I got her a really nice mountain bike years ago before our son was born and she was willing to come with us (a group of friends I ride with) on a couple of our mountain biking trips. But when our son came along she hasn't touched the bike in about 7 years. Now our son is old enough to come along I want to reintroduce her to the sport again and introduce mountain biking to our son. Thanks for creating this channel and I this will help her get back on the bike.

Agreed. Just over the past weekend when I was out riding by myself I came across a family on the side of the trail (Mom, Dad, sister and little brother) enjoying a snack while taking a break. I had my body cam on at the time so I captured it and showed it to her. She didn't seem too impressed but my son loves my mountain biking videos so that's encouraging.

I feel I need to take this to heart when going to the trails with my kids. Except for random exceptions, I usually try to go at my pace and enjoy the trail and expect them to go at my pace too. The funnest days we've had is when they go at their pace and I just follow them. I fell down and broke a rib so it's been a few months since we've ride, but just as recent as this morning they were asking to go to the trails. I'll try to keep this constantly present in my mind.

Joe, I gotta say..... my gf loaned me her 5k+ Santacruz Tallboy on one of our first rides. She rode her Ellsworth. The second time I crashed and nicked her bike, I decided right at that moment, 1) I would buy my own bike and 2) I think she was kind of liking me. Since she didn't come back to where I lay in the rocks and bash my skull in, take her bike back and change her phone number. :)
