    I watched that whole Fluid Ride Practice Like a Pro series. They did an amazing job explaining the physics behind the techniques, and the lessons really stuck with me.

    Great stuff. One other thing that I have found myself doing that slows me down is when I become tense. If you relax the bike flows better, turns better, brakes better.

    1. Look further down the trail
    2. Actively practice cornering techniques (attack position, lean the bike)
    3. Attack brake rather than comfort brake.

      Yeah, it just kind of creeps in as a subconscious habit sometimes. I like to focus on it from time to time on my rides.

    My trick for comfort breaking is to ride a familiar trail slower than usual at a speed I know is safe and easy and see if I grab the brake put of habit, if I'm feeling extra brave I will death grip it (no fingers on brakes) to really catch myself reaching for the brakes. But you gotta really know the trail and be going at a safe speed

    I just started riding mountain bikes this summer after years as a roadie and I definitely do my share of comfort braking now that I am on dirt. And as we say in the Coast Guard time to get gritty.

      I totally get it! Just by being aware of it, you'll be able to reduce comfort breaking more and more of a time as your comfort level on a mountain bike grows.

    For more speed with less effort, pumping is a skill you see race winners use almost unconsciously.
    Pumping at the apex of a corner increases traction when you need it most, pumping in the straights is free momentum and pumping at the moment of a hard brake(as in before a corner) is lots of extra traction for massive braking power.

      That's an excellent tip. Pumping is inexpensive in terms of energy expenditure, especially when you consider how much momentum you can gain from it.

    Nice video. Comfort braking is totally a thing for me. This and cornering are my big slow downs. Leaning the bike and not braking in the turn has been game changing when I utilize those tips. I'll have to try the looking at the exit.

      Yeah, it's a big one. And anytime I practice drills I feel more on the ball with my cornering the next time I hit the trail.

    Three L's of taking a turn. LOOK. Look as far ahead as you possibly can and be prepared for things to be in your way mid corner. LOW. Get really low on your bike to keep the weight over your bottom bracket and balanced. Too much weight over the front end and your bike will wash out. Too much wright over the rear, and youll lose control by being to far from control points. Think of LOW as doing a squat right on the bike (dropper posts are a massive help!) And lastly, LEAN. Lean that bike over in the turns so that your inside arm is fully extended and your outside arm is bent. Leaning the bike over, rather than yourself, reduces the risk of the bike washing out mid corner. You want the weight on the side knobs to better grip the ground, not the center knobs and using speed and centrifigul forces to hold you up.

    I’m not sure about comfort braking. I’ll now be paying better attention to my braking. But the first 2 make a huge difference for me.
